This is just my opinion. They wear literal masks like we in the west wear our ' psychological masks " . Here in the west we know how to put on a 'face' that says "i am busy don't bother me " . Or that vague look that tells others nothing aout what we are feeling or thinking. I guess every civilization has their own ways.
