i always buy Japanese cars but will never buy a Nissan after this fiasco. Regardless of Ghosn's guilt or innocence his treatment has been deplorable. Why did his replacement not recieve similar treatment?

Once again the armchair commentators pass judgement on the basis of zero knowledge.............immediate conclusions that this action was financially motivated without any knowledge of the woman's circumstances. Imagine living like that for 4 months, can't have been easy for her, clearly something more than just money

I really don't know what to make of all this, but one thing is for sure, I won't ever buy a Nissan or related product as a direct result of this matter.

"High quality Canadian products"..........what are they? Almost everything I see for sale in Canada is made in China. Canada like the UK has let almost all it's manufacturing go to China for the sake of saving a few dollars. Confusing state of affiairs. Didn't Trudeau refer to Japan as China by accident, wondering why this isn't being reported here.

The legal limit for pilots should be zero. I guess that more Canadian pilots will be flying "high" now that our intelligent government has legalized marijuana....i despair

Well said strangerland. Not only is it bad enough that the poor woman has been murdered but the armchair judges suggest that the guy was her "client", based on what? The fact that she was Filipino? Not only jumping to conclusions but disrespectful in the extreme

As a Canadian citizen dead against this legalization I applaud these governments for taking this stance and publicizing it.

Posted in: Typhoon-hit Kansai airport partially resumes int'l flights See in context

The original figure given was 5000 people stranded now it's estimated to be 8000. Having been in that airport many times it is hard to imagine that 8000 is the true number. 28.8 million passengers per year averages at close to 80,000 passengers per day which also would suggest a much higher number. Where was the plan B?

Posted in: Domestic flights at Kansai airport to resume Friday after typhoon damage See in context

We are North American and have travelled through both KIX and Itami several times the last few years. The absense of hotels around Itami on international booking sites is a real issue, other than that it seems convenient and human in scale. KIX in comparison is further out and very time consuming to get to and to use. Even after the long process of checking in and security there is still usually a train ride to the gate. I cancelled staying at the compartment hotel there for fear of a tsunami soon after the recent earthquake. I have often wondered about the logic of having a major airport in the middle of the ocean in a quake and tsunami prone country. It seems a bit mind boggling that there is only one connection to the mainland and now that it is broken steps will be taken to ensure that this will not happen again. Was there never a plan B in place?

Posted in: Tsukiji fish market to stop tourist tuna viewings See in context

This is no surprise. The constantly changing rules about getting into the tuna auction previously were clearly designed to discourage visitors. I made a visit to Tsukiji some years ago, the vendors clearly resent visitors, one even threw water at me for no apparent reason. I saw the tuna hall after the auction was well finished, had the audacity to take a photo from the adjacent public area and was promptly escorted of site by a security person again for no apparent reason. if visitors are to be allowed then make the rules clear and consistent and encourage the vendors to know that they are allowed and be at least courteous to them.

"Nuclear energy now accounts for less than 2 percent of Japan's energy mix since most reactors were idled after the 2011 disaster. Only five reactors have since restarted.

While the government of pro-business Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing to start up as many reactors as possible, restarts are coming slowly as anti-nuclear sentiment remains strong and regulators have stepped up screening process.

Still, the government says nuclear energy should account for 20-22 percent of Japan's energy mix by fiscal 2030 in a draft energy plan that experts say as unrealistic"

Total insanity

I'm thinking that having paid for the tickets I have just as much right to be in business class with my family as anyone else and that if my kid cries during take off the staff should relax as the vast majority of people in there will have kids themselves and know just how things are with kids. And I'm thinking that the kind of attitues you are displaying are exactly those that the politicians are trying to change. I assume you don't have kids yourself.

This is interesting. We have visited Japan many times with our child. On our first visit we were criticized by ANA staff on our flight home in business class because our young child cried, which I was really surprised by. This was our only bad experience. Generally the Japanese people that we have encountered have been wonderfully kind to our child, including hotel staff who went out of their way to make him happy, antique dealers who gave him gifts on more than one occasion and old ladies on a bus who held him on their lap when all the seats were taken. Like most things in life it all depends on who you are dealing with, pretty obvious that some of the posters here have never had a kid of their own

Posted in: Japanese couple attacked in Honolulu face $50,000 in medical costs See in context

This story is very sad and I feel very sorry for the couple.

Unfortunately few places in the World are as safe as Japan appears to be from our various visits there and this must breed a false sense of security in Japanese people when they travel abroad. I would not dream of entering a public washroom in a park almost anywhere in the World except Japan. In cities throughout Europe and North America there are parts which are total no go areas and one needs to be very on guard at all times. Since Japan does not appear to be like this it must make Japanese people very vulnerable when they travel abroad.

Hope that they recover quickly from this.

80,000 yen for a uniform including a hat and a bag, what's all the fuss about? We regularly see backpacks like the ones in the photo for 50,000 and 60,000 yen in japanese department stores so assume that this is the norm, and according to our japanese friends it is. I assume it is just because it is Armani that everyone is making such a fuss

Posted in: Tokyo school hires guards after Armani uniform furor See in context

Doesn't a typical school back pack cost around 60,000 yen already? In North America where we typically pay about 5,000 yen for aback pack this seems staggering so 80,000 yen for a whole uniform in comparison doesnt seem that staggering
