Posted in: Sea Shepherd, whaling protester Watson take their feud public in NZ See in context

This sentence should help to open eyes to how Watson and his bunch of morons lie to gain publicity:

Sea Shepherd announced during Bethune’s trial it would not let him participate in further protests, but after his release said the ban was a tactic to help him avoid prison and that he was free to rejoin.

Watson will do/say anything to keep his ugly mug in the spotlight.

Hahaha! Hilarious. It's obvious Watson is a douche. I mean, he is basing his whole argument on an edited piece of film that captures Capt. (I'm going to board your boat, demand you pay for the ship and further demand you take me to safe harbor) Berthune saying that ‘yes, I guess we’re going to have to let it go,’. This is probably after Watson ordered the ship scuttled. I love these knuckleheads.

Ha! Trap the monkey inside your house and watch as he does way more than 200,000 yen damage. That new big ass flat screen TV you bought, the one with 3D glasses? Yep, smashed. The big fridge? The interior shelves are trashed. Not to mention all the food that will be eaten/ruined. Pss and Sht on the carpets. Claw marks on the walls. Then really feel like junk when the lil bugger busts open a window and crawls right out. Great idea!!

fds, in most cases the punishment meted out by the US military is much harsher than what the Japanese law can dish out. In most cases a suspended sentence in Japan. Look at the idiot Ady Gil captain, Greenpeace activists, J teachers, J police officers and nearly every SDF member who gets popped. The only exception seems to be when the violator wears a US uniform, that's why there is SOFA.

The Frenchies screwed me out of a Linkin Park concert (no security or cleaning crews) and also meeting some people in Madrid to receive the keys to a beach side villa that I had sole use for the weekend. Train to Madrid was canceled and I had to bribe my way into sleeping in some spare office of a hotel/inn for the night. Damn, I still get upset over that incident.

I remember this happening to me when I visited Paris about 7 years ago. I thought they figured it out then. But, I think we've come to learn that the French love to strike.

Gurukun- again, back up your statements on the economic results of closing US bases in Okinawa or withdraw them as simple conjecture.

Gurukun, I look forward to when you produce evidence to back up your claims.

Please enlighten me as to the businesses that are currently located there. They wouldn't by chance be headquartered in Tokyo or another Japanese city would they? Would those revenues find their way back to Okinawa after being sent to the big wigs sitting in plush offices at the top of a skyscraper? Is Jusco an Okinawa based company?

Gurukun - It appears the only one hiding behind a "curtain" is you. Your claim that the area that has replaced Makimoto provides more jobs and generates more money than Kadena AB is something you are shying away from. Put up the facts to back up your statement or withdraw it. You focus on US housing (Makimoto) and recreational (Ayase GC) areas to compare jobs and revenue created by a retail(?) outlet for residents of Okinawan. I would like to see you compare their wages to those of tenured JPN National employees on base. Even newly hired JPN Nationals on base. Just because there are a lot of people working for minimal wages doesn't mean they are making more money than those working on base.

You are assuming things that you are only guessing about as am I. That should not be confused with common sense.

Gurukun- I think you have an interesting argument for Shintoshin. Can you provide data to reinforce your claim that it provides more jobs and generates more money than KAB? I don't live in Okinawa so I appreciate any "confirmed" details you can provide. Cheers

Gurukun - Base Housing is one thing. There aren't that many employment positions for a location like that. It's mainly housing for the base population. Consider the amount of positions on a functioning military installation that requires all aspects of operations and relies strongly on national staff. I think your reference to the amount of jobs/money generated now in comparison to when Makimoto was in use is not appropriate.

Posted in: Tokyo beats Hawaii to take Little League World Series title See in context

Kreza- How many LL teams are there in Curacao or Chinese Taipei? Granted Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka will have proportionally larger numbers of teams fighting for the right to represent Japan but how many inaka prefectures are there where the number of LL's are much lower? Thus making their route to a national championship and a ticket to the LLWS that much easier? Baseball is America's national sport. LL's are everywhere in every state, including Alaska (they get to play a lot of baseball up there due to the extra sunlight in summer). My point is that there is a lot more baseball being played in the US and usually at very high levels. That's why we have a separate tourney and get an automatic birth in the LLWS championship game.

Congrats to the Japan team for their victory and also to the US team for such sportsmanship in defeat.

redsox- it's true the US automatically takes one of the slots in the World Championship but you must understand the amount of baseball it takes to get there. Months of tournament play against a much larger group of talented little league teams. In my day we were eliminated from the So. Cal regionals (the next year my buddys made it to the final and lost to Mexico, I think. Northridge Earthquake Kids)and we had played quite a few games just to get there from our local tourneys. Then you get state regionals, state championship, regionals and THEN you get a ticket to Penn. to play the best in the country before facing the international champs. No discredit to Japan but countries like Japan, SK, Curacao and other Latin American countries definitely do not have it as tough to get in.

runner3- 8 teams from US play in the US tournament and international teams play in the international tourney. US also has teams from US military installations in Europe, Asia and other places that take part as well. I saw Ramstein, AB, Germany in the final rounds of the US tourney.

Anyways, congrats Waipahu and Tokyo for the great effort! Gotta love baseball!

mrmiyagi- A leadoff hitter's sole responsibility is to get on base for the rbi producers in the 2-5 slots. At 200 hits a season, that means he is on base a minimum of 200 times (not counting walks). Batters can watch the pitcher warming up and while they're on deck.

Ichiro/Furcal 1 and 2 in the line up would be scary. Especially the way Furky is playing this year. Both All-Stars. Dodgers have 4 this year.

That would leave SEA with a feared hitter (he might not have the power numbers this year but pitchers still respect him) for the remainder of the season and a possible DH next year if they want to keep him plus a prospect or two.

Ichiro should be traded to the LA Dodgers. Great Japanese connection with Nomo, Saito, Ishii, Nakamura (though he flopped as a power hitting 3B in the Bigs) and currently Kuroda. Big J-community. We have one of the only J-towns in the U.S., Little Tokyo.

We'll trade Manny and his 1 year $20 some mil. contract plus a decent minor leager or 2 with some possible potential in return for Ichiro waiving his remaining 9 1/2 years left on his contract (I mean really, 10 years is ludicrous. For a star in his early 20's maybe, and they have to be Babe Ruth/Sandy Koufax good but who can tell that young?), and re-negotiating for a 5 year deal max. Ichiro is amazing, don't get me wrong. HOF'er for sure. 10 years is just too much of a commitment for a player already in his 30's.

Posted in: What do you think of the word "hafu," the Japanese term used to describe anyone who is half-Japanese? See in context

yasukuni- no, you are not understanding my point correctly. Afican Americans began using the term as a method to disallow non African Americans from continuing to use the derogatory term. The fact they use it amongst themselves now does not negate the racist origins when used by non African Americans then or now. It is still a very loaded word. What part of that was not clear?

Also, have you read in my posts where I am not in conflict with the term "hafu"?? I've used it my entire life.

My issue is that people fail to recognize the origin of the word. It may be less derogatory in 2010. Fine. But, seriously think of why the word was adopted in the first place? I think it's OK that people don't have a problem with using the word. Use it till the cows come home for all I care. Context is one thing. Just don't deny the origin of the term.

Posted in: What do you think of the word "hafu," the Japanese term used to describe anyone who is half-Japanese? See in context

Let me also re-iterate. In most cases the word "hafu" is not an issue to me. Maybe it's just the gaijins w/ no Japanese ancestry on this thread who feel that they know what is right when not walking in the shoes of the people they are commenting about. And having a child with a Japanese spouse doesn't make you an expert. I trust your children are beautiful and precious, but you are just an observer/commentator in my opinion.

Is it only those that have experienced it in Japan that can truly understand?

Posted in: What do you think of the word "hafu," the Japanese term used to describe anyone who is half-Japanese? See in context

yasukuni- you say that words are borrowed and lose their meaning over time. Let's take the word n*gger for example. While it has become socially acceptable in America for African-Americans to use the term amongst themselves, should a non African-American use the word it still holds every single ounce of spite in other people's eyes, regardless of race. Just because the term has been used for a period of time does not subtract from the original intention.

Japan considers itself to be a completely homogeneous society. When the term "hafu" was deemed necessary/useful, it was in a context of "you are not fully Japanese and this is how we will differentiate you from us". This also applies to mixed races as Japanese again mistakenly consider themselves to be pure. The fact that there are multitudes more "hafu's" around does not change this. The origin of the term, however innocent or "just a simple translation of half or mixed" people deem it to be on this thread is quite honestly irrelevant.

It is what it is.
