You guys are negative on EVERYSINGLE article. China has 1.3 billion people, the visas have been relaxed..and the most recent poll by the chinese government during the lunar new year showed that chinese voted Japan as their preferred destination. 18 million is perfectly achievable, especially if the koreans finally come back after the fukushima scare in a few years. Japan has extremely high potential, just last year british magazines and newspapers polled Japan and Tokyo as the #1 for tourist satisfaction. Stop being so damn negative all the time.

The article is incorrect, they agreed to cut the corporate tax by 5 than increase it through a surcharge by 2.5% for 3 years. So the corportate tax will be cut by 2.5% and than another 2.5% in 3 years.

And the murder rate has been decreasing every year for more than a decade, and the murder rate for young people (young people murdering others) is also decreasing.

It doesn't matter if its the 2nd day in a row. If there was a stabbing everyday of the year, thats 365 murders a year, still the lowest murder rate in the world. In reality Japan has over 1,000 murders a year..in other words more than 2 a day...and guess what that is the lowest murder rate in the world.

Sorry guys but the fact of the matter is Japan has a lower crime rate than basically everysingle western countries. You can claim all you want that Japan has more nutcases with knives, but the statistics do not show it. By the way just about 2 weeks ago a nutcase here in the USA cut off his childs head and put it on the road for his wife to see it. Nutcases are everywhere in the world, and statistically, when it comes to crime Japan has less of them. It is a fact.

Like always Japantoday will have tons of hater comments on anything japanese but I quite like that design and the fact that its a hybrid. Seems like a pretty good car, I might buy it.

Considering that NASA and the NHTSA themselves said the overwhelming majority of all sudden acceleration cases were DRIVER error this should indeed be thrown out.

Nuckinfutz post is absurd. 40% of japanese hotels turn away foreigners? Please provide a source, even 10% is too high..a more accurate number would be 1-3%.

Japanese food IS worth travelling miles for. It is rated the foodie capital of the world by the Michelin guide (the most influential food guide on the planet)...especially when compared to terrible quality standards in China.

But yes the fukushima problem ruins the food image.

Japan should lower the rate to 30% from 40%

Now people might say its crazy to do that since the debt is huge...but keep in mind that it might lead to a RISE in tax receipts. If the companies receive more income it is very possible they will contribute more in taxes even with a 30% rate..not to mention more income tax and sales tax on more workers at home. Also Japan needs to do some very strong action against the yen like the SWISS have done...and at least bring the exchange rate to 85 yen per dollar. While that is still strong that is generally the rate companies cite as where they need it to be to be profitably...and also with a 10% tax reduction 85 is fine.

Also keep in mind Genetic engineering and other branches of medical science are increasing exponentially, soon Obese USA will have a life span the same as Japan...and probably withint the next 2 decades there will be anti aging regenerative medicine (for example repleneshing telomeres) and within the next 50 years...immortality will probably be within our grasp.

You guys should look up the breakthrough scientists had with anti aging medicine in mouses, they replenished the telomeres and an elderly almost dead mouse "returned" to life as a young adult mouse.

Very exiting times we live in.

Posted in: Japan may soon lose top longevity ranking See in context

This entire article is speculation, and not the reality. Japanese life span is NOT declining. The most recent report shows the lifespan continues to increase, and no australia and others have NOT overtaken Japans total longevity.

And about the rising fatness..well first of all it may be true for men but not women. Japanese women's BMI is LOWER today than it was 30 years ago. I would post a link but the last time I posted a link my comment was deleted.

Also smoking rates are decreasing and alcoholism is (very slowly) decreasing in Japan..and those are among the highest killers for japanese men.

So as of 2011 Japans lifespan is still the longest in the world and following the trend that wont be changing any time soon. Suicides and the heat of future summers may take a toll on it though (many elderly die every summer from the heat and if Japan continues having electrcitiy problems than thats definately a problem).

and now that Japan is slowly getting back to normal, what do people do? Just complain and say since they were saving power Japanese people should expect to continue with the subpar service...for what? The rest of their life...? Give me a break.

Return to normalcy = good, I dont know what planet you guys live in. I guess japanese people should suffer forever because mother life is a bitch, awesome logic guys.

Very good post rainman, except for scandinavia basically any western country would look like a joke compared to Japan during this disaster. Cut train service?? Lets have a riot and burn cars and loot some shops!

Also I would rate japanese cities like Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Nagoya ahead of Tokyo for quality of life...maybe even Kyoto (since they like lower density and all)...and yet those cities are not even in the list despite the fact their metro populations are about the same as the cities in the top 10...

The quote saying low density might be a positive for us westerners since our dense cities tend to be nasty cause people are so obnoxious. But in places like Japan, Korea and Taiwan the high density is not a problem at all, I actually prefer it because of how convenient life is and compact everything is and yet clean. I am assuming Tokyo ranked low (still higher than anything in the US though and the 2nd largest megalopolis [new york, paris, tokyo, london]) is probably because of the political stability.

To be honest I would choose Paris and Tokyo over any of the top 10 cities anyday (and yes I have been to Canada and Australia, I also studied in Canada for 2 semesters).

No. not really. The fact that it is public doesn't matter here. NHK is big in Japan while PBS is nothing here. It wouldn't be fair to compare PBS with NHK since PBS is so terrible.

The BBC would be the best comparison for NHK. The BBC is better than NHK...but the BBC is better than everyone else too.

What is up with all the non japanese bashing everything in Japan? I gladly prefer NHK over the crap at FOX and MSNBC any day. Japan's media is bad...and America's (my country) is worse...you can't have it all. At least CNN is pretty decent and tries to be non partisan but it's the biggest bore ever.

Sure not everyone does it...but as Hong Kong's media report shows even while they were filming several tourists did stupid things such as bending over the rails to take pictures.

I have no idea what whiskeysour is talking about. Hong Kong Media has a news report of the EXACT location of where she fell. There is only ONE sign and guess what? There are tons of canadians/americans tourists standing on the rails, extremely dangerously to take pictures. Sorry but this is not just one stupid girl, it seems very common. Look at the video

http://youtu.be/SjZrVw9gnUg

You can see several people standing way too close over the edge..a simple gust of wind or a bump from someone and they will fall to their deaths.

In other words whiskeysour is way too harsh on this young girl. She made a stupid mistake...and will never be able to learn from it.
