Grapple?

There is no contest.

John McCain voted with President Bush 95 percent of the time in 2007 and 100 percent of the time in 2008 -- that's no maverick.

IOW, the surge is a tactic.

Where's the strategy?

Bush is good, very good, at confusing tactics with other things.

GWOT ring any bells?

We cannot distinguish patriots by whether they sport a flag or chant "USA! USA!"

Actually, those fools are not patriots. They are nationalists.

Had they been born in France or China or Japan, they'd be the same.

They are American's purely by accident of birth. Which has nothing to do with loving this country for what truly makes her great.

I didn't say anything other than the obvious:

McCain's speech was nothing special. Not great, not bad.

The Republican convention was, unlike the Democrat's, was not a convention and not an acceptance speech that strikes fear in the hearts of Democrats anywhere.

'Cause In the real world, outside the convention hall, the jeering and cheerleading Republicans can't win by themselves.

"Cause America is sick of their crap.

Whoever wrote the speech, it was a missed opportunity for the GOP.

Palin was supposed to be a new conservative. Instead, her speech sounded and read like the a farternity rah rah for the right. It excited the Repub base by attack attack attack. With her attacks on Obama, she just showed herself to be just another Republican that America knows all to well.

What utter crock.

Swift boating very well may have cost Kerry the election. Both parties know this and are prepared to go the mat. Keep things in perspective: It high campaign season, and the stakes are big.

And yet, thus the Republicans have thus far, avoided vulgar and hateful racism, and the Democrats have avoided vulgar and hateful ageism and sexism. All attacks on these lines have been in code, rather oblique.

This was not so even a generation ago.

I see that as progress.

And you should not be so concerned about civility and democracy enduring: from the begining, our politics has been personal and vicious. REad about James T. Callenders attacks on President Jefferson, or the out right libel against Jackon being a bigamist.

The truth is, democracy is messy. The Free Speech will always rub against Civility; indeed we know we have a functioning republic when people are continually offended by what others have to say.

.

And to what?

It was an ok speech. She introduced herself well, made her case that she's a regular gal with a lot of spunk, made her case with just enough credibility to sell a populist agenda: WA is broken, lower taxes, America kicks @ss, and indirect cudos to Jesus. She spend a lot of time plugging McCain, which she did very well, in a general sort of way, and really went after Obama.

Which, surprise, she is good at. Gee, who coulda seen that...

It was this bare-teeth towards Obama, and the gleeful jeering and booing of the crowd, that interests me. The most interesting thing about Palin's speech is her attacking and the near mirror-image reaction shared by the Republican delegates at the convention, and the Republican supporters on this thread.

News Flash: REpublicans like all attack, all the time.

Palin did not advocate for Republican issues very well, if at all. Her overly metered and pronounced diction when talking policy really shows she has a long way to go.

The Republicans are gonna loose.

They are gonna loose because no matter how hard you all attack try to sell Maverick, everyone knows which party has been running the country the past eight years.

Yes, McCain had to feed the salivating Right.

But don't forget, McCain like all good Americans, despises them almost as much as I. Because he has a long and acrimonious past with most if not all of the 'agents of intollerance'

Which is probably why he choose little known Palin. No history.

And no Palin wing of the Republican party.

In short, he got his cake and can eat it too.

Or so he hoped....

Telling my daughter she can breed like rabits doesn't seem like a real good idea either.

Relevance? No one, other than the Mormons and the Catholics, preach that.

Responsibilty..........Means telling your daughter not to have sex until she is ready to handle the obligation and all that comes with it, and that also means being pregnant. It's that simple.

I think you are correct -- with the important caveat that is what you teach your children (girls and boys) before they go through puberty. That is the basic good from bad morals parents instill their kids before the kids can reason.

As the kids mature into and through adolecense, then we appeal to their reason and their sense of right from wrong.

Palin -- The Reproductive Right -- is dead wrong on two counts:

fist, they instill the wrong right from wrong.

second, they stop there. Instead of using Reason to maturely nuance the basic good/bad, they just rationalize their stupid myths.

A little leeway? Why? People are responsible for their actions.

I don't care who you are: teenage pregnancy is bad. Palin and her husband skrewed the pooch three ways.

1) they did not raise her right, because they raised her Right.

Abstinence only does not work. Its not responsible to preach that nonsense to your 'kids' Yes, its that simple. I

2) it really is not to teach that crap in school, which is what Palin wants for your kids and mine.

And 3) its the same crap that pushed Palin to force her unwed, 17 year old daughter to have the baby, and marry the boy her knocked her up.

Three strikes, yer out.

Leeway? Yeah, I'll show her and her ilk the way to door.

I believe in responsibility, not original sin. My flaws are not at issue; my duties as a parent are. Its not rocket science: run with the scissors down. look both ways before you cross the street; don;t drink and drive, don't do heroin, ever. practice safe sex or don't do it.

Taking responsibility for teaching your kids is a family value. I simply cannot believe I am having this discussion with you.

As for despising Republicans, you better believe it. Republicans have shat all over a lot of things I hold very dear, a lot of things that are very dear to me.

And I hate them for it.

I agree. Palin is not a the kind of mother I'd want for my children. What we supposedly know about her:

1) She jumps on a plane while in labor. 2) Her 17 year old gets knocked up.

Bad. Period. If my daughter gets pregnant before she graduates college, let alone high school, I am a failure as a parent. Yes, its that simple.

But there's more. It get's worse

Palin -- because of her Right-wing 'pro-life' blinders -- will not only do her best to make sure that (force) her daughter to have the baby. Though I disagree with that, its not beyond the pale. What is beyond the pale is Palin is gonna do her best to make sure that (force) her daughter to keep the marry they boy and keep the baby.

This is absolutely unforgivable.

"Family values" my @ss.
