I am sure it will be summer, probably July, August until the public can be vaccinated.

Do you mean July or August 2022? Vaccinating everyone by this summer would mean about 700,000 people a day, every day, for 6 months straight would need to be getting jabbed... and that’s just one shot. We’d need two shots to be completely protected.

And this is why the world is in a mess....

You're totally right. The world is in a mess because there is too much empathy and compass in it. I forgot that the standard reply to someone disturbing the ‘wa’ is ridicule, condemnation and veiled threats. To make the world a better place we need more judgement and less understanding! /s

Have a little compassion people. This test taker was in his 40s and after being kicked out locked himself in a bathroom until the police came to get him out. This is very likely someone with a disability doing something outside of his comfort zone. I hope he can get another chance to take the test if it’s something he really wants to do.

except the global coronavirus pandemic hasn't been around for 13 months; just nine. Four months must be for another reason. The start of schools? American football season?

the extra four months coincide exactly with Abe’s tax sales tax increase, which sent the economy into recession before the pandemic.

Posted in: Q&A: Japan's coronavirus-related travel restrictions See in context

I guess it’s a step in the right direction. However, by Japan’s own testing standards, it would be impossible to receive negative test results 72 hrs prior to travel. It seems that this is an intentional way to restrict those who wish to return.

I hope he’s ok. Abe has his faults but making jokes about someone’s poor health is in very bad taste.

The weekly trend is psychological warfare. The numbers peak every week on Friday and Saturday, making everyone super cautious on the weekend. Then on Sunday, when everyone is thinking about what to do the following week, the number is halved, letting everyone on Monday morning feel a little better about getting onto a packed train for their commute to work.

... you would be wrong. The mortality is clearly much lower than 1%.

The official numbers have it at 33,113 infected and 1001 deaths which is exactly 3%.

7 foreigners positive on arrival June 15:

It's very convenient for your argument that you left out the fact that 5 Japanese citizens arriving from abroad on the same day also tested positive for covid.

*Permanent Residents and "long-term residents"** who left Japan almost three months ago from ANYWHERE can already return to Japan, and many do so every day. *

(fixed it for you)

So your argument is that this situation is fine since permanent residents who left almost three months ago are allowed to return? That must be such a small amount of people that they don’t even register statistically.

Posted in: As Japan reopens, coronavirus testing slowed by bureaucracy and staff shortages See in context

I have to agree with Virusrex on the need for an analysis of cause of death over the past few months. Everyone keeps pointing to it as evidence that covid hasn’t been spreading here and that isn’t necessarily the case. If there were 10,000 less deaths from accidents because of people staying home but 8000 more deaths due to pneumonia, the total number of deaths would decrease by 2000. It hardly supports the theory that many people are touting. Without an analysis looking at total deaths during a certain period is meaningless.

I’m really interested to know what financial burdens families would incur by my the start date. You either pay now or pay later but the total cost of education isn’t going to change by shifting dates a few months.

The vast majority of elementary school aged children in Japan are already two months behind in a school term that only last about four months. The next two months are only going to be lessons about social distancing and washing hands properly. There’s no way to make up that time in the summer (kids need time off anyway).

I think spending the next couple of months preparing for the September start would be much better spent than trying to salvage a spring term that is already lost.

The best program to encourage domestic travel in Japan that I can remember was when the DPJ were in power and they reduced highway tolls to ¥1000 flat rate and reduced the tax on gasoline. My family travelled all over Japan during that time and visited places we’d have never seen otherwise.

So the plan is to spend $13b to prop up a $44b industry. Is that money well spent? Tourism accounts for less than 8% of GDP. I think there are probably better places to spend this kind of money.

Nope, mask prices have been down for a couple of weeks now. They'll probably be at their original prices soon.

Not where I live. They aren’t even close to precovid prices. Sharp is selling boxes of 50 online for 2,980¥ plus 600¥ shipping.

I’m fine with stopping resellers but price gouging needs to be stopped too. 50 masks used to cost between 700-1000¥. Now they are going for 3000-4000¥.

If you’re argument is that students who have scholarships or financial support from someone don’t deserve government support that’s not an unreasonable position to take. If your argument is that someone doesn’t deserve support because they aren’t Japanese you are supporting discrimination. It’s pretty simple.

How many on JT have received the 10 man yen payment or even the stupid Abe masks?

The only thing I’ve received from the government recently are property and car tax bills for just under ¥300,000.

Those who are found positive will be secluded for more than two weeks and their families and the person himself of herself will be discriminated in their offices.

I think maybe you don’t understand the nature of an antibody test. It’s used to show that you’ve had the disease and recovered from it. Antibody tests will not show that someone is infected with the disease at the time of the test.

If you have mild or no symptoms, do you really want to be in a place like that? I guess nobody trusts anyone to self-isolate, wear a mask, keep social distance..

I’m pretty sure nobody is calling an ambulance to take them to emergency care if they have mild or no symptoms.

It's a pretty dire situation when thousands of people are being turned away from hospitals daily and aren’t even able to get the seen by doctors, let alone tested for the disease.
