Posted in: Staff at Haneda airport perform first tsunami drill See in context

I agree. Haneda's JAL terminal is at least five stories high the last time I passed through. That should be taller than any hangar. Not sure the ANA buildings. Unless they are gathering on the roof of the hangar that structure won't protect much. But there are only two public staircases in the JAL building visible to the public. There may be more hidden around corners. This is what they should be practicing for. How to marshall thousands up unseen staircases. Why they choose a hangar at sea level escapes me. How long did it take them to walk there? Or did they all take the bus? But like the artical says it was only to test the leadership skills of staff. Not testing the laws of science.

I agree with gonemad. Why is this story released now. The title is meant to scare. Even last March this would not be enough to worry about. Perhaps California should start looking at their local reactors. Now if you are talking about Ceasium that could be something important.

Posted in: Electric cars risk losing green sheen in Japan See in context

Even if all power plants are running on fuel oil or LNG the electric plug in car can still be a benefit. The car is usually being charged at night when the utility is "off peak". That and the utility can burn fossil fuel much more efficiently than individual cars on the road.

As for those touting hydrogen. Time to go back to the science textbooks. The manufacture of hydrogen gas/liquid is oil dependent. Only seawater electrolysis by way of solar is economical but incredibly time consuming. Then you still need more energy to pound the gas into liquid.

Hydrogen is never found on earth in its pure form. It has to be derived from other compounds and that takes .... energy.

Hydrogen for mobility only is practical in Hollywood.

Posted in: Softbank gets approval for 900MHz band specific base station plan See in context

Softbank's "clear commitment" does not seem to apply to the countryside of Tohoku. Towers (base stations?) are still few and far between up here. One tower for each larger locale and if you happen to live behind a tree, forget about connecting.

Posted in: Radioactive cesium detected in condo in city in Fukushima See in context

And this is how it works. If nobody takes the time to look for it then we can expect it to show up everywhere/anywhere. I realize this happened in the early days. Hopefully more people, more industries are wiser now. Just because you can't smell it, can't feel it and can't see it does not mean it is not there. Now we know disposal of much of the tsunami debri will be a touchy process. Especially if there is not public and or private oversight.

Umm... A hand held controller. Does that include a "dead man switch" in case it is dropped? Or do you wait for the batteries to conk out after 3-5 km before you stop?

My 2004 Elgrand has that number 3 item. I can say it works very well. Also the VDC and adaptive cruise control are much to my liking.

I saw some previews a few days ago. Impressive. I will tune in for the show.

Ibaraki is "northeast"?? That's a bit of a geographical stretch. Aomori, Iwate or Miyagi are northeast.

Posted in: Coca-Cola to start introducing vending machines with LED lighting See in context

Should not have to wait to make a whole new machine. There are many products already available that can replace the fluorescent lamp directly with LED. One for the home is available in my local hardware store that uses the fixture's circuitry to light a tube of LEDs with no modification needed. Shouldn't be that difficult to make them in varying lengths for the vending industry.

A discarded gum wrapper probably has more information than this article. What the heck is being reported here? At least it is compatible and only costs $2.99

Posted in: Radioactive cesium found in compost in Akita See in context

I wonder what these compost piles were registering on March 10, 2011. We could be seeing something now that was not there before simply because it was not being measured. How do we know that radiation leaks weren't spewing forth long before March 11 and not being reported or detected. The mindset seems to be if we don't measure it it must not be present so all is well. Or so says TEPCO and the Govt.
