the grandparents were most-likely in charge of the child, might have even passed the snack to the girl to give to her mother.

Old Hawk, you don't make any sense. The fact that you need to carry a hand gun to feel safe in the states tells us all we need to know.

i explained to a few of my high school students the other day, part of the reason I am moving back to my home country after many years in Japan is the culture difference, I fit in in my home country... ie.

in my home country i am:

A father A husband A teacher.

in Japan i am:

A gaijin. A gaijin. A gaijin.

Posted in: Survey among expats: What did you think about Japan before you started living here? See in context

As a kid I didn't think Japan was as well off because of the lyrics in Weird Al's Just Eat It : "...Well, don't you know that other kids are starving in Japan..."

Posted in: Saitama man dies after hospitals reject him 36 times See in context

I live very close to Kuki and have never experienced any problems like this in the hospitals. Poor guy. One thing that my wife commented on (she is an ER nurse in Tokyo) is that clinics and hospitals are full of old people who aren't taking care of themselves or who have very MINOR issues, yet take up much needed space and time for people who actually NEED help.

If we overcome injuries, there is no doubt we can be Champions this year.

the only thing the lakers have a shot at winning is the lottery

Canada has a football league like we do here but i dont think its as huge

This is true, we do have the CFL.. football isn't treated as a religion like it is in some states like Texas, we have other things to live for as well :P though we ARE very passionate about the game of football... many diehard NFL fans in Vancouver, a lot of seahawks and husky fans as well who make trips to the games every year. The CFL is a very exciting game, just 3 downs instead of 4, a bigger field and one extra player aside, so game has more passing, very entertaining, though we just dont have the talent to sell out stadiums... back in the early '90's we had Doug Flutie in BC (and OJ Brigance), the rocket Ismail in Toronto.. over 55k fans were coming out to those games.. give us the product and more people will be interested in it..

Posted in: More Japanese youth wearing surgical masks to hide their face See in context

vast right-wing:

I have asked students to remove their masks in class and they literally start shaking with fear and begin to tear up.

You might want to be a little more sensitive to the culture here. If those kids are sick, it's very rude to take off your mask. Seems like you are putting them in a VERY uncomfortable position, in front of all their peers no less.

to smithinjapan: "barely junior high school.." jr high here is age 12 (grade 7 in n. america). So they look like 11 going on 12 years old to you? ok... to me they look around 16-18. As for people grading them, nothing wrong with people saying what they think is cute, or whatever. Why is it "sick?" Sick is perhaps what you are imagining the scores to be in reference to.

smithinjapan:

The school literally ignored the kid's suffering and instead of addressing the bullying.."

$$ just to play devil's advocate, let's say the school didn't actually witness it occur.. then they would assume the marks on the boys arm were from home, possibly torture from a parent. Maybe they confronted the boy and he said he wouldnt say where they came from. He most likely wouldnt rat out the bullies, would mean even worse torture. So, that leaves us with the parents. They KNEW it wasnt occurring in the home. What did they do about it when their child was alive? (that said, there obviously was a huge problem with a lack of communication by the adults in this situation.. then again, maybe the boy hid his scars at home... anyways, just sayin..and no, I'm def'y not siding with the school in this...)

Posted in: 2 children, aged 4 and 3, die after falling into irrigation canal See in context

I've seen it many times, gaps in the canals where kids could easily sneak under and possibly drown... parents should have been around but even if parents WERE near kids, a kid can sneak under in 5 seconds when a parent is looking away.. gross neglect by the cities to allow this to happen... people not being proactive and sensing possible dangers until AFTER they occur, something so common here. COMMON SENSE

bicultural, i agree with you, though in regulation he DID hit a huge clutch 3 with under 30 seconds left to tie the game, then with the last play he drew a triple team and dished off to haslem who missed the shot and the end of regulation for the win. Morever, you can't blame the player entirely for fouling out, that last call where he was simply backing in on his man and the guy didn't have his feet set and just flopped, a horrible call
