Hachi the stray is actually a fairly popular rumor you hear from young locals time to time tho (if you spend any time with them). But it's only a rumor and the fact remains that 1) He indeed did show up in the morning and evening every day. 2) And his appearance matches the time professor commuted to and from work. 3) And this was his daily task years before becoming famous through news (people started giving treats only after this). So it's easily disproved.

I don't see the value in precious stones or expensive wedding rings. Maybe some are just that shallow and the only way they feel a man loves them is through something extravagant like that. It should be the thought that counts.

The ladders were used to spot the location of the fire. And firefighters back then didn’t have any hoses so they basically sledgehammered all the neighboring houses to stop fire from spreading..

Apparently the glasses were put there after several incidents of attempted attacks using slingshots and fireworks by some unpatriotic person. I'm sure the imperial family trusts their own people but imperial guards had to install the glasses for security reasons. It's really the only way to be safe.

I agree with semperfi. Monarchy is such an irrelevant state institution. A directly elected prime minister or a presidential system would be more meaningful today.

Unemployment in Japan is still only about 5%; United States 10%; most of euro area except for Germany is 10-20%. No trash piling up on streets, crime-rate at a record-low, and you don’t see people lining up to receive rations. I think the situation in Japan is still pretty mild compared to what some other countries are going through.
