They need to wheel out some old men with glo-sticks directing traffic in order to get these numbers down!

Or are the babies passing away after being abandoned?

Yes. Often put into a coin locker or flushed down the toilet.

I refuse to play this game.

I'll comply when all the advertising hoardings are turned off, when the pachinko parlors are closed, and when offices open the blinds and turns off the lights.

Imagine being this callous and devoid of human instinct. I always thought the bond between a mother and baby was very strong. Not in Japan though.

The people who run the soaplands and delivery health places probably pay their taxes. The working girls don't though. They get paid cash in hand in a brown envelope.

99% of Japanese "bread" should carry a health warning. Why are the Japanese so averse to healthy, wholewheat bread?

Posted in: What do you think of the quality of education at international schools in Japan? See in context

Rote learning is good for some things, for example learning your multiplication tables, or drilling vocabulary for a second language. It is not good for other things though, like medicine, or when having to think about complex issues. Probably a big reason why doctors here suck so bad; they know all the facts, but they don't know how to apply their knowledge in the real world.

Spot on. If playing the victim were an Olympic sport, all the other countries would have to give up right away. Japan would win hands down.

Not married, but had an ex who said it didn't really matter what Japanese soldiers did in WW2, as "all soldiers" do those things. Hmm....k.

Posted in: Sharp to make English its official language in a year: CEO See in context

Here's what happens:

Meetings are held in English, and 90% of the Japanese have no idea what is being said.

Then, after the meeting, they have to have another meeting (in Japanese) to confirm what they think they heard in the previous English-only meeting.

Posted in: High court rejects paternity harassment allegations by Canadian man See in context

Why is he bothering to go to the Supreme Court?

Less than 0.5% of Japanese people have heard about this case, and even fewer care about it.

The Supreme Court will only back what the lower court ruled.

Also, way to make a good impression with his choice of dress code for a visit to a high court!

Money is not actually altogether that great

A girl I know who works for a major AV studio gets paid 500,000 yen per month (plus has her apartment paid for) for just two movies + various events like signing stuff and doing photoshoots. Not bad for someone with no skills. She likes her lifestyle.
