Posted in: Prosecutors appeal verdict in ex-Nissan executive Kelly's trial See in context

A bit late to mention this but, who makes the decision on Nissan's behalf to plead guilty?

It's not a plead guilty like in Perry Mason.

CEO and board at the time of the case make the decision and represent tha company in courts (even if they have done nothing as those that were in charge before did it). Nothing special.

They had to clear the plate, settle the matter, accept fines with tax authorities and stock exchange autorities, otherwise the company could not continue operations.

It seems that is done to deliberately strengthen the prosecutors hand, which is an OBVIOUS conflict of interest since Nissan is also the main plaintive here.

No, Nissan is not a plaintive in this case (the Greg Kelly one in Japan). There were 3 co-defendants : Ghosn , Kelly,

, but a co-defendant. There are several cases that came after Ghosn's antiques were investigated.

I don't think they have a real choice. They are only deciding when.

Those that stay in Russia are not be able to work as usual due to all sorts of disruptions, lack of safety for their workers. That won't get better and it's even possibly that the authorities kick them out soon in a revival of 1917.

A can of soda is not such a luxury. There are all sorts of brands. If that lasts, a few useful objects may be missing in Russian shops. Could be things like medications, spares for equipment.

A childish remark

We're commenting a childish article. Well we need some futility to distress.

 Putin’s dog probably licks him

A couples years ago I heard Putin say in itw that she was biting him a little sometimes when they were fighting in the snow, and that she was more defiant of his superb authority than the others in his country... and then he refused the offer of gift of a male Akita, so they could breed hinting that he couldn't deal with a whole tribe of such "devils".

It seems he's not fearless after all : we should try sending a battalion of puppies to Moscow.

Posted in: Can healthy people who eat right and exercise skip the COVID-19 vaccine? See in context

How does that work? Where did you get the passport? Do they just check it when you're entering a restaurant etc? What is on the passport? I'm quite interested.

In France, you get a full pass when you get second shot of vaccination (it becomes valid a week later) . Othewise you get a temporary one that lasts 48 hours when you get tested negative at a pharmacy.

The passport is a QR code (on your phone or printed, you can have both), it's valid for EU. For foreign travelers that are vaccinated in other countries, they need to ask a code online.

A staff scans it at entrance, if it's OK, you get in. If not, you stay out. If you are refusing to present a pass and still get in, they call the cops and they come. They can use a phone to scan (there is an app) or a laptop with a USB scan. Normally they get no info about you, that only says yes or no. They cannot check your id.

It's for restaurants and cafés (even to sit down outdoor), theaters, certain commercial centers, events, sports centers, to board intercity transports...(authorities decides depending on covid rates, list changes often).

The police controls randomly and they check your id. If you're caught with a forged pass or someone else's, you face a fine, then jail if you repeat.

The managers of shops that don't control risk shop closure and long jail time from first arrest. So the enforcement is their responsibility. They hate it, but no choice.

They arrested a couple of medical staff that were creating forged passes in the data base. They got express trials, been booked for months, banned from their jobs... Not the same pace of justice as for Carlos Ghosn or Nicolas Sarkozy. Well they can't hang heads at the entrance of the city, but that's the idea.

That seems well accepted. My town is a kind of ghetto with a number of hot blood characters and for a while they asked it at the only local supermarket, which was a problem for the many families without a car. But it seems there were not even people discussing it at shop entrances. Well there were many casualties in the suburbs. It's possible the crowd would have even more sympathy for a crack dealer than for someone making a public rant over Covid rules.

The "anti pass" activists we can see in the demos, I have no idea where they come from. It's not impossible they have a pass and show it when they are "off duty".

Can vaccinated people skip eating right and exercise?

Yes... to a point. You're not a short term threat for society. The paradox is that self-sabotaging of health is an epidemic, but it is not contagious like a virus. It can be transmitted via media, but there exist an effective vaccination, which is called education.

Well, on longer term, it's a burden on society at different levels. Due to your lessened physical and mental health, you risk to inflict an additional "weight" for your employer, your family, the healthcare system, the social workers.

Should health conscious fellow citizens pay for your lack of efforts ?

Uninfected law-abiding citizens

Law-abiding citizens abide to the laws saying to get vaccinated. To go to school, get visas, get jobs, most (all ?) citizens I've met have had to prove vaccination to something.

Posted in: Can healthy people who eat right and exercise skip the COVID-19 vaccine? See in context

That type of vaccination is not about "your little case", you get vaccinated to stop propagating a virus. Period. Only valid reason for skipping vaccination is that you have a health condition that prevents it.

being in good health is a good thing, but isn't enough to protect you from Covid.

Plus you never really know if your health is that good, you may have something hidden.

Your physical body belongs to you and you only.

Your freedom stops where others' freedom starts. Others have the right of not being contaminated by you or your belongings.

Give her credit for this...

Credit the author. 200% chances it's not her idea, not her choice. The Kunaicho decides every detail of the 'royals' ' decisions (that we know about) and every word they say (in public).

Must be nice to be rich and decline to accept 150 mil. yen, I'll take it!!!

Yes, that means that couple can live with 150 M more or less. One percenters.

The thing is her family has accumulated money over the years, they all get allowances all the time and they never need to spend 200 yen at the kombini as everything is paid for them. The fortune is growing and they can care for their kids without more public funding. She has already a lot on her personnal account for the 5 or 6 yrs she's been doing attending "events". Then her Dad can give her enough to buy a penthouse in New York (what are the rates ? The Clintons bought a $10million one for their princess, that's 1100 M yen, round it at 1500 M). Well this would be totally private and we'll never know about it. Unless she does a Harry with Oprah show.... I wish she does, for our greatest fun. To shed light on the anachronism of the hereditary 'aristocracy'.

Is Krygios the Australian tennis player still the only athlete to withdraw

No. Many won't participate. Wait and see the numbers in the results every day of competition.

But don't blame the athletes. Most can't afford refusing a big competition. Even if they find an acceptable excuse, they can't communicate much individually (that'd make 2 lines in a local media at best). The small sports totally depend on country sponsored training and competitions.

Athletes would be punished by their local leagues, maybe got their career and study scholarship terminated... for no effect as they'd be replaced in 2 seconds by the next on the list.

It's easier for Kyrgios, Alaphilippe...They are stars like Sandra Bullock that chooses between 15 roles. Their sports are businesses, they sell crap for big sponsors and for them the Olympics are like charity event they may or may not include in their busy schedule.

The lack of courage is from the politicians. They were the ones there to plan the games (including bribes to get them).

Isn't it a bit early ?

Frankly, they had a chance with a petition up to 6 months ago. Now it'd done. The Olympics are launched on the rails, they'll go all the way, but probably as an empty shell. No foreign visitors. No audience. Many teams/athletes won't show up, either because they are 'blocked' (India, Brazil... they wan't be allowed to travel, will they ?) or their authorities won't allow (Mrs Kiwi wants her isle Covid free, she will take no risk).

Some have already canceled the month of preparation they usually spend in the host country, some hosting towns have reconsidered.

My guess is countries that will feel obliged will send be reduced team for a few sports each , with each athlete flying in the day before he/she competes, flying away as soon as it's done, not even taking the time to shower and change clothes.

the Olympic athletes are some of the healthiest people alive

Artificial health for some.

The thing in case any of the precious youth gets a "long covid" with months of subpar condition, that will be treated by their country as a national tragedy.

they don't like their colleagues or their company. A long commute would not be a reasonable excuse to never go to the office. But perhaps they are in the wrong job.

That can be all of that. Coworkers from hell that don't even talk to you directly when in the office (they mail their rants, so no need to meet them ), commute is like 2 daily Paris-Dakar style races and the boring job... but regular income and paid holidays were not part of the package in times I had pleasant jobs. What bothers me with Covid is being "locked" at home for 'holidays' and daily after work time off and "remote social life". That's friends and relatives I'd like to go meet. I have virtual meeting with my kid nephews tomorrow... and that sucks to not be allowed to go to their place.
