Three years. The time it took for Japan to modernize from the onset of the Meiji era would have been quicker than the time it takes for the Fukushima Problem to be resolved.

Why is North Korea allowed at any UN function? If they want to participate within the international community, they need to act like a member of the international community.

If the nuclear power plants were running then not so much fossil fuels would had to have been burned. Wonder if Japan will have the infrastructure in 2020 to power households across the country at that time.

Please don't let AKB48 or any of those stupid girl bands do any performances at the Olympic games. It will certainly be tragic.

Japan and South Korea should be cooperating more on issues instead of pointing the finger at each other for every little remark some politician makes. Both nations should be proud of how far they have come since the end of World War II. Let's focus on that and see how much further the two nations can come.

Actually, what is more amazing is that there is never any footage from beginning to end of these "crimes at sea" Come on Eco-shepherd! Show us the proof! I want to see harpoons being launched at you! If someone can show me an un-cut, full footage of interactions between the vessels I would be delighted. Until I see that, and it shows the Japanese attacking the Eco weasels, then I will side with the whaling ships.

Where in his home did he have room for 2,700-odd packages? He must either live out of the city limits or is keeping busy in the city doing something that pays a lot more than delivering packages.

Posted in: Five Japanese customs even some Japanese people think are a pain See in context

How about the custom of individually wrapping everything, wrapping everything regardless if fragile or not in bubble wrap, the butting newspaper around it, wrapping nice wrapping paper around, and then putting the product into a paper bag, then a plastic bag. An over-exaggeration but for all of the steps they go through to "be green" and follow the 4 Rs you'd think there would be some changes in those customs. Heck, an international environmental treaty was signed right here in Japan - Kyoto Protocol. Do you Kyoto? Not so much.

ReformedBasher MAR. 03, 2014 - 09:30AM JST Pardon my ignorance - are tremors common in the Ryukyus? Are buildings there built to resist earthquakes?

I know that many of the buildings are full on concrete to withstand the typhoons that blow through the island chain. I don't know how well those same buildings would hold up against Earthquakes however.

Glad to see these students going abroad and gaining some life experience. Volunteering is always good. They should try connecting to the Tomodachi Initiative for support. I am a little confused however by the name of the group "Japan Love Project" But good on them for helping out.

“I want to see nuclear power abolished,” Akira Ibi, a 70-year-old Yaizu citizen, told the Jiji Press news agency, adding he also wanted to get rid of a nearby nuclear power plant on the Pacific coast.

Let's burn fossil fuels instead! and import everything Japan needs for energy consumption, putting aside Japanese energy security concerns.

Posted in: There’s propaganda to depict Japan in a way that’s far from the truth. There is danger emerging, where such propaganda will have a huge influence on our children’s generation. I would like to think of See in context

Put the focus on the past 60 years of history. Focus on the way Japan rebuilt itself after the war. Focus on the way Japan has been a peaceful nation during that same time. Show how Japan has done a 180 from how it was in the beginning of the 20th century. These are aspects of Japan that others should see.

Posted in: Do you think suicide is an honorable way to atone for a crime or scandal? See in context

community service is better. There are several places here in Japan that could benefit from a good chain gang to clean up. If the taxpayers are going to provide food and board for prisoners, they should get their money worth. If the prisoner thinks he is above cleaning parks and performing other public services, let him off himself.
