Why is the word “Black” capitalized? I’ve noticed this a lot recently in American media, often in articles where the word “white” is not capitalized. The BBC still uses “black” with a lower-case “b”. It’s very strange to capitalize a colour.

I remember Louis Gossett Jr in the Iron Eagle movies when I was a kid. I thought he was so cool. May he rest in peace.

Dismissed over ¥490 worth of coffee? I feel bad for the guy. Sure, it’s dishonest. But the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. There are other teachers and principals doing much worse and receiving little to no punishment. And the politicians who run the country steal millions and get away with it. Not fair!

Spidey Today  08:30 pm JST

Japan is one of the most developed countries in the world, however it has some of the coldest houses. No centralized heating, low or no insulation.

You’re absolutely right about that. Homes here are freezing in winter, and very hot in summer. Why aren’t they insulated?

I remember watching him play for the Hamfighters

They’re called the “Fighters”. The company that owns them is called Nippon Ham. Calling them the “Hamfighters” is like calling the Kansas City Royals the “City Royals” or the Tampa Bay Rays the “Bay Rays”.

As a lifelong Blue Jays fan who started to believe the rumours and thought we might actually have a legitimate shot at signing Ohtani, I am gutted.

I hope Ohtani does well, but that the Dodgers continue to underachieve in the postseason.

Posted in: Is buying a house in Japan a good financial investment? See in context

Aly Rustom Oct. 2  08:18 am JST

Not a good financial investment- but a necessity when you have a wife and 2 kids.

I also have a wife and two kids and completely agree.

A lot of people will argue that houses in Japan depreciate in value. But if you could choose between paying a mortgage for X years or paying rent on an apartment, which is better? At least after paying off your mortgage, you’ll own something at the end, unlike renting.

If they really want to punish Johnny’s, give all the publishing rights of past recordings to the artists and let them cash in on royalties instead of the agency. Then let Johnny’s change their name and see if any new artists sign with them. Hopefully that’ll put the nail in the coffin.

Every single one of his stats is well above the MVP year with the exception of WAR and that could change (Is that cumulative? I honestly do not know.)

It is cumulative, so that should go up significantly by the end of the season.

Here’s another question: Who’s the last player to win MVP in a season during which they played for two different teams? And if Ohtani gets traded to an NL team, could he win the MVP for both leagues??

But Sakaguchi (established) that it could not be said Matsubara was aware of the risk to the young child's life.

This cretin was surely aware of the risk of leaving a little boy in 75C water.

There’s no justice for murdered children in this country.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, is outraged here.

Its all performative. A quick little self administration of endorphins in the morning showing everyone how caring one is. How empathetic....

How virtuous...

Fuji TV has had this on their schedule for weeks. Its a funny little coincidence. Thats it.

Nobody is outraged in the least.

This post pretty much sums it up!

If it comes down to a US-Japan final, I'm not sure who I'll be rooting for.

I hope we get that final. That US line-up is unreal - Betts, Trout, Alonso, Goldschmidt… it’s scary. But Japan has the pitching advantage with Ohtani, Roki Sasaki, even Yu Darvish if needed out of the pen.

I’ve been to Jingu many times to see the Carp. It’s a historic and atmospheric stadium. But it’s in need of extensive renovations. One time I splurged on seats along the third base line near the Carp dugout. Instead of facing home plate, the seats faced the centrefield scoreboard. In order to see home plate, you need to turn your head at a 90 degree angle. And the seating area is flat, so you can only really see the back of the head of the person in front of you.

@Yubaru

Would it matter any less that up until a couple of years ago the Swallows were far from a "top-flight" team. They typically were a basement dweller!

The term “top-flight” refers to their NPB membership. It’s a term used to differentiate teams playing in a top-tier league from those in the minor leagues.

Regardless of your political beliefs, moral compasses, let him Rest In Peace.

No human is perfect, and that includes youuuuu,

and all the protesters.

Show respect for the deceased…

The protests and comments on here have nothing to do with the fact that he was a useless leader. They’re to do with the planned state funeral, funded by us taxpayers who don’t give a toss about him. He didn’t deserve to die the way he did, but he also doesn’t deserve a state funeral. Let his wealthy family, and the LDP, pay for it.

Japan's longest-serving, but divisive, premier

The only reason he’s the longest-serving prime minister is the fact that he refused to resign like so many other post war PMs did. He only stepped down because of his own health problems, not because of the string of scandals he was involved in.

He was power-hungry, ineffective, and corrupt.

That’s a surprisingly long sentence. We regularly see stories of parents (or boyfriends of single mothers) abusing, neglecting, and murdering children, and they only get a few years of prison time.

Did this guy have a criminal record that added to his sentence?

The Angels are, in my opinion, the most disappointing Major League franchise of the past 10+ years. Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani are wasting their careers there. Trout has played in one - ONE! - postseason series in his career. It was so disappointing when he signed that extension a few years back. He could’ve received as much, or more, from another team and maybe played in some meaningful games.

I have two kids in daycare and I work with children. There’s no chance a two year old is going to wear a mask. The kids I work with are pretty good about keeping their masks on from around age four. But we don’t require anyone younger that that to wear one because it’s pointless to try.

This government panel sounds pretty out of touch with young children.
