Not saying that is the case here, but I always wonder about domestic violence in such cases. The topic of domestic violence is so often ignored, especially when it comes with little or no physical violence. The emotional abuse is often far worse for the mind and soul of the person. And don't "why didn't she leave" me. Unless you have been there or taken time to understand it, you may not know or understand that there is no just walking out the door to happily ever after.
