Slapping lipstick on a pig doesn't change the fact it's still a pig! It always amazes me that companies think by renaming something it it is therefore cleansed. But what do I know, maybe lipstick on a pig looks kawaī to Japanese.

This is 100% about the "pride" of the prosecutor's office! They are NEVER wrong, and will waste any amount of taxpayers money to prove it, even when they are wrong!

If you disagree with the above statement please provide one, JUST ONE case where any prosecutor's office ANYWHERE in Japan HAS at any time accepted 1st: an initial innocence or not guilty judgment, 2nd: a retrial judgment, 3rd: any higher court ruling reversing a guilty verdict.

I am not stating my opinion on the matter, I'm just asking anyone who disagrees to prove the above statement incorrect.

Why not just: Man dies after attack by lion?

Ummm, stupid question but here goes! I'm guessing by the fact that this is a LION, not a mere house cat, that when you have an animal of such power and unpredictability that such an animal is required to be removed from the enclosure when cleaning or maintainable is being performed and put into a separation unit/cage or am I just completely off the mark here?

It's not just so simple a task as to one day switch from Imperial to Metric. Just think what it would take for just one sector, say the Japanese auto industry to convert from Metric to Imperial. ALL of the machinery, lathes, milling machines, every wrench and socket in a craftsman's toolbox and EVERY nut and bolt and the countless replacement stock would all be worthless and need to be replaced with Imperial. This would be a HUGE cost not just for the industry but for the mechanic and line worker who would have to pay, not we the tax payers.

America will come around eventually but most likely I won't be around to see it.

If they do this, they will then have to ban Sokka Gakkai, given their heavy involvement in Japanese politics.

How about coming into the 21st Century? SG hasn't been connected with Komeito since the last one!

Talk about beating a dead horse!

YubaruToday, know anyone in Sokka Gakkai? If you did, as I do first hand, you would have a different perspective! My experience with members is that they are ACTIVELY involved in Komeito, erecting posters and participating in election events, at the direction of their local Sokka Gakkai superiors as well as directed to donate to Komeito. They go all-out once the election cycle begins! Sure, the law says that religious organizations are banned from political activities but is their a paper trail, does the law say anything about individual members activities and does the law prevent Sokka Gakkai and Komeito leaders meeting in person, say for tea, guessing not so is it at all possible that Komeito is getting their marching orders from president Daisaku Ikeda, no doubt.

I have questioned my Sokka Gakkai acquaintances about pressure from their immediate superiors within the church and with some needling on my part been able to ascertain that indeed they are acting on behalf of the church's direction but the LDP/J-Gov will not start turning over stones to find out as long as Komeito is their junior coalition partner and the LDP's hold on power!

Under the envisioned system, a public entity would issue a certificate proving that the applicant is not a convicted sex offender, the sources said.

Cram schools, sports clubs and other private operators would not be required to use the system, they said.

Well, there is the loophole which will be exploited by convicted sex offenders.

Parents and child support groups have been calling for the establishment of such a system. But some experts have been critical, arguing that it infringes privacy rights and freedom to choose one's occupation, both of which are protected under the Constitution.

Maybe someone ought to explain to these so-called experts that "privacy rights" and "freedom to choose one's occupation" are not absolute under the Constitution, that there are regulations and restrictions on nearly every right.

She obviously has no friends to ask for help. Sad.

I would have to agree. I think it's hard for most of us who make comments to understand the constraints of Japanese society, whether real or conceived. "Oh, just drop the baby off at a "baby hatch" or "adoption center" like as if they are dotting the map as frequently as a convenience store or it's as simple as making a hair appointment. BTW, look up how many "baby hatches" there are scattered across Japan, guessing just one?

And then there is the stigma attached of being a single woman and having to go through all the red tape and per-natal hospital visits and the costs of it all not to mention a delivery in a hospital room probably having no health insurance working in a pub part-time. She would obviously have to have someone to be there according to the hospital when she delivers the baby so a family member or friend which she would have to involve.

Now I'm not making excuses on her behalf but merely point out the hurdles involved in a society and a governmental structure that tends to put much of the burden on the individual and leaves people with little means VERY few options or support. She will pay a very steep price for her actions and rightfully so but we must not forget that were there a more abundant means of support that there might have been a more positive outcome, a life saved, one less murder. R.I.P. little one.

Two points you have overlooked. First and most importantly, he was arrested and there is over a 99% conviction rate right there! Secondly, ANY Japanese court will side with the police in such a case so eye witnesses are unnecessary BUT are welcomed by the prosecution to emphasizes there case.

The job of a Japanese defense attorney is not to prove innocence but to convince the prosecutor not to charge. Once a charge is made the best a lawyer can achieve is try to get the minimum sentence possible.

JapantimeToday 07:15 am JST

I wonder what country she is from. It sounds like she is a drug user that overdosed on her drugs

the woman was found unconscious at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday, I'm assuming August 12th. Nothing says she had overdosed on the day of her arrest on July 6th or afterwards or that she was under the influence of a drug at any time. Are you also insiuating that this woman must be a foreigner because only they would use illegal drugs and Japaneses would not?

Maybe it's just me but being detained over a month for violation of the Stimulant Drugs Control Act seems excessive and may have more to do with her death than the drugs she was accused of possessing. Just been in Japan 30 years and have read enough stories of what detainees endure during their detentions/interrogations (confession extractions). Seems that an independent body should be conducting an investigation in such a case, not a potential participant in the death.

Posted in: 10 prefectural police departments begin trial program for treating stalkers See in context

In cases where people report that they are still being stalked, police will recommend offenders receive voluntary counseling at medical facilities or face arrest.

Why not have the Diet enact a law that allows the police to get a court order to attach a GPS location device, ie ankle bracelet, in cases where stalkers do not stop, a 3-strike rule per-say. The stalker is warned that if the behavior does nor cease that a court order will be sought to attach a GPS location device on their person and that a system will alert the police if they enter into an established perimeter of the victim, their residence, place of employment, etc. as requested.

The police can additionally provide the victim, completely voluntarily, a GPS device that can be carried say on a key chain for example so that the system could alert officers to respond if the victim and stalker are in close proximity to one another outside the established zones.

This would let the stalker know that the police know where that individual is at all times and allow a rapid response by police if a violation occurs. In addition it might give some comfort to the victim knowing that the stalker is being monitored.

桜川雪July 28 12:52 pm JST

I don't get why parents without any visitation or custody should have to pay child support. If the other parent denies them access to their child, they should then be denied access to their money.

I think there is a very valid reason for adopting this and would in a way give the J-gov a little bit of cover, well better than they are currently viewed on the subject. I would make an exception where there is reasonable and substantiated evidence, not just claims, the parent seeking soul custody has been a victim and or children in some manner. If a parent asks the court to have soul custody and NO visitation rights what-so-ever then they must waive any spousal and child support or any other compensation.

I mean if the courts are going to soul custody without visitation rights then let that be the consequence. Maybe that would deter some, maybe not all that many but at least that's NOT going to be a second stab in the back for the parent who is on the losing end of the ruling.

It seems a lot of people either slept through or skipped history classes or just didn't give a ****! If you have even just a slight recollection of recent history you would recall what happened to those who appease and capitulate to tyrants the likes of Hitler and surely the Europeans should be the last to forget the millions who perished due to the barbaric ambitions of a man who even took his own life rather than to surrender, to admit defeat and to negotiate a peaceful end to a war he himself started.

To those of you who say the Ukrainians ought to negotiate, that NATO and others who are assisting Ukraine militarily and/or financially ought to cease thereby forcing Ukraine into a surrender agreement, NOT a peace agreement as we know how fond Putin is of peace, go back and read about PM Neville Chamberlain and his policy of 'appeasement', read the Munich Agreement made between the United Kingdom, the French Republic, and Fascist Italy and Hitler in 1938 and how well that worked out for the UK, France and Italy or the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939 also known as the Nazi-Soviet Pact, the diplomatic arrangement included a 10-year non-aggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union and where that got the Soviet Union when the shoe was on the other foot and it was invaded by a foreign aggressor.

Ukraine is just defending its country m, as any of us would do if someone invaded our home!

It's extremely naive to still continue to believe this false narrative that sweet innocent Ukraine did absolutely nothing to encourage the invasion of their country.

As one of those people you say is "extremely naive to still believe this false narrative...", I would just like to know what Ukraine had done to "encourage the invasion of their country." Being naive as I apparently am, I'm curious what a country that isn't using force in any way, isn't acting aggressively towards, isn't actively or covertly trying to overthrow the leadership, the government or try to interfere in the stability of either deserves to be wiped off the planet as Putin has tried to do to Ukraine, not once but twice. And if your argument is that Ukraine had been pursuing NATO membership PRIOR to Russia's invasion of Crimea then what's your rational for Russia not invading Sweden or Finland when they were seeking membership, before Finland signed the NATO Accession Protocols? Both countries announced their intention to join NATO as a result of Russia invading Ukraine. Why didn't Russia at least get troops on their sovereign territory to block their NATO membership as under NATO charter, no country may join NATO that is in a military conflict and is the only reason stopping Ukraine from becoming a member? Being so naive apparently, I'm just looking for enlightenment.

While Putin is busy using drones and cruise missiles to destroy grain facilities and port infrastructure to support grain shipments as well as civilian housing complexes, train stations, schools and shopping malls Ukraine is targeting Russia's ammunition and fuel storage facilities and military sites. For those above who claim both sides are equivalent and are at fault lets be clear about one thing, Ukraine did not start this war nor did it provoke Russia! The Russian army invaded the soverign territory of Ukraine and lets be clear, this is Putin's war and history will call it just that. So what would you do if someone rushed onto your property, shot and killed your family members and intended to take over your house and land. Now, how would you feel if your friends and neighbors were to ask you to stop this nonsense, to make peace with these invaders, to let them have that parcel of land they had ILLEGALLY occupied and claimed for their own? What message are we sending to these invaders, to the world? What does it say about our neighbors who we had trusted and relied on in time of need that they now abandon you in this great adversity and struggle to exist?
