Well, they do still have a commonwealth that gives them total control over the democratically elected governments of many countries including Canada, Australia, NZ to name a few.

The UK has "total control" over Australia, Canada and NZ?

I'm sure that comes as a shock to the citizens there. Australia has been independent for 121 years and I'd imagine Canada longer.

The Commonwealth of Nations is an organisation nations voluntarily join. It has no "control" over them.

Let’s not forget the whole “Beautiful Country” thing or that he essentially smothered a rape investigation of one of his compromise either.

I also remember the "we will make Japan a place where women shine" hilarity.

A nice, rare junket for halfwit Tony Abbott, and the angry geriatric, little Johnny Howard.

Surely the current PM attending would be sufficient.

Even if one disagreed with his politics, it is a truly sad and horrible day for Japan. No one deserves to die like that. Friday, July 8, 2022 will be an infamous and tragic day in this nation's history.

Rest in Peace, Abe Shinzo.

Australia part of Asia,

Try saying that to a guy of European descent, you'll get a bloody nose

As a white Aussie I respectfully disagree. I certainly know of no Aussie of a European background who would violently disagree.

Australia may be a separate continent, but we are now part of Asia - and getting closer all the time. Minister Wong is spot on.

$7 for a lunch buffet is cheap, cheap, cheap

The buffet went up by ₩9000 ($7), which was a 10% rise. Very pricey lunch buffet.

Petrol is A$2.15/L (JP ¥202/l, US$1.48/l) here at my local in Australia for the cheapest 91-octane. And this is with 20 cents/L excise tax temporarily suspended by the government!

Good incentive to drive less if you are able to do so.

Posted in: Japan to resume accepting guided foreign tour groups from June 10 See in context

is there a foreign wannabe tourist on the planet earth with zero Japanese language skills , and zero connections here in Japan that would or could tour Japan on anything but a guided tour? People need to stop whining about Japan slowly returning to what is normal for most foreign tourism…. Do y’all really think the average tourist could navigate the airports, the subways, trains …. Even a taxi ? All this whining is about the whiners and not the reality of the situation.

Laughable.

Most people do NOT need their hands held when visiting Japan. I've had countless friends and family visit with zero Japanese and had almost no problems making their way around. They certainly did not need a tour guide as you suggest.

Good riddance, Scummo. His constant ad man speak was eventually despised by the electorate. He has taken down a good portion of the party with him, and the few sensible, moderate voices that were there.

Good luck Albo. Risen to the top job from housing estate beginnings with a single Mum. First non Ango-Celtic name for an Aussie PM. Tough gig ahead with a mountain of foreign debt and all sorts of issues left by Scummos government.

Minus 40C° running out of power in northern Canada, Alaska or Siberian. Is a death sentence.

Same for doing the same in the deserts of The middle East, North Africa even Mongolia.

Grasping at straws, lol.

99.9% + of car users will never drive in those extreme areas. Fact.

Running out of gas and water in those extreme areas is also a death sentence.

EVs are not yet perfect, but are the future. You will not be buying any new combustion engine cars from many makers after 2025-2030. Hard to accept for some, but they need to deal with it.

Expected result. Well done on making Qatar, Samurai Blue! The Socceroos with three debutantes and poor form were sadly not at the level of this very experienced, quality Japan team.

Moriyasu is a top manager. The way he has this team set up, they could - with some luck - go far into the knockout stages in Qatar. Playing the tournament in familiar conditions will help them too. Good luck in Qatar, Japan - they are probably many Aussie's team to follow now!

Italy missing the Cup...now theres a shock!

Authorities seized 13 long guns, handguns, sets of body armor, a machete, a large quantity of ammunition and high-capacity magazines.

Good police work in finding these weapons and arresting those who took them to the protest. Truly scary to think what may have happened.

Well done to the vast majority of Canadians in getting vaxxed and doing the best they can to protect their communities. For me, the last paragraph says it all:

Pandemic restrictions have been far stricter in Canada than in the U.S., but Canadians have largely supported them. The vast majority of Canadians are vaccinated, and the COVID-19 death rate is one-third that of the United States.

Posted in: Most of Japan's embassy staff in Ukraine to leave as tensions grow See in context

But they've seen the trap that awaits them in Biden continuing to spin out the game until HIS needs are met (whether that need is the 'strong hero' reputation when the paper tiger doesn't move, the veneer of legitimacy to the plans to steal assets from Russians to prop up his government, or forcing Russia to do something that he can then declare to be them starting a war, which would also prop up his government) namely that it creates the conditions for even those who lost the last national Ukrainian election and aren't bothered by it being overthrown, but aren't that invested in the present regime due to its corruption to decide that the regime has to go, even if it results in the resumption of national elections they won't win.

Don't take this the wrong way, but the occasional full-stop might add a little coherence to any points you (may) be making here.
