Maybe they could rent some painted Chow-Chows instead.

At least they found a great date for it :D

And the plot, ... who's lined up for collecting the kickbacks from the helmet vendors?

... we see people with bullet-proof vests get knocked off their feet

Thankfully, bullets in japan are mostly delivered by postal envelopes but such a suitcase may come in handy anyways if somebody would attempt to attack with their 6cm long knife blade.

To those mocking the "bag" guy, ... I think that's a "ballistic suitcase", basically a portable bullet proof shield.

A wild guess: that ABC Radio interview probably said "... we had multiple layers of protection", not "players".

Driving 'n drinking issues are surely something he should have understood at this age.

As was shown on the TV as well, other new "adults" were save while observing Mickey Mouse at some special event. Welcome to adulthood!

"Japan sees no impact" ... on many things sadly.

I'm not an English expert but that spelling looks a bit Engrish to me.

Since it was questioned several times on this page if "Japanese have to quarantine" ... YES, I think so. On July 16th, a Japanese friend who came back from Germany did enter "voluntary isolation required by returnees" before heading to Tokyo. He spent two weeks on some dedicated hotel secured by the government.

Confused by "feline". If I recall correctly, Sanrio stated in the past that "Hello Kitty is not a cat".

Great, that will make their Candy blush and Dragon thingies work much better, I guess.

This person is a great sample of the relics still in place with power and I find it very positive that Japan is exposing them and tearing them apart (which will happen to him soon).

Similar personalities in the school business, insurance and real estate hopefully get instinct too.

Posted in: Ride-hailing firm Grab hits back in Uber takeover row See in context

I never heard of "Grab" before a recent trip to Kuala Lumpur. But it was very convenient to use. Besides knowing the final price of the ride in advance, the cars were much more comfortable than their stock "Budget" taxis. Drivers were very friendly too.

Posted in: Complaints on rise about private detectives' unsatisfactory services See in context

By that description, I'd think it's about these "one-click" fraud sites. They indeed demand horrendous bills (around 99,000 JPY) for a three months contract, that was "automatically activated" by visiting the site.

This stuff is around since more than 10 years in almost unchanged form and hard to shut down because of missing legal basis and lack of engagement by the JP police and other organizations.

Posted in: Honda halts production at Sayama plant after cyberattacks See in context

This stuff is nasty indeed and proper detection by security software can take time, which offers opportunities for infection during that delay.

@bosphorus: If you do a websearch for "linux ransomware", one of the top hits might be from two days ago, mentioning a company that paid 1M USD because of their infected linux systems. The same counts for mac by the way :-D

Posted in: The art of giving and receiving change in Japan See in context

One of the first things I learned when coming to Japan was exactly this - how I should properly hand over paper bills. Face up and facing the other person, "it's manner here", the wifey said. Since then it is "common sense" to me and - mistakes as the one stated above (handling wrong bill) - can never happen to me.

I can pay with closed eyes, 'cause the wallet content is aligned/sorted properly by default :-)

Posted in: Nagasaki man gets back the cash he left at ATM See in context

I experienced both sides of such in Tokyo (Machida). I once found a swollen wallet on top of a public phone inside a department store - handed it to store staff without even looking inside.

And last summer my own wallet fell out of my pocket, only to be found by a kind soul minutes later. It was delivered to a police station and I had it back the next day. Some 50.000 Yen and several other valuable stuff (Yodobashi, Yamada point cards, residence card, drivers license etc.) were all returned without anything missing. That is the Japan I know and would wish it'd be everywhere like that.
