As a long-term resident of Darwin, I'm insulted by Cletis' snide remarks. While there has been a military presence here since WW2, it has been low-key - until recently. Darwin residents who are not involved with the defence industry are not happy with this 'development' or 'evolution'. While the young, male miners and soldiers who have transmigrated here through Australian government incentives consume huge amounts of alcohol - and drugs - this does not apply generally to the rest of our community. We will be holding public meetings to ensure that these new transmigrants know how to relate peaceably within the Darwin community and we will be protesting long and loud if respective governments don't listen to long-term residents. We love our tropical environment and want to protect it for future generations of peaceful Territorians.
