Posted in: Japan Airlines pilots 'unaware of fire' at first See in context

On the news here in Japan this morning is uncut passenger footage showing 8 minutes from impact to exit of the aircraft. As mentioned above, 18 minutes, if accurate, referred to the last person off, the captain, who only exited after carefully checking the cabin for any remaining passengers.

Here is a Japanese article from Nikkei that properly explains that the "90 Second Rule" applies to the time from deployment of the emergency exits to the evacuation of the passengers and obviously not the time from an accident to complete disembarkment. This was accomplished.

https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOUE030KJ0T00C24A1000000/

As for the time from the accident to the opening and deployment of the emergency exits, the crew did a remarkable job considering they were dealing with a non-functional announcement system and had to determine which exits were safe to open due to the fire. As the article mentions, five of eight emergency exits were determined to be unsafe due to the fire.

This was a remarkable job done by JAL in an accident that could have had a far, far greater loss of life.

This article says it better than I ever could.

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/01/02/travel/tokyo-plane-crash-safety-rules-analysis-intl/index.html

The experts mentioned that much of the success here may have had a cultural connection. No one pushed others out of the way. There was no mad rush to grab baggage from overhead compartments. The crew was spectacular as were the orderly passengers.

Bravo, JAL.

Posted in: Australian man jailed for violating quarantine See in context

What we should do is increase awareness of proper sanitation and hygiene

practices, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles to keep the immune

system strong, and self isolation for those are sick.

Covid-19 is many times deadlier than season flu. Vaccines and effective antiviral medications already exist for influenza.

Self-isolation of only those who are sick is fairly useless for a virus like Covid-19 which can be transmitted by asymptomatic carriers.

The entire reason there are so few deaths to date in Australia is due to their strong quarantine regulations. (all due respect to your lost "freedoms")

I only wish it were possible for Japan to adopt the same sort of strong regulations because there is no reducing the number of infections to the point of not overflowing the healthcare system without a full lockdown in which everyone participates.

Kudos to the Australian authorities.

Trump settled for burgers, which is realistic, Obama had to obtain freebies like 5 star course sushi tallying ¥35,000

Trump doesn't settle for burgers. It's the only thing he eats. Among his long list of deficiencies, he's a culinary xenophobe.

just another 3D. Democrat Disappointment Day.

Well, only in so much as the inevitable Barr redactions and the extra hassle and time required to get the full report, which the congress will. Make no mistake.

Anyway, it beats the ol' MAGA 3D: denial, denial denial.

Now Dems are crying that they won’t get the report until after the press conference.

so no time to leak and set up their liberal media buddies with talking points.

If the report is damaging to Trump what is the big advantage for Democrats in getting it before this BS press event? It's not like 24 hours later is going to make it any less damaging.

Now, the president's hand-picked attorney spinning the report and taking questions before the report is even released on the other hand seems like a fairly obvious attempt to control the narrative.

Posted in: New Zealanders give up guns after massacre, drawing some online criticism apparently from U.S. See in context

In Japan, when the police find someone with an illegal gun, they arrest them.

I call that protecting me.

Nevermind arrests, in Japan with its strict gun control laws you're less likely to be shot with an illegal gun than to win the lottery.

I call that protecting you.

In the USA there are 67 million more guns than people.

The USA has 4% of the world's population and yet, thanks to its gun culture, 46% of the entire global total of civilian firearms.

Please, by all means tell me it's a total coincidence that the USA also tops the global charts in mass shootings and overall gun violence. 64% of US homicides in 2016 were gun-related. Compare that to, say the 4.5% in the UK and Wales over two years from 2015-2016.

I applaud New Zealanders for their speedy and sensible response to this massacre!

It's been 2,285 days since the Sandy Hook shooting. Shame on the gun culture in the USA and the NRA machine that fuels it.

Japan Today once again displaying hit pieces on Trump. All quotes in the article are from left wing Trump haters.

Which article did you read?

The first three quotes in this one, and the reason for the entire article itself are Trump's.

The fourth is the Christchurch shooter's.

It's over halfway through the article before he finally gets to a single quote from Senator Blumenthal.

That's followed by some quotes from the White House defending Trump.

The Democratic Party's "star witness" against Trump is a convicted fraudster and perjurer.

Who committed crime, fraud and perjury at the behest and on behalf of the current President of the United States.

That's some defense you got there.

Quite possible. That’s why you don’t do things like that on the same day the President is negotiating something important overseas.

Sure thing, pal. We'll try to work his impeachment proceedings around his travel schedule too. Definitely want to make sure he's in town for those.

No POTUS should be out of town when his longtime fixer testifies about his long years of criminal activity.

Posted in: Trump calls discussions about removing him 'treasonous' See in context

"To which the president replied, 'I don't care. I believe Putin.'"

The 25th Amendment provides that a president can be removed if the vice president and a majority of the cabinet determines he or she is “unable to discharge the powers and duties” of the office.

I'm fairly sure "the office" doesn't refer to the Kremlin here.

There is nothing about a requirement of "being shot like Reagan" in the amendment. I'm pretty sure being a malignant narcissist who may have conspired with foreign agents to win an election and definitely takes their word over that of his own intelligence agencies, openly attacking people he nominated himself is an open and shut case of "unable to discharge the powers and duties".

Yup, and treason is a crime. Time to start arresting people.

They already have! Roger Stone was the 37th indictment and he won't be the last.

You gotta love Trump crying about treason. It doesn't get better than that.

I'd say it's fairly reasonable to expect that tossing a bicycle from the 12th floor of a building might result in seriously injuring or killing someone just as getting behind the wheel of a vehicle drunk would and thus there is the charge of vehicular homicide.

I hope he gets the maximum sentence possible. What an irresponsible moron.

There's that combined with the sick gun culture promoted by the NRA and the total perversion of the true intention of the Second Amendment.

No it’s directly from the official transcript from ABC news. I bolded the portion that makes my point.

Exactly. You took words out of context in an attempt to change the meaning to something that you like better.

Posted in: Fired FBI director Comey tells ABC Trump 'morally unfit' for office See in context

Hey, thats what Comey said, read the full transcript. Of course they would never air that part on television.

Way to try and spin his comments. He was clearly not saying Mueller should be fired as you're trying to insinuate with your ridiculous bold text.

He was only saying that Mueller knows exactly where this Trump thing is going to end, as does everyone else who isn't living in denial. What he is saying is that any attorney or investigator who can't see this should be fired.

comey also said hi to Mueller:

According to James Comey, if you’re investigating for a year and you don’t know what’s going on, “you should be fired.”

I think you were watching the imaginary interview in your head.

The actual comments James Comey made were:

"I'm not going to talk about my contact with the special counsel."

-and-

"...I also want to make sure that I-- don't-- I don't do anything that might get in the way of their ability to be effective."

They will no doubt Squeeze and threaten him, but once again, libs are getting waaaaaaay ahead of themselves.

The fact that he is ONLY being charged with the one count of lying to the FBI and not for the serious additional crimes outlined in his statement of offense, coupled with Flynn's open admission that he is fully cooperating with Robert Mueller's investigation is fairly clear evidence that we are long past the "squeezing" phase.

But please, don't let these facts get in the way of your delusions.

Posted in: Flynn pleads guilty to lying about contacts with Russia See in context

“Flynn would not be permitted to enter a plea bargain unless he had substantial credible evidence of criminal activity involving high-level members of the Trump campaign, including potentially the president himself,” Notre Dame Law School professor Jimmy Gurulé said. “Clearly this is not good news for President Trump.”

Also, Flynn’s admissions that he acted on behalf of the Trump transition team to interfere with U.S. foreign policy raises the potential of charges under the Logan Act, a never-used 1799 statute than bans citizens from interfering in foreign relations, as well as potential other criminal statutes.

The bad news for Donald J. Trump and company is that Michael Flynn is not the "big fish" Robert Mueller is targeting. He is a "medium fish" at best.
