Posted in: Dating apps most popular way for Japanese newlyweds to meet: survey See in context

Dating apps are so weird in Japan. Most of the people straight up say "I want to get married soon". They don't really care about their partner, they just want to get married because of societal pressures. No wonder most marriages here are perfunctory and loveless. Back home, talking about marriage from the get-go would be seen as coming on too strong, and would scare most people away.

Good result. Maguire still contributed to Iran's first goal though. Why was he selected?

He clearly was very lucid when planning and carrying out this murder. Let’s stop pretending he’s “insane”.

Posted in: What do you think of the quality of food sold in convenience stores in Japan? Has it improved since you first came to Japan? See in context

I miss UK and US convenience stores where you actually get a full sandwich when you buy a sandwich, not just some measly filling pushed to the front of the packaging to trick you. Also, wholewheat bread as opposed to the refined crap the Japanese prefer.

Just think, if the one perpetrator had not fessed up, the J-police would have been totally happy to close the case as a suicide. I swear, Japan must be one of the easiest countries to get away with murder; the police certainly won't stand in your way!

People aren't "holding back" on spending! They're cancelling spending outright! This government is clueless.

I know many people who “work from home”. A total joke. They just mess around all day. Good on Musk for not pandering.

Honestly, most of the businesses which fail in Japan deserve to fail; un by eighty year old dudes who have no idea how to run a modern business.

Posted in: S Korea to take part in Japan fleet review despite Rising Sun flag objection See in context

If you want a clear illustration of the difference between Japan and Germany coming to terms with their WW2 crimes, look no further than flags. Few in Germany would want the Nazi swastika flying on their warships (yes, I know it is a federal crime to do so). But in Japan, not only do they see nothing wrong with it, they flaunt it in the face of those they committed heinous crimes against.

You just have to shake your head in sad amazement that the age of consent in Japan is 13yrs old.

There is no prefecture in Japan where the age of consent is not 18.

what needs to be done is force companies to match wage growth with at least the inflation rate if not more

Posted in: Cram school teacher arrested for soliciting prostitution from high school girl See in context

Why do so many high school girls sell themselves on social media in Japan anyway?

Work in a 7/11 or izakaya for 900 yen per hour, or earn 30,000 yen per day offering other adult services. It's a no-brainer for a certain segment of society.

Posted in: Cram school teacher arrested for soliciting prostitution from high school girl See in context

One only needs to hang around Shibuya train station in the evening or glance at how thick and numerous the call girl magazines are in Japan to know there is a huge problem with schoolgirl prostitution here. Sadly, often the girls do it willingly to get some cold, hard cash.

At that time, Woodford's case was seen as an example of how Japanese companies had a hard time dealing with foreign managers

Yes, isn’t it a pain when foreign managers pick up on years of accounting falsifications and cooking the books? Pesky foreigners. Why can’t they just ignore these things like a good Japanese manager would do?

Posted in: German named CEO of medical company Olympus See in context

I highly recommend Michael Woodford’s book all about the Olympus scandal, and the disgusting way he was treated. He only avoided the same fate as Ghosn because he notified the Financial Times of the story before the Japanese authorities could nab him on made-up charges.
