People here prefer to take their own lives them simply quitting a job all because of this stupid "gaman" culture.
It's sad that these people would rather die than stand up for themselves. This gaman culture is toxic.

Posted in: What do you think of Japan’s school education system? See in context
Heavily flawed system. Kids are not taught to think, but to pass a test and make high scores to impress others. Also there is no threat of being thrown out of school, as there is no expulsion. That's probably the worst thing, I have heard horror stories of kids getting into fights everyday and they are still in school because they can't be expended.

Posted in: Why is Japan such an unpopular tourist destination? See in context
It's not necessarily that expensive in Japan, but it is expensive to travel there. Also a major lack of English services in Japan. You ever find a policeman or a worker at the train station who can speak more than rudimentary English? Those train maps are pretty daunting. Also there's a pretty big lack of free wifi in Japan.

Posted in: What’s wrong with English education in Japan? Pull up a chair See in context
Like stated before, the biggest problem I would say is the fact that the Japanese English teachers don't use English for English class... The little English that does come out of their mouths is pronounced wrong, using the katakana phonetics system. They are also always teaching wrong grammar to the students because they are too arrogant to check their own English. So this circle of people who can't speak a single word of correct English continues despite learning it for years in middle and high school.

How were they able to prove that the increase in cancer and the birth defects were caused by their work done in Sendai? Has the number of cancer cases and birth defects also risen in Sendai? We haven't heard anything detailing this(although that information might be quashed). I'm afraid, this is the work of some unscrupulous lawyers looking to make a quick buck, thinking they had an easy mark.
I'm pretty sure they traced it to the cesium-infected seawater that they drank.

Posted in: Ideally, should English teachers at schools in Japan be native speakers? Can non-native English speakers do just as well or better? See in context
There are good and bad teachers on both sides, but I would say overall the native speaker is better. Non-native teachers of English(especially Japanese) tend to use gramatically correct, but rather awkward phrases from time to time.

Posted in: Obesity as a market failure See in context
However don't think that eating fat gets you fat. Much more so, it is eating an excess of simple carbs, including high fructose or fruit sugar that will lead to a cascade of disastrous metabolic effects in your body. The bottom line is that fructose leads to belly fat, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and could result in many types of chronic disease.
Novenachama is correct, it is the overconsumption of carbs that is making people fat. So called "healthy" whole grain bread, rice, fruit etc. etc. is making you fat. Eating a lot of fat is not bad for you. The Ketogenic diet has proved this again and again.
Also it is not true that all Japanese are skinny and healthy. Obesity rates have been rising over the years, and so many of these so called "skinny" people are in reality skinny fat.

Yes Japan is really racist. Like OP said, there's not a lot of blatant racism like the anti-korean marches, but there is A LOT of microagression(I like op's word "innocent racism"), you might not notice it at first but it's there.

Only if they made grades for English or required people to pass it, I imagine they would get some results. Teachers here at Elementary school are also abyssmally unmotivated. Whenever it comes time to team-teach in English, they just F off to a corner in the classroom and start grading papers instead of helping with English.

As a cyclist I would love to ride on the road rather than the sidewalk, but with no bike lanes it's pretty difficult. But the idea of bike lanes also seems impossible, the roads are already narrow enough and it would also require people to stop parking on the side of the road anywhere and everywhere.

I think bestiality is a bit of a stretch. But this does open up a few doors. Seriously, if gay marriage is fine, what makes polygamy so bad? As long as everyone involved is a consenting adult, why not? Prepare for FLDS to mount a legal challenge calling anti polygamy laws religious persecution.
I think it's a bit of a stretch too. Where does he mention bestiality in his speech? I think it's a bit irrelevant.
