One thing I have learned by working for an airline is that passengers make very poor witnesses. The woman claiming that the flight attendant was in a panic was probably mad because the FA wouldn't let her take her carry-on down the slide.

@yamashi, based on that statement then the war didn't end until 1974 when Teruo Nakamura surrendered in Indonesia.

Of course the Declaration didn't mention the Emperor, I said that it was DELETD by James Byrnes And I usually don't get into the right and wrong about it. Because I'm in the minority here that believes that it did in fact end the war and save lives. I have no doubt that Japan dithered because they were hoping to get more favorable conditions of surrender. I think Suzuki probably did want to end everything but if he appeared as a defeatist he would probably be assassinated as others were. His statement that 'Potsdam has nothing for us' was intercepted by US intelligence and probably a driving force to use everything and prepare for an invasion.

I first saw this statement at the Yashukan museum at the Yasukuni Shrine and then started to research it myself. I suggest starting with Joseph Grew and the Committee of Three and see what you find. If you are anywhere near Yasukuni you can see it for yourself. It's in big letters and quite obvious.

The Potsdam Declaration had originally offered Japan the chance to retain the Emperor as part of a constitutional monarchy. This was deleted by Truman's friend and Sec'y of State James Byrnes, and of course rejected by Japan. If this part had not been removed there's a good chance that the war would have ended in July and the atomic bombs would have never been used.

In McVeigh's case, just killed 168 people. But it was a traffic stop that caught him. Why would any fool run for an outstanding parking ticket? The point is, is that there is no routine traffic stop anymore. Several cops are killed every year with what begins as a routine traffic stop.

The Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was also stopped for a broken taillight. Not defending the cops actions but you have no idea what somebody may have just done when they take off running.

I'm thinking it is something more serious that decompression. Whenever the cabin pressure rises above approx. 10,000 feet, an alarm will sound. And the first action is don the O2 mask and establish radio communication. That's also part of the pre-flight inspection. @Mark, napping pilots, not hardly. Napping pilots usually fly past the airport or don't descend on schedule. If the crew became incapacitated I'm guessing smoke in the cockpit and they weren't able to get their PBE's on in time. But with smoke in the cockpit usually you will smell it before you see it and can prepare.

Only 28 MLB players have ever reached 3000 hits. ARod is only 61 shy himself. Ichiro obviously wants to get 3000 hits but as the 4th outfielder will not get the ABs needed this season. Had he retired after last season he could have had a record all to himself. No MLB player has ever averaged 200 hits per season for an entire career. That to me is more of an achievement than 3000 hits.

Ichiro is a definite first ballot Hall of Famer regardless of getting 3000 hits. In addition to his hitting he was an excellent fielder with a great arm. If he had retired this past season he could have achieved something that has never been done, to average 200 hits per season for an entire career.

Not sure if Miami was the best place for him to go, the Marlins have a pretty solid outfield. I see him having less at bats than last season and leaving him short of 3000 hits. Even if he batted .284 again this season, he would need 550 ABs to get the 156 hits he needs. That isn't going to happen.

Tough loss for Tanaka. But you won't win many games when your team only scores one run. I have little faith in Girardi's ability to put together a line up. I'm an Ellsbury fan but he's been in a slump for nearly 3 weeks now, give Ichiro a chance! And I agree, those 2 assists on the bunts were pretty amazing.

I hear what you're saying, but Jeter has been a valuable part of baseball for 20 years. In a sport that has been tainted by PEDs, he has been scandal free.
In todays broadcast they mentioned how Tanaka saved the final game of the J-series with no rest. The starting pitcher threw 7 scoreless innings The only time that game was in doubt was when Tanaka came in, giving up 2 hits and 2 long fly ball outs. The manager later remarked that Tanaka said he was fine to pitch. I'm pretty sure that if he had donated a kidney in the morning, he would have said he was fine to pitch in the evening.
