We are witnessing a huge culture change, or at least attempt.

Are we? I'm seeing desperate attempts to remedy a fatal mistake of holding the Olympics in the middle of summer while absolutely refusing to adopt the only solution of delaying the games to October.

Akie - I don't know where to start with that reply, but I'll start with just one question - how could the government have prevented the typhoon, heatwave, floods or earthquakes this year? And in the case of any major natural disaster, there are going to be a number of unlucky people who are in the wrong place at the worng time who lose their lives. Blaming the government or the people who lost their lives, say due to the massive landslide caused by the Hokkaido earthquake, for not being prepared enough is muddle-headed at best and insulting to those who lost their lives at worst.

Shame to the expert. All these disasters were predictable based on current technologies. Yet, the expert blame on people, not on the failed system: the Abe govt. If you run a simulation on a model, if you predicted that the death rate will be high, then you, the govt, has to issue order to evacuate, no excuses.

Akie - I don't see the point you are trying to make here. Earthquakes are NOT predictable based on current technologies. Typhoons are, and so are heatwaves and flooding. The JMA were spot on in their predictions of the typhoon and heatwave, I'm not so sure about the flooding. And why are you blaming the Abe government for the natural disasters? I probably dislike them as much as you do, but you lose all credibility when you make such comments.

I do agree with yokohamarides that they are part of the problem in continuing to promote this More People,, More Business, More Consumption 20th century way of thinking, although they are hardly unique in the world for doing so, but blaming them for the disasters themselves is ridiculous.

Congratulations to Ms Osaka! Sad that she had to experience so much anger on what should be one of the happiest days of her life.

I don’t know what it is about your comments that generally give me a sick feeling, even on occasions when I can’t find a reason to disagree with them. And funny thing is I probably even love Japan more than you do.

puregaijin - I see exactly where you are coming from with that comment. I think it's the way he assumes that everyone in Japan is feeling exactly the same way as him. I prefer to use my Japanese colleagues as a barometer of feelings in the country, who will be pleased but too involved in their own lives to spend much time gloating over the victory.

There's a sad irony in that スピード落とせ sign.

TrevorPeace - By February, there will be hardly any aftershocks, and with all that pent-up energy under the ground recently released, you are probably even less likely than normal to experience a large earthquake.

People from Sapporo will be carrying on their lives as normal, so I think you should still make that trip.

Pukey2 - I think you're right there. It's likely that Ishiba was asked to stand against Abe to make his inevitable victory appear more legitimate. Ganbare Japan - I hope you were joking about Abe retiring in 2025-6!

Just when farming in Japan is hitting an all-time boom

Ganbare Japan - could you provide some evidence to back up that statement?

As far as I can tell, the number of people in agriculture is dropping rapidly as farmers are aging, and Japan's self-sufficiency ratio has remained at about 40% over the last 15 years.

You cannot just cut it to spend on everything else

hattorikun - yes you can. Announcements of plans to spend money on expensive military systems seem to be almost monthly. Some of the recent plans, for which no money has yet been spent, can be cancelled.

Or maybe perhaps some of the commentators here will be first on the front line to protect us. If so thank you very much!

A good example of reverting to a meaningless rheotorical question when you are unable to present your argument logically.

Two neighbours' rooves. Now there's a massive corrugated roof that flew from somewhere in the park behind us. Smashed into the building across from mine where some knucklehead was out just before taking video. I'm fortunate in that my apartment does not face the wind, although a bunch of splinters and plastic stuff keep hitting the net, which for once I'm thankful is there. Got some crazy video through the window. Anyway, take care, people.

smithinjapan - Keep it up! You're doing a much better job of reporting stuff than NHK!

As of 6pm Tue night it was already downgraded to a category 1. It's on the verge of becoming categorized as a tropical storm.

This is nowhere close to being "one of the strongest typhoons to hit Japan".

Japanese media need to be clearer about the actual strength of the hurricanes. It was a category 5 six days ago but nothing near that now.

Speed - The typhoon is expected to make landfall with a pressure of about 950 GPa, which I don't think has happened during the 15 years I've been living here. In this case the media are not overreacting.

Michael Jackson - it won't. The course of typhoons is predicted with very high accuracy, and usually predictions are usually no more than a few miles out

Depressing article. The obsession with the total number of medals won by each country promotes jingoism and impoverishes the quality of sports reporting - outstanding individual achievements and games get buried if there's no medal involved.

As far as I can see, interest rates cannot go up without bankrupting the government. Even with current ultralow interest rates, servicing Japan's phenomenal debt accounts for over 20% of Japanese government spending.

Way to increase tension in the area and increase the risk of an incident leading to escalation of hostilities!

A Japan Space Force (JSF) would be a logical step for the next arm of Japan Military. If Japan starts now, it could dominate Space along with USA as number one partner. Some people say "pie in sky", but JSF would protect Japan's future space resources. For instance, Space Station, colonies, and mining for rare earth on planets and moon.

Japan can't afford it. It has a massive and increasing debt, a shrinking tax base, and more urgent problems to address.

zaitoizugoodo - surprised to hear that you had problems buying a house as a foreigner. We looked at a number of places, the estate agent usually hesistantly asked if I had permanent visa and relaxed as soon as I said I had. The mortgage is also in my name rather than my Japanese wife's and the bank (Mizuho) was fine too.

Never heard of nationality-based problems from other non-Japanese buying houses either.
