Posted in: Lack of legroom, uncomfortable seats flyers' biggest complaints See in context

I'm 6'5", 220. I shouldn't have to be penalized for that. I'll leave the percentage of overweight people -- be they unable to fit in one seat because of inherited DNA or whether they don't give a damn about what they eat, how much they eat, and how often they eat -- to resolve their problems.

When I take my seat in a plane, two things happen: I immediately get gangrene of the knee caps; further, when the person in front of me (always) suddenly jams his/her seat back, it makes my head hit the bottom of the overhead compartment. (The knees are already numb.) Flying sucks pond scum for tall folks. Prices suck for everybody regardless sof size.

An Old Fart maybe, but a liberal since the day I was born (with an outrageous sense of humor, btw), I was nonetheless utterly repulsed at the Oscar emcee's (I've forgotten his name already, thank goodness) incredibly crude one-liner about Lincoln. (In this JT article, I find no mention of it.) He had been talking about Daniel Day-Lewis's ability to "be" Lincoln. Then he said, "Gee, I thought John Wilkes Booth was the only guy that got into Lincoln's head!"

The emcee should be hung in Effigy -- a small suburb of Los Angeles.

The breeder brings new meaning to the term "bitch." I've had two wiener dogs in my life. Daughter now has hers. So much to love!

They oughta put milkbone underwear on that breeder and walk her through an open-cage dog pound.

This pun won't work in Nihongo, but if the Mrs. and her hubby can write and read some English, she should place this message atop the water tank:

Love. Valentine's Day. Hearts everywhere.

Draw a question mark.

Now, edgewise, hold it up to a mirror.

Lo and behold, the reverse mirror-image makes for a heart! Symbolic?

Two acquaintances, facing one another, both with deep-seated questions, hopes. Maybe ....

Guys get massaged and then have the 16- to 24-year-old masseuses sleep next to them for a while? Yeah, right. If that isn't waving the red flag in front of the bull, I don't know what is. I guess it's true these days that the definition of a virgin is "an ugly second-grader."

At my local central Texas AT&T store (selling contracts with new iPhones, iPads, fixing phones, explaining patiently, etc.) the sales and service people always escort us customers to the door, open it and say, "See ya! "Hello? God? Could you please tell me why I have toes and, especially toe nails? What good are they to us human beings in this day and age (except that the ladies like to paint their toe nails)? Fingers and finger nails are the 'in' things now for dealing with tiny objects, of which we have plenty, with plenty more and plenty smaller things coming."

God: "Mmm. So you're suggesting I eliminate the lower digits? Maybe put just a hinge there? Makes sense. Yeah, give me a second, but remember: a "second" to me is a few million years to you. Don't ever forget that. Most of you can't conceive that I'm not exactly some guy with a white beard, wearing a white robe and waving a magic wand. I'm bigger, made up of time and space AND I'm one hell of an intelligent designer. The more answers you uncover by looking through microscopes and telescopes, the more questions you'll have following each answer. To say you Creation-only-ists have pea-sized brains (putting Me on your level and/or putting yourselves on My level -- what colossal egos!) is the understatement of the millennia. Oh, and you Evolution-only-ists have no faith, no hope, whatsoever. My bad. I gave all of you free will, and, yikes, what a mess you've made ofi t!" ;-)

Yu da man! I mean, just 25 years old and with the weight of the entire nation of Japan on his shoulders, that's a lot of presssure. He's got his first regular-season game out of the way, so the jitters should be increasingly less in his future starts. I'm happy for Yu and the Rangers. The Rangers courted him beautifully for over two years. They care.

If Yu wins in the Bigs most of the time, will he be accepted in Nihon as "one of us," a "pure" Japanese? And, contrarily, if he loses most of the time, will he be labeled "Oh, that Iranian? ;-) Te-hee ... wink, wink.

Let's go easy on the guy. This is a helluva transition for anybody: new baseball philosophies, new language, new customs, traditions, new baseballs. Today he was interviewed (with translator) on TV. They played sequential segments between innings. He handled himself quite well. Too bad most Americans playing pro ball in Nihon seem to have long since flunked diplomacy or never took a course in it. Not exactly role models ... ;-) Yu is handling PR graciously. So much is expected of him -- in all areas. I wish him success and think, in time, he will become successful here. OK, so I'm a huge Ranger fan ....

If a human-sized, long-white-bearded god in a long white robe (Ha!) molded mankind in one day, why "on earth" did he/she/it put hair on our chests (males) and provide toenails (males & females)? What good is that / are they? Oh, I certainly believe in Intelligent Design, but c'mon, people, that big a design (the universe and beyond) requires billions of eons to create, which may be but a few seconds from The Intelligent Designer's perspective. I am perfectly comfortable with evolution/creation side-by-side. To me, both are so obvious and complement each other. Simplistic sugar-feed? Perhaps, but I'm at peace! ;-)

Those whose work it is to look through microscopes and telescopes surely must conclude that someone/something is behind the curtain directing it all. For every answer the scientists discover, two more questions pop up. Understatement of the millennium: Evolution takes time; time we miniscule, pin-headed humans can't even begin to perceive.

This is wonderful. Two of the best things in the world -- Japan and Cal Ripken -- getting together. I am an unabashed fan of both of them. Cal was my hero and my son's hero. Cal is a role model for all kids. He is very smart, considerate, and just an all-around great guy. My son and I attended his installment in MLB's Hall of Fame. Something every father and son (and daughter) should visit.

I foolishly joined Facebook two years ago. Listed my college. Biggest mistake of my life. Thousands and thousands of people who have graduated from the same college (over the past 40 years!) show up. Feelers from, say, Australia ("Are you the [JB] who ....?" "What? OMG!," I think. I don't know (or care about) any of them. I quickly (intentionally) forgot my password. Facebook promised me a new one "within a week or so." Two years later, nothing. So now I can't unsubscribe. I don't know or care what's piling up on my (totally wasted) Facebook site. I just want me and my profile outa there! I'm a laser--beam kinda guy, not a buck-shot (scatter-shot) multi-tasker. Quality over quantity. Help me, Rhonda .... I'm not biologically Japanese, but maybe they've got something there ...

Posted in: How long to learn Japanese? See in context

It's going to take me a long time to learn Nihongo, maybe more years than I have left. Example: I've read repeatedly where the insulting term "baka yaroo/yaru" means "stupid idiot." Then I read a book, "Learning How To Bow -- Inside the Heart of Japan," written by American author Bruce Feiler, a Yale graduate who spent two years in rural Japan teaching English. His book was published in 1991.

He tells of witnessing friends -- a mom and dad -- who agreed to take their two young sons to see the New Year's Day sunrise. The kids' joint reply: "Baka Yaru!" writes Feiler, "This is totally awesome!" Is this what kids say to kind parents? Or does "baka yaru" mean many things depending upon situation/context? You can understand why I'm confused. ;-)
