Aquariums that look after the fishes are a good thing, they have doctors to take care, no predators, timely food.. life seems pretty happy in my book.

the dumbed-down, rapidly-deteriorating society government and the corporate heirarchy has allowed to hinder those people.

Sounds like just about anywhere else in the world. And by blaming the whole nation for this incident, you are already proving that you have just a little knowledge, education or experience in the complexity of fire prepardedness.

Similar behavior can be observed in many fire situations. Even with fire alarms going off people will often linger on using cellphones calling up their friends or families or log on to the net looking for more information, spend time collecting their belonging, or wait around for further instructions, rather than just leaving the premesis in the fastest most efficient manner. Or it could be the case that escape routes are physically clogged insufficient or not well-known by the public.

There is more to evacuation than a simplistic view of black and white some posters here seems to see.

Is it true that the rail companies bill the family for the cost of clean-up?

From a legal standpoint, JR is entitled to ask for damages but the policy is never enforced out of respect for the already embittered relatives.

Nonetheless, if a person jumps but survives with just a few minor scratches, I suspect he/ she will be asked to pay for some of the delay cost.

Desperate people tends do extreme things. I think the police needs to start rent out 1-million volt stun guns for each case like this to prevent things from going horribly wrong.

Peaceful photo, scenic images are nice in its own way, but portrait of people, I think, is what makes photographs more memorable.

This is the Ginza store. About a half a kilometre north from the Apple store along Chuo-dori. Courteous staff, lunch time menu is about 1,000 yen.

When it comes to Global warming, not even the best scientists can agree on how soon or how later. What we know is that history proves that nature can become really rough and inaction costs human lives. We need to be aware of the worse case and seriously prepare for major events like earthquakes tsunamis and rising sea levels.

In any civilized world, if an organization makes a mistake, the boss is held accountable and they must publicly admit that they didn't meet customer expectations. Takes the credit for successes, but apparently not failures or faux pas. I say the execs true colours are showing like a neon light. Let them take the rap as well.

Posted in: What did you think of the British royal wedding on Friday? See in context

It was extravagant and they did not need to pay from their pockets. Security bill alone cost 10 millions. However it was an enjoyable moment. TV audiences are hungry about wonderful news and images instead of devastating natural disasters, cruel and inhumane murder cases, political unrest and wars.I escaped from the reality for one night because of their wedding.Something in the world still have a magical moment for a very few people.

Yup was uplifting to see a vibrant prim proper ceremony from Britain. Nice change from all the depressing crime death and destruction stories you see on JT 99% of the time.

Despite of being a multinational corporation all the western Sony executives seems to be conveniently missing. Need see all Sony CEO's lined up manning up and do a proper Mishima style apology after a cataclysmic gaffe such as this one.

I agree with miamum as well, watching on TV and it's got to be the grandest wedding on earth. The royal princess looks very graceful and I wish her and William the best with their future together.

I believe you are talking about Sahel Rose. There was a story about her in Metropolis magazine a few years ago (about coming to Japan as a refugee).

Well, even if god was for real, merely by seeing all the horrible events that is taking place, it might be safe to say that he is vastly different from the most hopeful of our imaginings.

I'm just guessing but I think the reason Easter doesn't take hold here is because it's mostly a children's holiday and doesn't have the boy-meet-girl theme both present in Valentines and the local version of Christmas I think.

Overpriced and not too much choice really. I wish iPlayer had international subscriptions -- they only let you listen to their radios if you are overseas.

Posted in: Do you think switching to daylight saving time in summer in Japan will help ease the power shortage? See in context

elbuda, DST saves no energy. It is an out of date idea that was created to save on candles. If you want to go to work an hour early and leave work an hour early to do 20 laps at a swimming pool - no problem. You can certainly do that without DST.

Posted in: Blue Label beer See in context

It's all different, a quality one from Asahi could be better than a cheap, mass-produced beer. Also, happoshu is light so it's easy to drink like lemonade, whereas a dark Irish beer for example could be too heavy and bitter for some people's taste.

Love, I checked 7-11, Family Mart, am-pm, Lawson, two supermarkets and a sakayasan, and nobody has it yet.

Oy!!! Now people are stocking up on happoshu! those bastards!

They need to cool the reactor down for several months before they could safely remove any fuel remnants. Temperature and pressure readings from inside the reactor seems to be relatively stable.
