@zichui But considering that Japan of 70ish years ago and Japan of today are indistinguishable, why shouldn't Japan be allowed the same defence abilities as any other normal nation?

Trying to pull off highly dynamic combat operations in a complex hostile foreign environment is going to overwhelm them immediately. Japanese today are too insular, naive and inflexible to even begin to handle the constant twists and turns and instant decision making it would demand.

That statement is so incredibly generalising that it's hard to take the rest of your comment seriously...

Well luckily for them, they won't have to fork out that money because the chances are, I won't see a unified korea in my lifetime.

The economy has gone down the carsie for a number or reasons but one of the big reasons was that stupid tax increase in March.

As much as I criticise the United States over it's global involvement, I would take the good old USA as the world policeman any day over China for instance.

Actually GW, I'm not an American, and to be honest, I don't think he's done too good at all but that said, I'm not too sure the republicans would be better, but these elections just go to show how displeased the people of the US are with the current government.

Posted in: Ukraine leader sees end to war, eyes EU membership by 2020 See in context

The crux of the problem is that Kiev and the west are giving literally no consideration to the people in the east of Ukraine, they have clearly shown over the last few weeks and months that they are not happy with the government but Kiev just calls them terrorists and bombs them. Hardly the kindest way to treat ones so called friends and neighbours. I say let them decide in a referendum if peace really is the ultimate goal.

I can't help but think that by Japan taking sides in the Ukraine issue and imposing ridiculous sanctions on Russia, they've screwed themselves when it comes to the islands.

I don't think we should start laying the blame anywhere until we get the evidence, both Russia, Ukraine and the Rebels have the same missile system so it very well could be any of them so until we see some convincing evidence, we shouldn't point the finger at anyone.

Indeed. Great Britain today is too focused on the European Union rather than the commonwealth and her historical allies, and as such is loosing influence with them.

The UK never should have returned it but then again it was on a lease. I think they should have just put it up for a referendum, to remain an Overseas Territory or to leave. Maybe if the pro democracy protests get serious enough, the United Kingdom would come to their aid and we'd be united once more.

HK was better off under British rule, rather then being handed back over in 97, they should've been offered a choice, remain an Overseas Territory or to join China.
