Thatching a roof is also illegal in many parts of Japan.

When I bought my house in rural Chiba prefecture, one of the conditions of the purchase contract was "no thatching permitted".

There's no hope for a revival of thatching under the current regulations.

Posted in: Man robbed of ¥3 mil on Nagoya street See in context

Bags of cash are indeed necessary.

When I bought my house here, I was unable to get a mortgage. The real estate company demanded cash for the price of the house.

To be paid at their office on a Sunday, when of course the banks are closed.

I requested that millions of yen be taken out of my account at Japan Post Bank. After answering all their questions about whether I'd had a phone call from someone posing as my child or grandchild in desperate need of money, or if the money was going to Iran or North Korea, and what I was planning to use it for, etc., etc., they had the cash ready for me to pick up a couple of days later, on a Thursday.

I took a friend with me for protection.

Hid the wad under the cat toilet until Sunday.

Got it safely handed over to the real estate agent, who then paid the previous owner, who was sitting there waiting for it.

He gave me the keys and headed for Yokohama with his bag full of cash, much more than three million yen.

Mizuho suggests that people whose ATM cards have been eaten by Mizuho ATMs should use convenience store ATMs?!?

But those unfortunate people don't have their cards now, so they can't use any ATMs!

Out here in the inaka in Chiba-ken cash is a necessity.

For example, my doctor (G.P.) and ophthalmologist, and the pharmacy associated with their clinic, the local acupuncture/moxibustion/massage clinic, dentist, and orthopedic clinic, are all cash-only.

Food purchases can be made using cards or e-money if you shop at a supermarket or convenience store, but the small shops that sell local produce all take only cash.

Posted in: Worried by pandemic, unmarried Japanese couples want legal protection See in context

Regarding hospitalization and consent for treatment, etc., there is a way in Japan, even if you're not officially related to each other.

Go to a goseishoshi lawyer and make a "power of attorney for personal care" contract.

No need to be related or married - My best friend and I made one of these contracts, and got it notarized, so when he was hospitalized I was entitled to authorize or refuse treatment for him, meet with doctors and get updates, etc., etc.

There is also a similar contract agreement for property (I was able to access his bank account and pay his bills) and another for post-mortem mandates and post-mortem gifts (in lieu of a will).

Once notarized, these gave me the authority to arrange for cremation and take his cremains to the temple of his choice, sell his property to cover funeral expenses, etc., and keep any property he wanted me to have.

Cashless requires electricity.

After Typhoon 15, our local 7-11 (for example) had no electricity (no electricity for the store, no cell phone towers in the area functioning). Therefore, cash was the only way to shop.

Posted in: Post-typhoon blackout raises disaster readiness questions in Japan See in context

Here in Sanmu-shi, the SDF has been at my closest city office (Sanbu no Mori Araragikan) for at least a week, providing generators, water trucks, and hot baths in army tents behind the office.

I got my power restored last night, after ten and a half days of no lights, no street lights, no water, no landline or computer, and constant "out of area" messages on my cell phone for both calls and one seg.

The Araragikan had staff there on Monday, hours after the typhoon, working without electricity, but with running water available from outside taps so we locals could fill our water containers. I've learned that it takes at least two 2-liter PET bottles of water to fill a bucket with enough water to flush a toilet.

Once they got a generator going, there were lights and air conditioning and outlets to recharge cell phones and laptops.

By yesterday, things were positively luxurious - handouts of 500 ml and 2-liter PET bottles of water, vegetable juice, wet wipes, baby food, crackers, candies, 100-yen size bread, free Indian curry with fresh-baked naan from restaurant truck volunteers, free omusubi (3 types), free yakiniku and yakisoba and cup noodles, and, and, and...

Seeing the lengthy lines for water, etc., in places like Ichihara and Togane, I'm gladder than ever that I live in the "inaka". In the longest line here for filling containers from the outdoor taps there were 4 people ahead of me.

About not flushing toilet paper:

In some countries/cities in Asia, you're not supposed to flush it.

For example, Taipei.

https://international.thenewslens.com/article/60020

So without signage like the one Yubaru cited, Asian tourists might not know how things work in Japan.

The world map on the following site shows that countries where you SHOULD flush the paper are definitely in the minority.

Posted in: 11-year-old girl killed after wheel loader hits kids with impaired hearing See in context

Another fatal accident - another one NOT caused by a senior driver!

And what does the kids' impaired hearing have to do with anything?

From the photo it looks as though they were on the sidewalk, separated from traffic by a hedge.

Hearing ability has nothing to do with walking on a sidewalk.

It would be sufficient to state that they were walking home from school with their teachers.
