Posted in: Myanmar junta seeks resumption of Japanese investment, ODA See in context

Stay neutral. It's best not to take sides.

"Stay" neutral? Japan has already chose sides when they decided to suspend development aid.... that's precisely why the Minister is here begging them to come back. And although I'm sure Japan only did it to follow the US, I applaud their decision.

Posted in: Tokyo’s gigantic new anime store will be among largest in the world See in context

I don't mind a good story in anime form. But the genre has long been usurped by infantilized "men" and closet pedos who only desire sexualized images and stories of underage girls. It brings the format, and Japan as a whole for promoting it, into disrepute. Is this the cultural image you want to promote to the world, Japan?

Most of the 67% that have a female executive get there by appointing an outside director that is female. It's just a box-ticking exercise.

I feel more incidents like this may happen as Tesla crushes the Japanese automakers and their economy goes down the toilet.

Tesla has sold 800,000 in 2021. Toyota sells that number in a month.

Mishima is somehow a Japanese company despite making Scandanavian-styled furniture in Silicon Valley with a Vietnamese CEO!

And they don't even ship to Japan!

Posted in: Vaccine zone: Djokovic remains in question for Aussie Open See in context

As long as he doesn't start demanding an exemption, he's free to choose not to be vaccinated. He won't be allowed to defend his title, but if it's that important to him, so be it. I'm sure others will be happy to have a competitor out the way.

Posted in: Australia cricket captain resigns after 'sexting' scandal See in context

Not really clear from this story why this was a problem, nor was it clear why he had to resign. If anything, they investigated and found "...the interaction was consensual, private, occurred on the one occasion only, was between mature adults and was not repeated." So again, what's the problem here?

With or without rigorous drug testing?

Wow, pretty low to try and insinuate the greatest Olympian of all time, proven clean over and over through hundreds of tests conducted over more than a decade, would stoop to cheating.

Police said he was identified after train station surveillance camera footage showed him lowering his face mask.

Wow, that's a worrying development for society.

Posted in: Ex-U.S. envoy Hagerty slams Japan's justice system over Nissan case See in context

It's a farce because it's the equivalent of a white-collar misdemeanor at best. It certainly is NOT the major criminal case the Japanese prosecutors are trying to paint it to be. Their lack of prosecution of the Japanese executives of Nissan who also were party to all this indicates they know as such, but are purposely going after Kelly because he's non-Japanese. Hence, farce.

Kelly is a hostage and his case is a farce, and I'm glad somebody of the status of a Senator and former Ambassador is pointing out the obvious.

Posted in: Tokyo restaurant’s bright idea: Lantern pods for you to sit in while you eat See in context

While it does look esthetically pleasing from the outside, you'd need to shout to be heard and it's got to be impractical for eating, not to mention it probably reflects light making it harder to see people. But I guess the biggest problem is that an infinitesimal number of people actually need protecting from in this manner.

Korea is even worse than Japan for the bullying bukatsu type "leadership". But two Korean managers in a row makes me wonder if some cross-cultural animosity amplified their approach.

Eta?! I know the variant is named as such from the Greek letter, but as it's also the derogatory term Japanese used (still use?) to use to describe the burakumin underclass, this probably won't go down well here.

Posted in: Mizuho Bank suffers ATM glitch; 7th system failure this year See in context

Mizuho has the most incompetent IT department. The FSA admonitions have proven to be toothless, Mizuho doesn't really care to spend more on better quality IT, and they're too big to be sanctioned in any meaningful way. And notice that since it's domestic IT they can't even pull the usual "blame the foreign company" routines that have been adopted by others in the past.

A bit surprising that Suga-san had the time to meet the spouse of the vice president. Maybe Aso-san's level or below would be more appropriate.

Exactly. Strange protocol decision, but I can only assume Japan thinks it needs to kowtow and show the US the proper level of respect.

China accusing Canada of doing exactly what they are trying to do: unduly interfere and influence another country's justice system.

But China is too arrogant to realize that all of this posturing is just making them look worse and worse in the eyes of the world. Instead, they think it makes themselves look strong.
