Posted in: Half of foreigners in Tokyo have experienced discrimination: survey See in context

I guess all of us who have been living here for more than 10 years realise and know for a fact that Caucasian foreigners are treated different than non Caucasian foreigners.

And as far as the survey goes discrimination exists everywhere, not just in Japan. Japan however, is more tolerant and welcoming than every other country I have been, and the long list also includes the country of my origin. (Before everyone starts pointing fingers I would like you all to know that I am of Indian ethnicity and by default we are discriminated very rudely, everywhere except here in Japan).

That being said, one will always find all sorts of people everywhere and thankfully there are very less of the discriminatory kind here than one comes across in other more so-called advanced and welcoming places/countries.

For those who have something against mobile contracts. A word of advice...do not sign up new contracts or renew handsets at all those flashy electronic stores or resellers. Going directly to to the carrier shop will save you having to sign up for things you don't want. Docomo followed bu AU have the best service. Softbank and notably Ymobile not so much. Basically all resellers get commissions and a contract signed up with all extras is worth more in commissions.

By going to carriers directly one can sigh-up for a basic handset and all you can call plan only, no email, no internet etc. Which is something one cannot do at Biccamera or Yamada etc.

They really need to re-think their morning menu. As someone who does not eat pork I cannot understand why they would have only one non-pork item (fish burger) in the morning menu. There are so many days in a month one can look forward to having a bland fish burger. Even if they offered beef burgers in the morning, i would still avoid it because they will only be heating up the beef and pork patties on the same skillet and thus aggravating the situation. Those arguments aside, people looking to eat healthier tend to steer away from McDonalds altogether.

Posted in: Will Apple Pay be the next iRevolution? See in context

Credit card companies charge businesses 2.7 percent of every transaction. Apple will have to settle for a figure less than that if they hope to compete here, that is also after factoring in the cost of the special terminals Iphones will need and, paying local handlers a cut from the 2.7%. Their 30% commission model will not work here. Plus most importantly why doesn't every one understand that we as consumers need better batteries in our devices if we are to use them for everything the corporations are throwing at us. For all intents and purposes my dumb phone already does everything I need it to do (incorporating my credit card and train pass etc) without having me worry about having enough juice to call home at the end of a long day..

Thank you all, After reading the article and everyones comments I have realized that subconsciously we as parents were forcing all these rules on our child just so that her playfulness doesn't bother anyone. Well from now on I will not stop my kid from behaving like a kid and let her 'meiwaku kakeru' as much as she wants, because as the ratio of older people increases, the suppression on childhood will increase and I cannot be a part of that.

Duh! raising taxes without raising salaries and expecting consumers to go all out on spending sprees...I understand the Japanese people to be patriotic but, not that patriotic. Plus all prices in shops do not display with the tax included (as was required by law before), confusing a lot of consumers. Most vendors will have that below the displayed price in small print or just add ー税抜

Posted in: Which industries do you think Japan still leads the world in? See in context

Japan's strength mostly comes in applied sciences, where new materials used to manufacture products all over the world, are developed, made and sold here. A few examples include chemicals used for producing all those rechargeable batteries found in all electronics, chemicals and paint used by armed forces all over to hide their equipment and aircraft from enemy radar. a whole bunch of critical components used in the manufacture of commercial aircraft. And since they are all patented no one else can manufacture them plus we all know that no one just shares patents.

Posted in: Japan temporarily halts aid to Vietnam over bribery case See in context

I don't get it, Why do they have to pay bribes. The Japanese government is giving money to Vietnam to develop Vietnam's rail system, granted that the JTC would want the actual construction to go to Japanese interests but, still the Vietnamese government is getting a free rail system.

Then why the bribes?

If the Vietnamese do not like the offer then they can go out and look for another party to fully fund a train system from scratch for them. And the Japanese can use their ODA in some other place they were forced to overlook for some reason or the other. There are nearly 200 countries and I bet nearly all would openly embrace a free train system for their people, no questions asked.

How hard can that be?

He did not pay taxes on his earnings and wants his losses to be tax deductible (as far as I understand, horse racing wins of more than 2 million yen/year are considered as taxable income and are subject to a 10% income tax. Lottery wins are exempted regardless of the amount). I gather this is just a simple case of getting caught while 'trying-to-cheat-the-system', and he got caught. He definitely will get what he deserves. The Guy did actually reveal how he earned all that money he spent, if he hadn't then he would have been in totally different, much more severe jam.

By the way, AU(KDDI) is also planning a similar data/voice price-plan implementation for later this year.

Posted in: Japan lifts self-imposed ban on weapons exports See in context

After browsing through all comments above, I find some very biased because supposedly peace loving European countries (namely Italy, Switzerland, Sweden etc) are the biggest producers and exporters of firearms and other defense and offence capable systems. Also Japan's ban on weapon exports is self -imposed and not forced. Plus the production capability was always there, it never stopped functioning and produces various critical parts and complete products. An example can be given of the F-16 fighter jet which till recently, was manufactured by Mitsubishi before production was stopped altogether.

This is just a bunch of people looking for cheap labour. I would like the readers to consider how many of you are comfortable surviving on 100,000~150,000 yen per month, with no insurance coverage, rearely paid transportation, no accommodation provided and families to take care of back home. That is how much Foreigner house workers are paid. Japanese will never work for those kinds of positions and that is why these people are pushing for those reforms. Oh! and the immigration in an undulated response of the current governmental policies, is actively cheating foreigners out of their visas and throwing them out.

Posted in: In Japan, General Motors has low sales, but high hopes See in context

I dont get it, What is all this fuss about there being informal barriers for these American automakers? I mean what exactly are the barriers? If there are any such barriers then I guess they are the same for the Germans, Italians and the British. Funny thing is all if their representative automakers sell more cars than the Americans.

If we can do a simple comparison test it is strikingly obvious that American car manufacturers have very rigidly un-flexible product line-ups. First of all American cars are huge, hell, even cars made by Japanese manufacturers for the American market are huge and not sold here. Why? because they are obviously huge and would not fit on most roads. They have terrible turn-radius's and hence, on top of the driver having poor visibility due to him being in the car sitting in the wrong side, it will prove difficult for him to maneuver. Actually come to think of it, most of suburban Tokyo has roads with narrow lanes and still narrower sidewalks making these cars literal killing machines.

Secondly American cars are notoriously fuel inefficient. (apart from the Tesla, which surprisingly is a normal sized car and might actually sell well here, once it becomes available for sale)

Thirdly, a lack of respect for Japanese road rules. I say this because American manufacturers know this and still refuse to make right-hand-dive cars. There are exceptions but, those are the models that do not already sell well in the U.S. Do they think that the Japanese people are not worthy enough to drive a Mustang, Corvette, Viper or a Camaro. Even sedans like the Charger and Towncar. I mean these are the cars we see in movies and secretly long for but, cannot own because of all the above factors racing through a potential buyers mind when he is deciding to get something he can comfortably enjoy going out in.
