Posted in: Pair of mangoes sell for Y300,000 at auction See in context

fruit is routinely expensive in Japan

That's pretty misleading, fruit is maybe slightly more expensive but paying $3000 for some mangos is just as crazy in Japan as it would be in the US this is clearly just a super rich thing.

Man what a nightmare, you can try to shame people who want a quiet respectful environment on public transportation all you want but a group of babies playing music and having a massive gigglefest is extremely obnoxious. This whole "god forbid anybody have fun" thing is absurd have some common sense and respect for others especially in a foreign country

There's not much to be gained by continuing to bring the guy up VICE already did a great documentary interviewing him. He had a pretty interesting trip through the legal system and a pretty interesting post release career of capitalizing off his crime through books and being exploited for gimmicky adult films but constantly bringing him up is dangerous and will cause isolated young guys to fantasize about living similar lives and getting similar ammounts of attention.

What a huckster, he knows he can't win he's just exploiting the particularly unintelligent wing of conservatives. It's an embarassment on his voters that they haven't sent him packing by now especially since he caused the government shut down

Posted in: 'Haafu' to represent Japan at Miss Universe 2015 See in context

Does anyone else find katakana english really obnoxious? Just say "half" you don't have to directly translate the katakana it's just there to get as close to the English pronouciation as they can express with the japanese characters. Anyways I don't like the pick just because she doesn't look very Japanese, I don't care about Ms Universe but it seems more appropriate to pick the person most reaching the pinnacle of japanese beauty not saying the pick isn't beautiful just not in a particularly japanese way.

This is a disaster we need to end aid to israel and threaten sanctions if they continue settling in the west bank and refusing to attempt to make a deal for peace, Israel needs us infinitely more than we need them it's time to act like it and stop letting this despicable warmonger's policies reflect badly on us as allies

This is great, I hope they do raise it if that's possible, I live in Yokosuka and I loved visiting the Mikasa and the little kind of history museum that have set up inside of it learned a lot about the Russian Japanese war, great opportunity to have something similar in regards to WWII

Posted in: 3 Japanese automakers to jointly work on self-driving car technology See in context

Minority Report establishing itself as one of the best movies at predicting the future. A lot of people are kind of dismissing the self driving car stuff and saying they like driving themselves and missing that there is a lot of people out there who can not drive for one reason or anouther and for whom self driving cars would be a godsend also if they become the norm in the future there could be a tremendous increase in safety which would be great as car accidents are such a huge cause of death and injury, it would actually probably have a significant positive impact on health care costs if self driving cars were able to reduce car related injury
