Posted in: Japan protests China news agency's call for emperor apology See in context

tinawatanabe, I heard Mao and Chiang both thanked the americans for taking decisive and strong actions to finish off the IJA and ended WW2 quickly so fewer lives would be lost. I believe the emperor and PM Abe should apologize to the Japanese people for all the pain and sufferings they had to endure near the end of WW2 as a result of Hirohito and his top brass's evil misdeeds. The emperor should also thank the americans for drafting such an effective constitution after WW2 so Japan finally became a normal country again.

It is absolutely legitimate and appropriate to have Ban attend the Sep 3 victory parade in Beijing becasue it is a victory of conscience and against the evil facism of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. It is also absolutely legitimate and appropriate for the Japanese emperor to apologize for his dad who was directly involved in invading China and caused more than 20 million Chinese deaths 1931-1945. (Imagine 1/5 of current Japanese population) That's actually way too easy for the emperor or the PM Abe to do to get the baggage off.

tinawatanabe, it is recorded everywhere. It is printed in every history textbook in the world except Japan's. These are simply historical facts. All you have to do is just READ. http://www.nationalww2museum.org/learn/education/for-students/ww2-history/ww2-by-the-numbers/world-wide-deaths.html?referrer=https://www.google.com/

tinawatanabe, you won't find that in Japanese history books for sure. Go read some reliable 3rd party history book on WW2. Even google search on the web, wikipedia, brittanica encylopedia, BBC etc.

By the way, to some of the fact twsiting blogger here, the IJA lost WW2 to the Allied powers with China as a big part of it on the Pacific side. Hirohito surrendered unconditionally to the Allied Powers not just to the americans. That is simply an undeniable historical fact.

Posted in: 63% say Japan should stop apologizing over war: poll See in context

Abe has no balls to apologize to anybody. He contradicts himself by saying it was the past generation that did the bad deeds and his generation should not carry the burden to apologize. However he keeps going back to Yakusuni to "honor" the war criminals of the past generation for their bad deeds (mass atrocities). It is very obvious he speaks in both sides of his mouth and has no sincerity in what he says. A cunning poltician like Abe earns no repsect in the international community. He is really a liability to his country and people.

Since China is one fifth of the world's population, its military strength on a per capita basis is actually very minuscule compared to USA and Russia. So this thing about China arming up is a big fuss over nothing. USA and Russia are more than happy to sell arms to any country including Japan and China. They are the ones laughing all the way to the bank.

@gokai_wo_maneku

Well, as usual, the Europeans were there 100 years before the Japanese doing their atrocities on the Chinese, but the Japanese get most mention.

Europeans did not slaughter 20 milllion chinese. Imperial army did. Of course you don't find that documented in the Japanese history books. Try UK, US or other european history books for true accounts.

Abe actually shows his ultimate arrogance and disrespect for the WW2 victims caused by the Japanese invasion by calling the mass murderers martyrs.

Posted in: World War I: Japan's ill-fated 'gift from the heavens' See in context

Those small victories actually gave the military rulers at that time (1895-1945) a false sense of military power superiority. The military rulers thought it could take over entire China in a few weeks but China was too big to swallow. That dragged on for 8 years (1937-1945). Even worse, it turned its gun on US by attacking Pearl Harbor. The whole point was the rulers grossly over-estimated its military power and its sustainability in the war. At the end of WW2 in 1945, the men to women ratio in Japan was only 1:9.

What comes around goes around. Think about it. Those who did bad deeds to others someday others will do the same to them. I see a correlation why the Russians took the 4 islands.

Heard Lee is actually a Japanese born in Taiwan. He has extended family in Japan. Taiwan's official name is Republic of China. Make no mistake for those who think it is not China. They pay homage to Dr Sun Yat San, the national father. It seems some of you are grossly misinformed about the real east asian history.

My 2 cents - US purposely "gave" Senkakus/Diaoyu to Japan for "administration" in 1972 but took no position on sovereignty of the islands. This is a very ingenious tactic for the superpower. Her action in 1972 has kept China and Japan in tension and to US benefits, it can leverage business deals from China and can push Japan forward to counter China's rise. International politics is not always as clear as it seems.

Wait a minute. What are we talking about here? Didn't China win in WW2 as one of the Allied Powers? And Japan gave back to China all the occupied territories, Shanghai, Manchuria, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc? Also later they became one of the 5 permanent members of the UN security council. Even Japan now wants to be part of that but having a real difficult time getting in. I think this 1895 war thing is over analyzed and seems a bit irrelevant.

Wasn't there a commemoration of the lost of lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WW2 not too long ago. I think Japan is the one still feeling the pain after all these years.

It seems China is on its way to replace US as the largest economy in the world in the next 15-20 years or maybe sooner. I don't think there is anything US and its allies can do to stop that from happening. Then, wouldn't it be good for the rest of the world to work with China, so many countries can also benefit economically from her success? We know China is 4.5 times of US and is 14 times of Japan in terms of population. It is a huge consumers' market. The Koreans are currently reaping in all those economical benefits.

Speaking of Opium war, China retook Hong Kong without firing a single bullet. Wasn't that amazing? Now all the big foreign powers are flocking to China to do business in peace this time. Kudos to China for her 30 years of rapid development. Other countries should not be jealous or afraid of what China has achieved. Instead we should congratulate her for her achievement and her peaceful rise.

China and Korea invited Japan in to administer their affairs.

Yeah right. That is a total moronic statement. This is the same as saying Japan "invited" US to send their B-29 to rain on the Japanese cities during WW2.

UN absolutely did the right thing on this. Don't let Abe and his rightest element weasel their way out of this one. I think it will do the country good if he will come out and sincerely apologize to the victims like a man.

US power is in significant decline and in desperation, it encourages Japan to step up militarily. Just look at Ukraine and the Middle East. What did it accomplish? The so called alliances are nothing but lip service. Each country only cares about its own pocket book and global interests. When it comes to real military engagement, each country will be pushing the other guy to go forward to the front, exactly like US is doing.

@notasap You and PM Abe alike can blow your own horn and twist historical facts as to who were the villians in WW2. However, your personal view and PM Abe 's views are only small minority views even in Japan and they are not accepted by the normal world communities.

@natasap There are a lot of people like you who have no concept and understanding of the massive scale of atrocities committed by the imperial army in China in WW2. That's the real problem. 20 million+ lives in China were lost due to the imperial army invasion.

Posted in: Japan berates China's Xi over Nanjing remarks in Berlin See in context

Abe should apologize to his neighboring countries just like his predecessors did. Then this would put the whole argument to rest. Let bygone be bygone. The fact is WWII history is well documented by the whole world, not by one particular country. Therefore it is impossible to deny the truth. Facts are facts, one has to admit wrongdoings and move on. So the next generation can develop a normal relationship. However Uncle Sam may not wish to see the no 2 and no 3 top economies get along too well because that could threaten its lone superpower status. International politics is complicated. Uncle Sam can reap in enormous financial and political benefits from both sides if the no 2 and no 3 are in enmity.
