Posted in: Abe asks citizens to be more diligent on social distancing See in context

Here's an idea! Why don't lawmakers create a new set of laws so that the state of emergency can be enforced. Hell, while you're at it, why not have widespread testing and procure the supplies necessary to treat the hundreds of thousands of people who will inevitably come down with Covid-19 due to the terrible handling of the crisis so far!

Posted in: Bed vacancy rate for virus patients in urban areas below 20%: survey See in context

I am no alarmist, but if the "vacancy rate" is only 20% now, near the beginning of the pandemic and with totally insufficient measures in place, Tokyo and the rest of Japan is in for a VERY bumpy ride ahead.

Now, we will see if they were holding back on testing because of the summer games or not. I expect to see a bump in the reported cases of the virus.

My thinking exactly. It will also be interesting to see if Abe now starts to show some real leadership by enforcing social distancing measures like the other countries that really want to get ahead of the virus. Any other (non)-actions are simply courting disaster.

He is. Great at eating. ;-)

Something smells fishy. If a person has several hundreds of millions of yen worth of jewelry, s/he can definitely afford a safety deposit box, or better yet, a security guard outside their door for 1,500 yen per hour when they're not home.

Yeah ... "be more like the U.S. "

Highest murder rate of any industrialized country.

Highest rate of incarceration in the world.

Highest rate of obesity among industrialized nations.

Cruelest refugee detention policies in the free world.

Led by a greedy, dishonest, child-like, malignant narcissist.

Yeah ... "be more like the U.S. "

Umm ... am I missing something here? People seem to be reacting like this is something new. TEPCO and the J-gov have been dumping contaminated water into the ocean for years, just not perhaps this much all at once. Why are people reacting like this is the first time?

Wish the authorities could fine Trump for inflating crowd figures as well. If it hit him in the pocketbook, he might stop lying about them. :-)

They were just beginning their exciting rivalry and would've been great for the sport had the media not hounded Asa so much and forced him out. These past 10 years could've been another golden age for sumo.

I was fortunate enough to watch Hakuho and Asashoryu (my favorite wrestler) battle it out a couple of times. Great rivalry and amazing bouts to watch. I was a 15-year fan of the sport, but after Asashoryu was forced out, I totally lost interest and haven't been to a live basho since.

Everything about this story rings true, except for one thing. One of the women was 21, which seems much too old for him.

Posted in: More Japanese marrying friends and acquaintances because they don’t want to bother with dating See in context

Crazily enough, about 60% of Japanese women and 76% of Japanese men in their 20s report having no romantic partner

Given a fairly even distribution between the genders, either the statistics are off, the poll question was interpreted way differently between the men and women, or there are a lot more Japanese playboys than I thought!

Posted in: Boy who moved to Yokohama from Fukushima bullied at school See in context

Unbelievable. I love most things about Japan, but this article highlights some of it's worst flaws; a corrupt and negligent corporation that destroyed the live of countless people, the culture of bullying that Japan allows to fester, and the woefully inadequate actions of schools that are responsible for protecting its students. The fact that a victim of the Fukushima disaster is being victimized a second time at school is heartbreaking. I SOOOOOO wish that this bullying had taken place in one of my classrooms. You can bet that the situation would have been handled MUCH differently.
