because if the shoe was on the other foot I am sure the Sri Lankan govt. would be out there trying to rescue a boat full of illegal economic migrants, right?

Australia will get kicked whatever they do and they rightfully tried to save lives first.

Posted in: Miike's action film gets booed at Cannes See in context

Miike is a genius. He, Kurosawa and Itami Juuzo did more to explore the Japanese psyche and the concept of morality than anyone else in Japanese cinema. My only regret is not being able to watch more of his movies. Graveyard of honor and Gozu, katakurikenoshiawase and even visitor Q are well worth a watch. He frequently explores the lives of non-Japanese in Japan and his actors are always amazing in their roles. Cinema is made to confront. Something Hollywood has given up on in favour of cliches and sequels. Bravo Miike San.

The Satsuma samurai DID capture and abduct the Okinawan king and defeat the Okinawan army in 1609...way before their more recent annexation of Okinawa and forced abdication of the king of the Ryukus..the Chinese do have half of the story right. There is a living heir to the Ryukyu throne.Marquis SHŌ MAMORU [Mamoru Shō], Head of the Okinawan Royal Family since 30th August 1996. How about letting the Okinawans have Okinawa? seems fairest to me.

great.People would be surprised just how much Aussie youth are knowledgeable about anime and manga.I live in a fairly country area and teach two cosplayer kids and one girl into Lolita fashion.I think it is quite nice.Lots of Lolitas in Sydney. It is a harmless and interesting part of modern Japanese culture.

Having visited the sites of much of the suffering, including the site where an entire village was encouraged to grenade and bludgeon their friends and family to death by Imperial troops, as American troops approached. I can only agree with Mr. Nakaima. I even met one of the survivors, who awoke from being bludgeoned by her father, to find everyone else dead.

Osaka has a TON more greenery and parks than Tokyo. Hattori Ryokuchi, Ryokuchi and banpaku are just a few. Osaka castle has it's homeless but not on the scale on Ueno or Shinjuku gyouen (correct name?) .How anyone could think that Osaka is more of a concrete jungle than Tokyo makes me laugh.

Maybe Mt.Fuji could be added to the list.My parents spent a day getting to the station beneath Fuji and couldn't see it.They ended up taking a photo with the huge poster of Fuji behind them.Of course, that is the elusive beauty of Fujisan to many people.

Kushiro-other than the lovely scenery outside the city and the famous birds, the city itself is a rusting smelly old dump that even plays a message over speakers that: "If you see a suspicious looking foreigner, contact Kushiro Police". My travelling companion and I nearly fell over in shock but tourists who don't understand Japanese would never have to hear it.

hmph. Just lowlife crims the lot. What about the other stories of them handing out money to earthquake victims in Kobe and then forcing women into prostitution to repay the loans they 'generously' extended.Sure they set up onigiri lines in Nagata etc but that says more about the pure failings of the cops and govt. than their generosity.

Posted in: What happens to Japanese porn stars after they retire? See in context

Pornography has existed since ancient times. It serves a purpose. If the girls and guys are protected financially and from sexual disease then I can't see a problem if it is only consenting adults. I am married to a Japanese woman who threw sex out of the window and it is sad to say that these porn stars are often the closest thing I get to sex. I am sure many married men find themselves in the same boat. Healthier for my martiage than visiting a brothel. Lighten up.
