It's called ACTING people. This is not the same as black-face minstrel shows from yester-year.

It's her gig and she can do what she wants! The real question is about the outcome. I want to see terrific acting, make up, costumes etc. The angle of "through women's eyes" could be very interesting.

If Russell Crowe can play the role of a Roman Gladiator convincingly, why not an this actor playing the African Queen?

@kwatt

It sounds like gaijin flee the Japan's justice whenever they committed crimes here.

What a stupid comment! Get you head out of the sand and understand that Japan has no real system of justice. Part of the proper democratic way of governing us that all are regarded as INNOCENT until proven guilty.

Japan is a nation of people who are unable to take responsibility for themselves, hence the need for a guarantor for everything - even if you're 85 years old. Responsibility is never assigned to an individual alone, so when there's a crime, vehicle crash etc. There is always a percentage of blame assign to each party. It is why the idiot police in Japan often say to women who've been assaulted "well, you must've done something to make the guy attack you!"

It is a shame that Japan does not like to look at its terrible problems a fix them. It would much prefer to pretend it didn't happen.

Gaijin and proper thinking Japanese people take whatever action is required that falls in line with international conventions (Hague), to which Japan is a signatory but does not actually follow.

当たり前だろ?!

Let's be clear: Ghosn is NOT a criminal. He has been stitched up by a ridiculous system in which you are required FORECAST your NEXT financial year's earnings to the tax office - and pay tax on future income. It's like predicting the weather. And things can suddenly change.

Then you have the age-old Japanese, small-minded jealousy issue and typical racist stance against foreigners who become "too successful", thus highlighting the ineptitude of the Japanese.

If you are ACCUSED of a crime in Japan, you are guilty of that crime unless you can prove otherwise. I know this from first-hand experience!

Ghosn is a hero for what he contributed to the mismanaged, financially failing automobile industry in Japan. So happy to see this documentary and mini-series taking shape - yet another well-deserved raised middle finger to this backwards, island-mentality-led country!

Mr Kipling

Agree with you. But remember you may tell and scream at an idiot in Japan but you may not touch them. It is the law! You can go full Yakuza and get right up in their faces but no physical contact. If they touch you, though call 110 and report to the police that you've been assaulted.

But getting to the back to the point: I am flabbergasted by these tin-foil hat-wearing conspiracy theorist cult members who believe Covid-19 was manufactured by the Chinese and delivered through the 5G network. 5G is not even up and running yet!

This Judge has no idea of the Japanese legal system (which is travesty in the legal world). Here are the facts: Ghosn can not get a fair trial in Japan (no body can). He is the scapegoat for corrupt Nissan board members who are jealous of the man's success. Extraditing the Taylors to Japan will mean more injustice in a flawed legal system.

This judge should allow these guys out on bail. They are being incarcerated for an extended period without a trial and that is illegal. Extraditing them to Japan will guarantee an UNfair prejudged trial and incarceration in Japan.

@Mr Kipling Really?! China is an oppressive Communist regime with a world domination strategy by any and all means possible. Huawei is another example of efforts towards that end. Companies backed my the Chinese regime should be blocked from participation on the word business stage for exactly the reasons outlined in this story.

And let's not get started on human rights! China has gone backwards in the last 50 years in this area.

The world needs to pull away from China as soon as possible before it's too late.

Oh my Buddha! Will this money-centric country ever wake up?! Stop wasting time inventing ways to get people to go out in public so you can make a profit!!!

I wouldn't eat at this or any other family restaurant because the food is precooked in most of them and there's nothing on the menu that I can't do better in my own home. But the point is that even with this silly mask, you will not be protected from Covid-19.

Lockdown. Stay home and stay alive!

Hey @tooheysnew. Seriously. EVERYONE is affected by a lockdown. But it is necessary whatever the cost! Would you rather be dead? Yes. You may loose your job and it will get tough. But if you live in Japan for the long term, there is social security and other support. You will need to tighten your belt and live frugally during the lockdown. And if you're one of those people passing through on the "Asian Tour", teaching English or whatever, this may be the time to leave and go home. What is not appreciated is the thoughtless, "all about me, all about the money" position that ABE (and apparently you) espouse. Grow up and be a team player!

Well, there's at least one Governor with the balls to reinstate the SOE. The country needs to go into requested (mandatory) lockdown immediately to get over this catastrophe - or see a massive explosion is Covid-19 cases.

And to all the nay-sayers who want to compare Japan to other countries: we don't live in other countries. We live in JAPAN! Furthermore, it is going to get tough and we should all be doing our best to future-proof our circumstances.

This situation is akin to a massive series of earthquakes across Japan at the same time or a terrorist attack on all major cities.

This isn't about any one individual and the national government should be doing more to protect life over business and economics! Abe gives everyone a megre handout and disappears. The Osaka Governor takes the bull by the horns and puts the fed govt to shame. Now the Aichi Governor steps up. And Abe is where? Doing what's expected at the WWII memorial. Missing in action ABE!

Posted in: Int'l school teachers in Japan exempted from entry ban See in context

In most countries Permanent Resident means exactly that! It is someone who is granted permission to live as though a citizen of that country with minor restrictions, such as not being able to vote, run for office, work in the military or intelligence etc. I understand some countries (Australia) no longer regards the permanent in PR as PERMANENT, but Japan's policy on this is inhumane. PR and long term visa holders etc. should be treated the same as Japanese citizens.

The policy is discriminatory has torn families apart and Japan must be shamed into changing this immediately.

As for the rest. With appropriate screening and mandatory lockdown, it is workable. An international teacher is NOT the highest priority in this scenario.

Posted in: New 'comfort woman' statue in South Korea stokes anger in Japan See in context

@GrungeHamster

I don't disagree with you. However, the constant, overly focused attention on past wartime aggression is not the pathway to peace. ANZAC DAY in Australia is about remembering fallen soldiers on ALL sides of a conflict. We move on because it leads to healing and peace. But we always end the remembrance services with the words "Lest We Forget".

In modern times, for every family who lost someone in Iraq or Afghanistan, there is a family in both of those places that also lost someone. Their loss is the same as ours, irrespective of the politics of the day.

And for Korea, the forced prostitution of women by the Japanese is still sensitive (Let's stop using the phrase "Comfort Women" and call it what it was). However it really is time to stop pushing Japan for more apologies and money. That's been taken care of (more than once) and it really is way past time to move on - with the caveat (Lest We Forget).

Thanks. Perhaps "move on" is just my visceral reaction to the whingers who keep this incendiary topic alive. I think moving on equates to the healing process. But that doesn't mean forget it ever happened. I should have been more clear.

Posted in: New 'comfort woman' statue in South Korea stokes anger in Japan See in context

@ah_so

And an apology for a great crime is not just a one off formulation of words, but needs to be accompanied by a genuine sense of remorse - Japan has never given anyone the sense that there is a collective sense of remorse in the way that there was in Germany, for example.

You don't have children, do you? This is how it goes: after someone does the wrong thing, they get found out, they are shown the error of their ways, there is guilt/remorse, then there is apology/reparations, then forgiveness, then it's forgotten.

Remembering past errors are always a good reminder not to return there but it's best to move on as per my earlier comment.

And there will never be a collective anything from Japan because it's wartime aggression is NOT taught. Any reference to it has been removed from text books which, in the Japanese mind, means it didn't happen. That's not right, I know. But that will never change. Best to move on.

And no good to compare with Germany because they are a mature people, able to learn from past mistakes and grow from the process. The Japanese are a socially backward, immature people, who believe if you hide the facts, then it didn't happen. Maybe this will change over time as Japan becomes a more international multicultural society...

They will have to move out of America.

Are you serious?! The USA is still a democracy and its President can't act unilaterally like the dictators of some countries. And the sooner this disgraceful human and his cohort - the Trump regime - is removed from the Whitehouse, the better off the world will be.

As to the main point of the story: debate is fine but it should not be conducted via social media. There should be arguments for and against, consideration of research, pier reviewed data published, before any public announcements. Social media speculation by lay-people will always be there. But people in authority should be working behind closed doors until there is something factual to say.

Oh and France has also just announced a plan to make it compulsory to wear masks in enclosed public spaces.

Similar measures are being taken in other parts of Europe.

The British government plans to make it mandatory for people to wear face coverings in shops and supermarkets in England from July 24.

When is Japan going to force people to do the same?!

Nishi who claimed his WIFE had beaten him during an argument. After that, police consulted with the couple on the issue of domestic violence.

The wife was accused of beating the husband. Not the other way around. Yes, there are way too many cases of women suffering domestic abuse. But there are cases in which the man may also be the victim.

A sad outcome all the same.

We have a police force worse than useless in this country, who insidiously put the blame for domestic violence and assault on the woman. Personal experience alert:
