Posted in: Japan to restrict heated tobacco use but gives up on indoor smoking ban See in context

As far as I've heard, data from other countries shows that business goes up, not down when smoking is prohibited. People said Starbucks would never survive in Japan because of its non-smoking policy. It's thriving.

It is utterly ridiculous to allow minors into any public location that permits smoking indoors. The fact that the LDP is pushing back against this shows that they are a party that is not to be trusted.

Really? That's funny because I have had money in banks without a hack my entire life. I had my money in Coincheck for literally one week when it got hacked.

Posted in: Virtual currency is recognized in Japan as a form of payment for goods and services, but how can tax authorities determine if bitcoin investors, who made millions if not billions of yen last year, are evading taxes? See in context

Thanks for the reply fxgai.

You are supposed to pay tax, after you "realise" any profit, e.g. after you sell it back.

I hear about a lot of people using 'cold wallets.' i.e. They've purchased the crypto coin, and then they have the code for it offline. It seems you could take that code somewhere else and retrieve the fiat (realize the profit) somewhere else without the government knowing about it.

If I trade for a currency and the currency increases in value, I have to pay taxes on it? Does the government pay me if I trade for a currency and lose money?

I don’t like that most people have never heard of Hanukkah here.

I don’t mind most of the tunes I hear walking around, with the exception of the super Jesusy ones.

As Peter says above, safety depends on your own behavior mostly.

Meh, I say where you go has a huge influence on your safety. My buddy was mugged twice from behind in Oakland. Unless, of course, you think simply walking is behavior that affects your safety?

But let's not limit safety to simply interactions with other people. Another friend of mine was attacked by two pitpulls (also in Oakland). And you should also consider traffic accidents when discussing the open-ended term 'safety'.

Departing foreigners who used to pay (until 2012) the heftier 're-entry-permit-to-retain-your-visa-tax' shouldn't have to pay this new tax.

Posted in: Junior high school student laces teacher's lunch with laxative See in context

The article says she poured it back "at the start", so presumably no, she hadn't touched it. The kids must have dished it up for her and given her big helping.

I'm all for kids being kids but they must have added an amount of laxative that exceeds the line where things like this can be treated as hijinx. People getting ill and going to hospital is not funny.

Yeah, I realized this immediately after posting and then couldn't find a way to delete my post. Thanks.

I still find it gross to pour from your bowl back into a communal pot, even if you haven't touched anything in your bowl yet. It's like taking a carrot and dipping it and then taking a bite, then taking the other side of the carrot and dipping it in again. Not technically a double-dip, but still poor form.

Posted in: Trump says tougher gun laws not answer after Texas shooting See in context

The "criminals don't follow the law so only law-abidding citizens are hurt by gun laws" argument is utterly asinine. Less guns is directly correlated to less gun deaths throughout the world. So, you make an incentive to get rid of your gun (buy-back programs) which leads to less guns and less gun deaths. You make mandatory background checks which means less guns can be purchased which leads to less guns and less gun deaths. You make licensing expensive, tedious, and every few years, which leads to less guns and less gun deaths. You increase the penalties for having an unregistered gun. You increase the penalties even more for using an unregesitered gun. You also make severe penalties for giving or selling your gun to someone else privately. All of these things combined WILL help America. Yes, of course, SOME criminals will still get guns and use them. But these kinds of steps will make it more difficult and more risky for them to acquire. The alternative is asinine.

Posted in: Trump says tougher gun laws not answer after Texas shooting See in context

Some of the toughest gun laws in the US are in areas that have literally hundreds of shooting deaths per year.

Yeah sadly Chicago is right next to several states that have some of the least strict gun laws. A study came out recently that showed a huge number of the shootings in Chicago happen with guns purchased in neighboring states with lax laws.

That would suck to buy those 100s and get in trouble for it when you are in the States. Time to invest in a pocket blacklight!

If you exchange less than 30man they don't check IDs. If you exchange more, they check your ID and ask the ludicrous questions, "What do you plan to use this money for?" and "Where did this money come from?" Umm, it came from my job and I plan to buy things in the States...

Seriously, what criminals are they catching with this questioning method?

Key findings of a study on gambling show that despite MOST individuals having gambled at some point in their lives, pathological gambling problems affect a small minority of people.

"Almost all national surveys concluded that most individuals have gambled at some point during their lives, with more gamblers than non-gamblers.

Lifetime prevalence of combined problem and pathological gambling across the world ranged from 0.7 per cent (in Denmark) to 6.5 per cent (in Estonia). Past-year problem gambling prevalence varied between 0.12 per cent (Switzerland) and 5.8 per cent (Hong Kong).

Despite Australia’s reputation for the largest spend on gambling activities per capita, the two studies cited put Australia’s problem gambling prevalence rate at 0.05 per cent, at the lower end of the scale compared to other countries – it is on par with the UK, but far below the USA (4 per cent) and Canada (2 per cent)." https://www.responsiblegambling.vic.gov.au/information-and-resources/research/foundation-research-program/giro-research-updates/january-2017/problem-gambling-prevalence-global-comparisons

Perhaps draconian was too strong a word, but certainly outlawing adults from doing what they want to do with their own money is indicative of an overprotective, nanny state.

Posted in: Do you support legalized casino operations in Japan? See in context

You can't have freedom if you don't allow people to make adult decisions and do what they want with their own money. Are you against freedom Maria? The vast majority of people who walk in and out of casinos don't have a problem with the gambling. In fact, they have fun! Are you against fun? Your argument is analogous to banning alcohol. SOME people have a problem, but MOST adults are able to handle themselves. For those who can't, there are rehabilitation programs, not draconian laws that exacerbate problems and take away freedom.
