@Kaynide. Ok, thank you for responding. I am in western Chiba, so that size of property would put me back quite a lot. For me, in my area, a condo may be better, as it is cheaper, easier to maintain, and the walls tend to be really thick.

Sounds like you have a nice place though. Good on you

Well, what you are saying that the Sogo Shosha are doing, is something that died out in the early 1970s(even old trading houses like Jardine Matheson had to get out of the middleman business back then). They are not middlemen, but future traders, and also they are owners of production. Such as mines, fisheries, and oil wells. To think that by them just buying up all futures, and forcing Japanese companies to buy from them, is incredibly outdated.

I don't think you understand what you are typing. So, the Japanese Soga Shosas are either, making it impossible for other companies to sell commodities. Or they own the sources and are selling the commodities at market prices. How is that a bad thing? As most, make serious profits when commodity profits don't fluctuate. Now that they are, the Soga are in trouble. But that is on them

Kaynide, 3-4 meters? Wow, Would love that. I am in Chiba, and honestly there is maybe a meter between homes. I am thinking of buying a condo, as with the thicker walls, makes for a quieter experience imho. Also, why own a house, when all you get for a yard is a driveway?

People need to stop being selfish, and be reasonable when dealing with conflict.

Would you mind actually explaining how and why you have these opinions Jerseyboy? Trading companies are more less future markets, but are an actual company. It is hard for most companies to buy commodities/resources in foreign countries and have them shipped to a different location for processing/mnfg. If Soga Shosha were not needed, non-Japanese companies would simply not use them.

Had no idea JT owned Roots.

I think Japan is lucky to have so many different drink companies. The US has Coke, Pepsi, and Dr Pepper, the fourth being so much smaller, that it maybe has 1% of the market. Which leads to a more bland product line up. With the vending machines and more convenience stores, it makes it so that smaller guys can survive here.

You have the above mentioned Coke and Suntory leaders, followed by Asahi and Kirin, as the bigger names. Then Itoen, and the other ~2% market share companies DyDo, Pokka Sapporo and Roots.

I hope they sell. As I would like to keep some of the interesting dynamics in the drink business. Heck Japan gave us the pancake drink by Morninaga I believe

A good company to own imho. I am looking at it, Unicharm and Hitachi.

Toyota also offers exposure to Fuji Heavy, Hino, and Daihatsu. Plus like 6-7% of Isuzu IIRC

They need auditors to come in and find people working off the clock. WHen that happens, huge fines. They did it in the US, and unpaid OT is pretty rare. This is a case, where they need to enforce the basic rules, otherwise everything else is just fluff.

WHat is stopping people from coming to work on their day off?

TVs, being exposed to TVs and other commodity consumer electronics is bad for business. Power systems, people movers, and auto parts are profitable. Look at Toshiba, Panasonic, and Hitachi, compared to Sony, Sharp and NEC

Posted in: Panasonic profit plunges 42% See in context

Sign. Panasonic, Toshiba, and Hitachi are all doing well(fantastically so). Why? They got away from consumer electronics(mainly TVs, cameras and the such). Sony and Sharp are still heavily exposed to consumer electronics and are still struggling. Hitachi is no longer going to make TVs, and their profits have been up, and doing great for the past few years. NEC just got out of the cell phone market, and are just now getting back into the black.

TVs are basically a commodity product now. Which is why Hitachi gets a huge amount of it's profits from power generation, people movers ie elevators and escalators, and auto parts.

People here could use reading a business report before posting. Staying informed goes a long way.

bass4funk, good question. I feel that the panic and shock were the wrong reactions. Even the govt seemed shaken by the situation. I would say being more level headed, would have made a better impression. Japanese are seen as easy bait for kidnappers, as per the Japan Times. The govt could make it harder for people to get away with this. I don't think Goto could have been saved, but I think future kidnappings can be avoided via the proper responses

Gary, the planes are scheduled to be delivered in 2022. They do not pay for them up front. Thus, the Cap Ex spending will not come out of this year's fiscal budget.

As for the sustainability of Japanese airlines. I agree that the fewer and poorer Japanese will not be able to sustain it. Though, like other industries, the airlines can differentiate themselves with service. I hate flying on US based airlines, as the service is terrible.

Also, your railing against Abenomics is rather silly. The airlines almost went bankrupt in 08-09, which led to salary reductions. The airlines can not be expected to raise salaries immediately. Abenomics is not as terrible as this site makes you think. I think most people who dislike it, are the ones who came here 5-7 years ago, with the incredibly strong yen. Now that is over, people are just mad.

JWithers, well said. I too agree that Abe and the govt bungled this. Though in their defense they have little experience in these dealings.

As a resident of Japan, I have to say that people here, for the most part have no idea how and why Japan is so peaceful now days. Japan gets to enjoy a great deal of peace directly through US military protection. This is a case where the Japanese are really in a bubble, and have no idea how the rest of the world is. I would like there to be a peaceful world, but that is not how it is

Yeah, making TVs is commodity business now. Not worth the cap ex to stay in that field. Power gen, and all the other stuff Toshiba is into is worth concentrating on. Good for them, you have to evolve, or you die. Look at Fuji film vs Kodak as an example

Posted in: Starbucks CEO gets 24% pay hike See in context

Actually, compared to Coke's and GE's CEOs, this isn't exuberant. Schultz turned around SBUX when it was doing poorly in 08-09. So, though high, he is earning his money. To be fair SBUX does pay their employees OKish.

Also, the raise is based upon the stock's valuation increasing. Not as straight forward as you think.

Anyhow, Costco's CEo is awesome. Guy only makes $500k, and keeps his worker's wages high.

Bertie, but also in that regard, Tokyo is not only the biggest, but it also has far too much industry there.

I wish I could find something in Okinawa. My wife is a nurse, and jobs there pay pretty much nothing. But same goes with most of rural Japan. Tohoku is pretty easy to live $ wise.

Haha thank you Bertie. Yes, unfortunately Abe is indebted to some serious interest groups, including developers. It is too bad, as I said Tokyo's fertility rate is way too low, on top of it basically scalping young people from the rest of Japan. It is a blackhole for talent.

He would get a lot of rural votes9which are weighted very heavily), as well as the smaller city votes. On top of making sure that Japan is more prepared for another Kanto quake. 3/11 was bad for Japan, and Miyagi doesn't have much in the way of factories/banks. Imagine if this happens in Kanto. No way can Kansai keep Japan inc running.

Send the jobs to rural areas, and the rural areas may actually become viable. Give tax credits to new companies and the such, and you could see people not all just piling into Tokyo. That said, my family is looking to exit Kanto. Too bad like 80% of all English teaching jobs are here.

Lucabrasi, how is that sexist? I can't physically stop them from going, but I could dissuade them. You could be a little less silly with your accusations. Also, my daughter being a minor, I have the legal right to decide.

For all; I have recently seen some serious rape accusations in my gym in the US. Things are not as safe as you think/would want them to be, Seriously, women need to be careful everyday, and that is a shame. But rape culture is alive and well throughout the world. Though it is reigning in the Middle East and Southern Asia

That said, she was missing for a month. If she didn't escape would anyone have gone looking for her? Really India, you have so much to be ashamed for. I'd never visit there, nor would I let any female family member go there. Not just unescorted, but not let them go at all

Japan really needs to divest from Tokyo. Given that a quake can happen here at any time, the offices and some aof the manufacturing here needs to be send else where in Japan. Tokyo is a black hole, it sucks up all the young people, and has a low birthrate. If I were Abe, I'd give tax incentives to move offices and factories outside of Kanto, an would move a significant amount of Federal jobs to smaller cities such as Yamagata, Sapporo, Hiroshima, and Gifu.

Kaerimashita, I agree. Though it is sad, the regional and small time banks are dinosaurs. Mid sized ones like 777 or whatever it is in the North, and Chiba bank, will be Ok, but those little guys, no hope. Unless they, combine and make their own large bank, with foreign exposure, they have no chance at anything real
