Posted in: British people urged to swear allegiance to King Charles III at his coronation See in context

The tone of this article is not quite correct.

The 'calling upon' the people to swear allegiance is purely an optional matter and most will chose to disregard it. There are no terror squads of executioners lurking in the shadows waiting to despatch anyone with the temerity not to comply!

Most here will remain respectful of the Sovereign as we were to our sadly missed Queen but our loyalty to her was based on appreciation for her tireless efforts over decades - who would want to have their life mapped out for them in such an intense way?

That said, Charles has a very tough act to follow and is starting his new job at the age when most of us have been retired for years…….

This is a great credit to the people of Japan.

Alas, here in the UK, honesty has become fairly unfashionable, but a few of us older generation are still proud to do the decent thing.

Posted in: As yen tumbles, gadget-loving Japan goes for secondhand iPhones See in context

Here in the UK, the basic iPhone 14 starts at ¥141,420.

I share others views that there are a lot of really good phones out there made by other maufacturers and operate on a more User-friendly platform. I used to have an iPhone but moved away to Samsung and will never return to the often very arrogant Apple company.

Posted in: Japan bids farewell to Abe at funeral in Tokyo See in context

This is a tragedy beyond words, for both the family and for Japan.

RIP Abe-san.

[Why so many persons taking photos? Surely it is important to embrace the spiritual aspect of the sad event?]

Posted in: U.S. urges Japan to pay more for hosting American troops See in context

Out of the two countries, who really [really] needs the US to be based in Japan?

I think the US are the desperate ones and their audacity is legendary. Japan should sit tight and refuse to pay more.

I speak as a Brit from a country that 'enjoys' a 'Special Relationship' with the World's Policemen, which at best is totally one-sided.

Be tough, Japan!

Posted in: Suga says he has never put Olympics first and that IOC has final say See in context

This is appalling! I thought Suga is supposed to be 'running the country' [ allegedly....] not the IOC.

This madness must be postponed for another year at least, until the nation is back to normal.

The lives, welfare and well-being of everyone is more important than a minority of sports enthusiasts and commercial beneficiaries.
