What a stupid comment! Get you head out of the sand and understand that Japan has no real system of justice. Part of the proper democratic way of governing us that all are regarded as INNOCENT until proven guilty.

Japan is a nation of people who are unable to take responsibility for themselves, hence the need for a guarantor for everything - even if you're 85 years old. Responsibility is never assigned to an individual alone, so when there's a crime, vehicle crash etc. There is always a percentage of blame assign to each party. It is why the idiot police in Japan often say to women who've been assaulted "well, you must've done something to make the guy attack you!"

It is a shame that Japan does not like to look at its terrible problems a fix them. It would much prefer to pretend it didn't happen.

This Judge has no idea of the Japanese legal system (which is travesty in the legal world). Here are the facts: Ghosn can not get a fair trial in Japan (no body can). He is the scapegoat for corrupt Nissan board members who are jealous of the man's success. Extraditing the Taylors to Japan will mean more injustice in a flawed legal system.

This judge should allow these guys out on bail. They are being incarcerated for an extended period without a trial and that is illegal. Extraditing them to Japan will guarantee an UNfair prejudged trial and incarceration in Japan.

Hey @tooheysnew. Seriously. EVERYONE is affected by a lockdown. But it is necessary whatever the cost! Would you rather be dead? Yes. You may loose your job and it will get tough. But if you live in Japan for the long term, there is social security and other support. You will need to tighten your belt and live frugally during the lockdown. And if you're one of those people passing through on the "Asian Tour", teaching English or whatever, this may be the time to leave and go home. What is not appreciated is the thoughtless, "all about me, all about the money" position that ABE (and apparently you) espouse. Grow up and be a team player!

In most countries Permanent Resident means exactly that! It is someone who is granted permission to live as though a citizen of that country with minor restrictions, such as not being able to vote, run for office, work in the military or intelligence etc. I understand some countries (Australia) no longer regards the permanent in PR as PERMANENT, but Japan's policy on this is inhumane. PR and long term visa holders etc. should be treated the same as Japanese citizens.

The policy is discriminatory has torn families apart and Japan must be shamed into changing this immediately.

As for the rest. With appropriate screening and mandatory lockdown, it is workable. An international teacher is NOT the highest priority in this scenario.

I don't disagree with you. However, the constant, overly focused attention on past wartime aggression is not the pathway to peace. ANZAC DAY in Australia is about remembering fallen soldiers on ALL sides of a conflict. We move on because it leads to healing and peace. But we always end the remembrance services with the words "Lest We Forget".

In modern times, for every family who lost someone in Iraq or Afghanistan, there is a family in both of those places that also lost someone. Their loss is the same as ours, irrespective of the politics of the day.

And for Korea, the forced prostitution of women by the Japanese is still sensitive (Let's stop using the phrase "Comfort Women" and call it what it was). However it really is time to stop pushing Japan for more apologies and money. That's been taken care of (more than once) and it really is way past time to move on - with the caveat (Lest We Forget).

And an apology for a great crime is not just a one off formulation of words, but needs to be accompanied by a genuine sense of remorse - Japan has never given anyone the sense that there is a collective sense of remorse in the way that there was in Germany, for example.

You don't have children, do you? This is how it goes: after someone does the wrong thing, they get found out, they are shown the error of their ways, there is guilt/remorse, then there is apology/reparations, then forgiveness, then it's forgotten.

Remembering past errors are always a good reminder not to return there but it's best to move on as per my earlier comment.

And there will never be a collective anything from Japan because it's wartime aggression is NOT taught. Any reference to it has been removed from text books which, in the Japanese mind, means it didn't happen. That's not right, I know. But that will never change. Best to move on.

And no good to compare with Germany because they are a mature people, able to learn from past mistakes and grow from the process. The Japanese are a socially backward, immature people, who believe if you hide the facts, then it didn't happen. Maybe this will change over time as Japan becomes a more international multicultural society...

There should be arguments for and against, consideration of research, pier reviewed data published, before any public announcements. Social media speculation by lay-people will always be there.
