@monty

If you keep the borders close, this would not happen

Agree about closing borders to keep infections out. However, you do realize that viruses mutate anyways? It’s not a case of people letting in mutated viruses etc.

It is more than worrying to think that a country with the worlds third biggest economy and so-called ‘better’ handling of the pandemic than most other countries is already on the brink of collapse in terms of medical facilities. Especially when you think of the size of the population and the percentage of elderly.

Apart from reasons of bereavement or visa expiration etc, I really don’t know why people are flying.

@Reckless

Thankfully winter in Tokyo has been very mild so far and there are opportunities to get fresh air. Things may get worse as it gets colder and folks are stuck indoors all day.

Have you tried opening a window, mate?

@burning bush

Tell me, why do you assume a transgender woman/ man would threaten others in a bathroom? Sat in a closed off cubicle literally going about your business and all.

And for what it’s worth, you’ve probably used the bathroom at the same time as a trans person countless times. And guess what, it hasn’t affected you whatsoever! Isn’t that amazing?

People do also realize that with time, a virus will naturally mutate and strengthen in new forms? Closing borders will limit such new strains from entering but it’s technically already here mutating on its own.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told reporters Monday that the government implemented the new arrival restrictions to "protect our citizen's lives and livelihoods, by taking measures in advance"

Id like to know what dictionary this man reads when he defines “in advance.”

Posted in: 18% of Japanese universities remain mostly remote due to pandemic See in context

The reason classes are continuing online is because of social distancing issues within classrooms and on campus. It’s simply impossible to socially distance in EVERY classroom that is needed. Team that with students meeting friends outside lessons, commuting and so forth, plus the fact that you have students coming from abroad plus teachers/ professors from abroad, it’s simply impossible to make it work right not. Just one infection would close the Uni and how would such international students go home. It’s simply impossible to manage at the moment.

That said, I agree fees should be reduced. Also, students also have the option to bow out and return/ start uni when this is more under control or finished with.

Posted in: Japan to suspend new entry of all nonresident foreign nationals from abroad See in context

@pukey2

Exactly. The world over, people will always be pro this/ anti that and so forth. It all starts with ourself.

The only real blame is on the Japanese govt for lack of governance and irresponsibly starting a travel campaign during a pandemic. Oh, and planning to hold and focusing on a global sports event before even controlling their own domestic situation concerning covid. Madness!

Posted in: Japan to suspend new entry of all nonresident foreign nationals from abroad See in context

@monty

Yesterday, on my way to work and on my way back home, I saw countless of foreigners walking around without mask.

It is our own fault.

Because of such foreigner idiots, it is no surprise, that we are getting blamed for the virus

Really? That’s strange because today on my way into Kamakura, I counted 46 people without wearing masks. They looked pretty Japanese to me.

My point: it’s useless saying it’s one or the others fault. We have to deal with this together.

So I guess 2021 will be the same like 2020....probably

There were a few reports in the UK news of the govt saying it will take most of 2021 to vaccinate the country.

I hope Japan speeds up a little and this start date of March isn’t true. It will surely take us well into 2022, as Japan always has about 50million more population than the UK.

Posted in: Tokyo tourism sector worried as elderly asked not to use travel scheme See in context

It’s bizarre that the government are advising the elderly not to participate in this mad campaign YET encouraging the young/ the group with the highest case of infections (according to the questionable data given) to keep participating and keep spreading the virus. Utter insanity!

Posted in: Japan voices grave concerns about jailing of Hong Kong activists See in context

It amazes me how Japan is always so interested in showing political upheaval in other countries - literally on the daily basis via their “news” channels yet somehow, Japan is only ever shown as peaceful. I’ve yet to see the weekly demo at Kokkaigijidomae shown on TV.

Posted in: Tokyo gov't to ask older people not to use travel campaign amid virus spike See in context

Younger people have no time to travel. They must go to work.

@monty, Well, that depends what age group you are specifically talking about. I work at a university here in Tokyo and the students are out meeting their “circle” and club members all the time, as well as sports clubs meeting for practices. One student even showed me their circle “event photo last week, which was a picture of roughly 15 students all huddled together giving peace signs and none wearing a mask.

The young (according to the numbers given for infections) tend to be in the highest category. They don’t only pose a risk to themselves but also to other age groups they interact with. I don’t feel comfortable as it is them being allowed to socialize the way they are at the moment. The travel campaign will still cause more harm than good in the long run.

This article is vague. Revealing your sexual orientation is very different from revealing your gender identity, so which is it? Being gay or being transgender do not automatically go hand in hand.

I feel like the gov. are just placing emphasis on “wearing a mask.” Granted, it’s a preventative measure but what about advising on other measures? Wearing a mask will not simply rid the world of corona.
