Japan has some of the best food, and one of the best food cultures, in the world. It also has some of the worst sandwiches in the world.

The best comment I've seen on Japanese news sites about this issue is basically: everyone in Tokyo complaining about this, where were you when the people who live around Futenma were complaining about the same thing, for so long? Anyone who, in the back of their minds, was saying, "oh just deal with it, that's all you people ever say," have no right to expect anyone to care about their Haneda problem.

Amazing! I work in one of those buildings, he got the courtyard of it right and everything!

Went here and saw this exhibit last weekend. People with motion sickness, beware: the walls and floor in this part of the aquarium are covered in full, constantly moving projection mapping like this. I had to get out of there fast! Nice aquarium otherwise, though.

Posted in: Labor minister opposes banning female dress codes with high heels See in context

This might not get seen due to all the comments, and I don't have time to make sure it hasn't been mentioned already, but...

Maybe the biggest thing to point out here is, in this country, where there is always a reasonable chance that you will have to evacuate because of a natural disaster, forcing women to wear shoes that CLEARLY make evacuation much more difficult and dangerous goes beyond image-based sexism. It's cruel. I work in a large office building in Tokyo. If we had to evacuate because of a fire or whatnot, the women in my office would have no choice but to throw their heels away, exposing their feet to all kinds of extra dangers, if they had any hope of quickly evacuating. These comments are appalling.

Posted in: Hundreds of police search for escaped thief See in context

Goodlucktoyou, read the article again. Police are visiting all houses, but searching only vacant or abandoned houses, of which there are many. I have a relative who lives on this island. Her car gets thoroughly searched at checkpoints, including the trunk, everywhere she goes. But the police have not been inside her home.

Posted in: Man's body found in refrigerator in garden of abandoned house in Ibaraki See in context

This isn't the whole story. The TV news was reporting that there were signs that this man was living inside the fridge. It's still bizarre, but perhaps it was a homeless person who wanted some shelter in a place no one would think to look?
