totally misplaced sympathy

I feel no sympathy for him. I just feel that the media's constant focus on this particular crime is deflecting the public's attention from bigger crimes/issues.

Who are these so-called "REAL crooks"?

Politicians/Bureaucrats who systematically cozy up to private business and waste trillions of yen of taxpayers money on wasteful public works projects in return for promises of amakudari upon "retirement".

Right wing LDP bigots (who have come into positions of power thanks to a continuing culture of nepotism in Japanese politics) who pressure the mass media into self-censorship with the aim of having their inherit racist views take root amongst the younger generations.

Ruling party officials who have misused/wasted the pension funds of millions of hard-working people over decades and then ask the very same people to take a hit through higher taxes/lower pensions while they continue to receive ridiculously high allowances/special pensions.

Mirai, please don't misinterpret my point. Of course this guy deserves to be punished. I just find it pathetic that this particular story dominates the news, talk shows and people's conversations for so long. It's sensationalism at its finest, and the bigger stories (that actually affect us more) are being buried.

8 million yen is nothing. This guy has paid the price many times over. He'll never get a another job.

How about focusing on the REAL crooks who are still in positions of higher power.

The way in wich this story was buried by the major Japanese media outlets yesterday is truly frightening. Either this is a prime example of self-censorship or the government is directly involved.

This is not a bad result for Japan. Even the major football powers in the world have hiccups just after the club season finishes. Players are in vacation mode and often not fit. Many of them are also wrapped up in contract negotiations. Albania beat France yesterday and Wales beat Belgium the day before.

@Bogi: you also see European people, before a judo match, bowing. Nothing weird...

Not a good comparison. Contestants have to bow before and after matches in judo. It's part of the rules.

The important thing is being respectful to other people customs, even though you don't share them.

I agree. But something that I find very strange is the habit that Japanese soccer players have developed of hugging each other as if they were Southern Europeans or South Americans. I know it's not a bad thing, but it just seems really, really weird. I think it's good to be accepting of other customs when in a situation like the photo above, but J footballers hugging the hell out of other J footballers just seems so fake.

Do you actually believe that ANYBODY could become a Prince's bodyguard?

I would be seriously concerned if I were to see you trying to have a go at my Sensei; he's only about 5'1" and looks just like a frail, old English trump (no joke).

I'm just saying, there are plenty of really big, scary looking martial arts experts. Give me one of those.

The old rich pensioners should be means tested before receiving the pension, if they are creaming it off the stock market, have a second home down in Izu, travel to Hawaii and drive a benz then do they really need the pension from the govt ?

If people haven't saved for their old age, that is their look out, why should my working family support people who have been irresponsible? If I had been financially irresponsible I would not expect a single yen from the government.

Do you understand how the pension system in Japan works? These people have all paid into the system. Don't you agree that they are entitled to at least what they contributed?? Perhaps you also propose that banks offer minus interest for people with mid-high incomes! If not, I do not understand your point at all.

Never take your eyes off your children in unfamiliar territory. Very few Japanese children have experience with swimming in the sea. Some may call this an accident, but I call it negligence.

Many of the comments here suggesting that she was forced into this marriage/lifestyle are somewhat confusing. The expectations and sacrifices that one makes when marrying into the Japanese Imperial family are both clear and well-known. It is natural that that the Prince would be interested in a classy woman like her, but the decision to accept the proposal was made by Masako herself.

They ruined a good woman.

Who did? I have immense sympathy for her given the heartache she has suffered, but let's remember she was a 30 year-old adult when she made her decision.

Large amounts of non-burnable waste are weighed in Japan. Very standard.

Posted in: What’s wrong with English education in Japan? Pull up a chair See in context

@Cleo

Why would any kid spend their time studying something that they are not tested on?

Because it's fun/interesting? When I was a kid I spent lots of time learning stuff that I wasn't only not going to be tested on, but that wasn't even in the school curriculum - because I found it interesting. Lookit all the kids today who will happily spend hours reading a comic book or playing a video game just to get to the end; that's not stuff they're going to be tested on. They do it because it appeals to them.

Gee Cleo, don't you think that's just a tad idealistic? I was a kid once too, and I memorized lots of fun stuff as did all the other kids. And when we were at school, we learned/memorized multiplication tables, periodic tables, historic facts etc because we needed it to pass tests and get grades, NOT because we thought it would benefit us 20 years later.

Make English (or maths, or history, or chemistry, or literature) as exciting to a kid as a Monopoly board or a video game, and kids will study without being nagged or tested.

Ah, the old "Japanese kids can't learn English because it's not fun" argument. Do we really need a world full of teenagers who don't take things serious unless they're "fun"? I'm all for kids enjoying school/learning, but no matter how "exciting" you make your English class, 99% of the 15-year olds would still rather be doing something else. The biggest motivation to study for teenagers all of the world is still the short-term goal i.e. passing tests (or the consequences of failing). That is why speaking should be included in tests.

Change the tests (i.e. include speaking) and all will be solved.
