Japanese and Korean teams start training camps much earlier than MLB teams. Don't the Kyojin head to Okinawa in January? This means their players are further along in conditioning and exposed to baseball activities. If you haven't seen a 90 mph fastball all winter (approx. 4 months) it will take a while to adjust. I just watched an interview clip of a MLB pitcher making note that they have been throwing for several weeks in preparation for Spring Training where as position players who just arrived at the start of camp this past weekend have to face them in live BP and are usually outmatched.

Plus, why in the hell did they choose to go up to SF and play the championship instead of staying in So. Cal? It's going to be freezing in frisco and more opportunity for injuries. Aside from the fact that I now live in LA and was in Japan for the previous WBC's. Go Dodgers!!!

Posted in: Japan declined U.S. offer to station nuclear experts in Kan's office: Edano See in context

Zichi, is there evidence that the actual earthquake caused the nuclear disaster? From my understanding, the tsunami crippled the back up generators which allowed for the overheating. Would there have been a crisis if the generators were safe and operated as intended? Now if GE designed the underground location as a result of protection from tornadoes I think there may be an argument for your point of view. But just as easily one can come back and say that Tepco had 40 years to re-locate those generators to a safe location. Did they not increase the sea wall in that same time frame? If there is any information that points otherwise I would love to be directed to it. I'm just thinking out loud here.

Posted in: Japan declined U.S. offer to station nuclear experts in Kan's office: Edano See in context

Zichi, I think you may be misguided on some of your targeting of the GE designed reactors. From what I recall, the reactors in general were not overly damaged from the quake itself (please correct me with evidence if I'm mistaken). What caused the nuclear disaster was the location of back-up generators in an area where they were affected by the tidal wave that hit the plant. I believe the structures surrounding the reactors were in decent shape until the events caused by lack of cooling. Granted, the overall design is old and flawed but with proper cooling should there have been any different operation than that just days before 3/11? I thought it was universally agreed that the knocking out of back up power was the main issue. How many other nuclear reactors in the region experienced catastrophic disaster that were not directly located in the path of the tsunami?

And let's be quite honest. The US was not offering to send their experts to Tokyo to heroically save the day. They wanted people on the ground who would provide accurate information direct to Washington. Because one would have to be a complete fool to continue to "trust" the DPJ government.

Like the previous US President famously said, "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice.... errrr....."

Voice - I think you have the Hatoyama period wrong in the sense that he had no idea how to implement his promises and desires to separate Japan and the U.S. That was the main factor with his term as PM. There is no problem with saying "no" but you damn well sure better have an answer other than "no". Hatoyama had zero answers.

Sailwind - GW Bush went to best of schools his whole life and as a result of his family ties later went on to become President. I doubt that anyone will argue with me that he is a blubbering idiot. It was his family's access and his family's connections that presented the opportunities he had. Oh and how he got to avoid serving in Vietnam by staying cozy back stateside with the Air National Guard. If he wasn't a "Bush" he would have likely been in the swamps of SE Asia with an M-16 and a drug problem. Since he is a "Bush" he still had a drug problem but ended up being the most powerful man in the free world. I guess he did get to fight in a couple of wars but from the absolute safety of a room in the shape of an oval.

Interesting take paulinusa. Didn't think to look at it that way. I thought the Gints just did an excellent job on their blocking assignments. In my opinion, Bradshaw looked like he was trying to stop himself at the goal line to keep the clock running until someone tackled him (across the line of course). His momentum carried him into the endzone.

Cletus - "an personally with Japan's imperialistic warmongering background they should be the last nation to get the bomb"

Would you care to elaborate on who held warmongering and imperialistic ambitions first?? Do you suppose that Japan's motivations for expansion along with the use of liberal amounts of brutality in the first part of the 20th century had anything to do with the country (and the states it claimed suzerainty over) that had attempted on two occasions to destroy and subjugate it? I agree with your reference to background, just not with how far back in history you decide to reflect on. A vicious cycle.

And back in the NLCS when the Phillies were head hunting, Kuroda stepped up and brushed back their hitters. He gained a ton of cred in the clubhouse after that outing. First year in the Majors I believe as well. No fear for the Samurai.

When Kuroda is on he's very tough to beat. If he's off that day for some reason (very rare) then it's an early shower for him. I loved how he pitched for my Dodgers. Just wish we could have given him just a tiny bit more run support and he would have had very nice numbers to accompany the type of pitcher he is. True professional. Solid innings eater and very good command. As much as I loathe the Yankees I wish Kuroda the best.

You want to know how the Conservatives plan on "investing" in America? Starting a new war. As Marine Corp. General Smedly Butler stated "War is a Racket". Bush used war(s) to bring his sagging economic numbers up and show immense growth for the economy. Most of that growth was centered around the Military Industrial Complex (something General/President Eisenhower warned about). Defense related companies like Halliburton (VP Cheney) and several others (including big oil) generated huge profits but didn't put much back into the country. We've been at war for 10 years now. You think the Obama administration can invade a country to boost the economy?

Anyone remember Irabu? Might give some insight into why Igawa is toiling in the minors. The Yankees expect you to perform for the big bucks. If not, they have a decent minor league system and have no qualms about replacing you. Big contracts don't mean that much to them because they make gobs of cash. As it pains me to stick up for Cashman, the Steinbrenners and the evil empire, Igawa did not impress anyone during his time in the bigs. Go Dodgers and Kuroda!

NK is just playing their usual games. They need to start pretending to come to the table so they can receive food and fuel aid for the next winter. Once the rice and oil has been delivered they will resort to provocations to reinforce the change in leadership from Douchebag Jr. to his favored douchebag son. Remember, people in NK have zero information on how NK is heading to New York talking peace treaty. The military will claim that they forced the West into giving up food/fuel for fear of a NK nuclear attack. F*@k em.
