I’ve been an English educator for almost 15 years now. I can tell you that American students don’t like English because they don’t see how it is important as they already speak the language. I’ve also seen students from Latin America, Asia, Spain, say English as a is a boring, irrelevant school subject; they don’t see how important it is. Probably that’s what’s going on with Japanese seniors. They may think English is irrelevant.
