Been here for over 30 years... made the decision to stay a long time ago and have not had second thoughts.

Posted in: Japan's population is heading straight down. A nosedive means children being born now will be thrown into a society that becomes distorted, shrinks and loses its ability to function. See in context

So there will be 100% employment, and with the shrinking population, plenty of food available.

Don't forget the planet will also be warmer, lower heating bills, longer growing seasons and more space in general.

A global ban on the production and use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), along with its salts and related compounds, has entered into force for more than 160 countries.

The ban encompasses around 150 PFOA-related substances. It was agreed under the UN's Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and became effective on 3 December for most of the convention's 184 parties.

Japan, which notified the convention secretariat that it is "currently unable to accept the amendment" as its timeline for the ban has been delayed; and

18 countries that have a special agreement with the convention allowing them to "opt-in" to new bans instead of being automatically subjected to them, including Argentina, China, India, South Korea and Russia

Of course the IOC would embrace Russia. The IOC operates on the same principals and ideology as Putin. Just ask Tokyo when they were invaded and forced to have an Olympics against the peoples wishes.

"Spielberg's Oscar-winning thriller told the story of a man-eating great white shark that attacked a U.S. seaside town, prompting a rise in sports fishing across America."

Really? I don't think many sport fishermen would spend the kind of money it takes to pursue the sport to fish for sharks. Marlin, Sailfish and Tuna are the target. Sport fishermen account for a very small percentage of fish taken anyway.

Posted in: Emperor, empress visit Okinawa for 1st time since enthronement See in context

It is sad and amusing what the trolls have to say about Okinawa. I have lived here for over 35 years, both as a member of the military and as a civilian. I too love the ocean, sailing and warm smiling people. The press trots out the same tired line about the military being associated with noise, pollution and crime when they want to cast shade on the US being on Okinawa. The Okinawa politicians keep the focus on the war that happened 70 plus years ago by running a clip of war footage every night on Okinawa TV. It makes you wonder what their agenda really is when the average Okinawan really does not care about the bases, but would like better employment opportunities and education. What you read in the newspapers and hear on TV is a disservice to the Okinawa people. 8 to 10 people protesting at some military gate and some random drunk GI sleeping in some ones yard is not representative of either the Okinawa people or the military. Before someone brings up the referendum vote a couple of years ago, the answer is no, it did not reflect the will of the people. less than half of the population voted and the results of that half was not a landslide. I'm very OK with the US going home if that is what the Okinawa people wants, but it needs to be a debated and informed decision. You do not become governor of Okinawa unless you are antibase, the amount of money poured into this stance makes you wonder where it comes from and who has the most to gain if the Americans leave. The local TV stations and Newspapers all push the same narrative without any opposition. The Okinawa media is like having only Fox News or MSNBC spouting the party line, absolutely no balance. If 10% of the total political energy and money spent on the antibase agenda was spent on solving Okinawa's low employment, substandard schools and failing infrastructure, it would be an improvement over what is trickled down now. Okinawa deserves better!

This is only in seven northern prefectures, though. There will be many more at-risk towns and cities further south.

Absolutely mind boggling how much influence social media has on some people. We check our phones from the time we get up to the time we fall asleep with the thing in our hands and our very lives depend on what Polly Ann and Reggie think about our posts. There needs to be a block feature on these apps............ oh wait...

This is always left out of articles like these, that are just propaganda for the anti-base coalition.

Don't forget the ones that are always trotted out... like the "New Base" that is being built.... which is just an extension of Camp Schwab.... and my favorite... "the noise, pollution and crime associated with the bases"

The overall mind set that you need a train/bus station 2 minuets from your front door and a smattering of stores within walking distance of your dwelling, needs to change. Convert the inefficient patchwork of farms into larger ones that can produce more food, timber and sustainable products. If Japan wants to remain Japanese, it needs to encourage its young people to want to work and live in a non urban setting and provide them monetary incentives to do so. There are millions and millions of people in the world who live in areas where your neighbor is miles away and they thrive. A low head count is no reason not to have utilities and services in an area, the rest of the world does it, but somehow Japan is stuck in the paradigm you need thousands of people living elbow to elbow in order to make things work.

The posters on here seem to think property owners are rich and heartless. If the property owner does not have an income from his/her rental, where does the money for Maintenance, upkeep, taxes and a laundry list of expenses come from? You can bet when a pipe bursts or the toilet clogs, the tenant is on the phone wanting it fixed and the property owner is on the hook to pay. When you can no longer pay, the court/government takes your property and sells it to the highest bidder. You loose permanently but the squatting tenant just moves to another place. When the government bars you from exercising control of your property, they have in effect nationalized it, but still want you to pay tax on it. The British Crown housed troops in the homes of private citizens in American colonies in the 1700s and forced them to provide sustance as well....... this is not much different.

Posted in: Sapporo hopes Tokyo Games success will boost 2030 Winter Olympic bid See in context

You might not like the Olympics but that's not a reason to use them as a scapegoat for covid.

The sharp increase in cases has nothing to do with the Olympics.

I don't think anyone is pushing the idea that the virus is being brought in by the athletes. Go back and read the part about the guy who traveled from Tokyo to Sapporo to watch an event and multiply that by a few hundred thousand, that is the cause of the virus spike. The sheer number of people put in motion by the Olympic event spreads the virus. Athletes, volunteers, contractors, drives, support staff, VIPs, etc. etc. and the list goes on. I read an article yesterday how Symone Biles hired a private gym and hour away from the O village to practice, along with her coaches, medical personnel and staff.

RC is correct, started when people would bite a coin to check if it was gold or not. 24K pure gold is relatively soft. Just note, most gold jewelry that is advertised as 24K is not, it has enough other metal to make it hard enough not to scratch.
