So the update is that the poor victim was drugged which is why she didn't receive any bruising to her body and was still alive when thrown in the water. I just hope she didn't regain conciesness and realise what her terrible boyfriend did to her! Unbelievable! Really cannot even fathom what his motive was! So I would have expected she lost conciesness while in the car and the long drive was simply to wait for the drugs to take effect! So of course this was planned. But why so badly! He almost did nothing to cover his tracks and just as well handed himself to the police and then denied it! Crazy!

Also the police caught Gumo trying to leave Japan on the same day as the body was discovered! Pretty fast work! They must have only had a few hours!

tinawatanabe, no suffering. Basically this article is about the reasons why Germany has accepted its past but Japan hasn't. And it is a very important topic because it doesn't look like Europe will ever go to war again! Which is fantastic, no more death! However Asia is clearly at a point where history is pushing the region towards a possibble war. I don't like war, I don't like death. So we really need to understand why Japan won't get to grips with its past and instead is gearing up for war again as a result of it!

Christopher Glen, yes abdication would definitely have been a better option. Yes, let's hope hope Abe makes up for his mishaps by apologising for his previous taking-back-of-apologies!

The whole problem is because of the U.S. solution, which was basically a means for America to use Japan as a tool in Asia to boost their own economy. And as a result japan got 50 years as the 2nd largest economy!!!! Not much of a punishment really is it. As it result of effectively benefiting for the past 50 years Japan really can't see any reason to truly feel sorrow for its war history! In contrast, China suffered 50 years of poverty at the hands of communism! ultimately japan has simply continued feeling "superior" to the rest of Asia and the entire world except for America since the recovery of its economy! Germany of course suffered the division of its country by the Berlin Wall for decades! So, to be honest I see japan as an unruly child that still hasn't been taught a lesson for its bad behaviour! Maybe that will come from a war with China in the future as America leaves the region. Who knows!

One important punishment after the war should have been to hang Hirohito and put an end to the royal throne in japan. That would definitely have been japan realise they had done something wrong. 5 years of

If you look at the world history in a bigger picture where the west nations are colonizing the rest and coming to Japan, what you call bad behaviour is only the west's perspective.

Global economics! That's why the west came to Japan, the result? Pearl harbour! Japan just didn't get economics back then! 70 years later and Japan is desperate to be a part of Global economics, as is every country.

Colonisation and wars were an important part of human development. but now we live in an age where we don't agree with wars and presidents go to court over them! Western colonisation is too far back in history for it to effect people so much now. Many people from WWII still remember its horrors and still suffer from those memories.

One important punishment after the war should have been to hang Hirohito and put an end to the royal throne in japan. That would definitely have made japan realise they had done something wrong. 5 years of occupation was far too short. It should have lasted at least a decade or 2 and the British should definitely have been involved, and perhaps the country should have been divided into 2 halfs under the mandate of each. Instead 20 years later Japan was celebrating hosting the Olympics, having the worlds 2nd greatest economy in the world, spoilt people with more money than they could ever have imagined, and being the master of Asia was again! Just in a different way! Pretty simple to see why japan doesn't feel any need to appologize really!

Interested to see how false "Innocent until proven guilty" actually is. Everybody on here pretty much assumes the police got the right man! No one even questions that there could still be a killer on the loose out there!

I want to see the surveillance video. That's pretty much the best evidence, but how good is it? Walking home tonight in the dark I couldn't even tell how many people were in cars until they were right in front of me! Where was this camera? How did it get such a clear shot in the dark? Why haven't they shown it on the TV to put our minds at ease! Street surveillance cameras are usually pretty high up, I find it hard to believe they could get such a clear photo at night. If the car documents were in Gumo's wife's name maybe it was her in the car!

Also, an unregistered boat was found near by! There are probably hundreds of them, surely if gumo was there they would get some sort of fibres or DNA from it! But no mention of any evidence proving a connection!

After that the only real evidence is the sheet and the rope. And they are connected to Gumo because a shop owner remembers selling it to him after the police investigated! WTF, a woman has just been murdered tied in the sheet and rope you sold and you wait for the police to come to you.....are you kidding me! The ROPE and the SHEET! The reality is probably more along the lines. Police go to a shop with a photo of Gumo and eventually someone sais maybe they sold it to him! Did they get the receipt that the shop keeper has to keep by law for tax purposes which will show the time, date and the ROPE and SHEET being sold!

And if the evidence was so strong Gumo would have admitted to the crime already, but he still denies it when the police have a photo of him in a car with the deceased!!!! It doesn't seem that the photo evidence, or any of the evidence is so strong and one sided as the simplified English media makes out!

Gaijin Hunter?

Terrible tragedy in the loss of life. If the couple met through dating sites it is highly probable the victim was a "Gaijin Hunter". If this is true, it's highly probable that she mearly viewed western men as an "expensive handbag" and merely a fashion accessory! Indeed, gaijin hunters often say "I want to marry my western man" but in reality it is simply the same as saying, "look at my new Gucci bag." Mr. Gumo divorced his ex-wife before marrying his current wife about 15 years ago. Almost immediately remarrying to his current wife! It is possible due to differences, he was unhappy and serious about his new girlfriend. Perhaps he mistook his new girlfriend for a "Gaijin Lover", women who are truly interested to marry only foreign men, and had hoped they might marry! This mistake may have been the tragic event that led to this tragic death. Of course, we can only speculate until more facts are presented.
