Nigelboy: Okay, but the police still didn't have proof of the death threat.

The police didn't have any evidence of the death threats, which is why they asked the girl to bring the emails. They can't be expected to act upon every incident when there is nothing to support a claim.

I wish the outcome was different, but sometimes any action taken is not enough...especially in hindsight.

The driver shouldn't have been backing up if he couldn't see behind, someone should've been guiding him. He should share the blame with the parent(s).

Tmarie: I think all killers, regardless of age, are a little 'off' when they kill. But let's not automatically use mental illness as a defense for these instances...

Same old story from the JT posters...jump on the police. If the police acted upon 99% of all threats and couldn't get to this, they're incapable of doing they're jobs. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Basroil: Being that he's reportedly confessed, most folks would tend to think the victim's statements are true. Or is this another case where we shouldn't trust the cops because it involves a service member?

"but hey in the west they have made children afraid of adults": what a silly and irrelevant comment. See justasking's answer to you question, it's spot on.

Yuri: The patrols are really nothing new. Even before the curfew, I would see them around the Gate 2 and Kitamae area. I sometimes saw them in Naha too, 25 yrs ago. You say that locals fear the patrols, but that's not true...they could care less. It might interrupt the drinking for a second, that's it. The business owners know the patrols are there to "keep the peace" and usually accommodate. You really need to give your Okinawan brethren more credit...not many consider the military (or the patrols) a burden.

I can understand wanting an establishment to honor the curfew, but how are they to know that the customer is active duty? Most places do not have English speakers and likely cannot recognize an active duty ID from a retired or civilian ID (unless I'm mistaken, the curfew does not apply). Even if a service member was drinking off base...and he/she says they are not military, what do you expect the employee/owner to do?

kimu: He will be taken to a US military hospital/clinic for treatment regardless of where he lives (and yes, he did live off base).
