She makes an allegation and you all take it as truth. All violence is wrong.

Unfortunately, many people don't "believe" such things happen... I can vouch that they do... and of course, all violence is wrong.

The heat is bad enough but the humidity makes it much worse...

"Japan is vulnerable to earthquakes, but building standards are the strictest in the world,"

I guess that's why they're having to completely recontruct a bunch of fairly new apartments - that were all "tilting" - not far from our place here in Yokohama...

Didn't know that wheelchairs and prams were allowed on escalators.

They're NOT - and there are big signs on them saying so.

Is it a "crime" to be drunk ?

One of the "tanks" looks very much like a special "bottle" for male patients at the hospital...

I also feel sorry for the poor fish - no friends, no space and stark lighting all the time...

Starting out young... Hope it doesn't go too far...

At least he is working part-time - that's better than being a "stay-at-home good-for-nothing" scrounging off his parents !

As Mike L says : just ask the girl out !

How gruesome...

True, there are not many houses with basements in Japan, wewould have loved to have had one - minus any skeletons !

A 14-year-old boy in Osaka Prefecture

Just curious to know why Kanagawa/Yokohama are involved and not Osaka ?

@sensei258 : The very first thing I thought of when I saw that picture, was that he was choking her.

My own thoughts exactly... It's certainly not the first time we read such stories - if only Abe kept his word from time to time... "we will build more hospices for the elderly..." also : "We will build more "daycare" centres for the children of working parents..." The question is : WHEN ???

Posted in: Taxi or rickshaw? See in context

At least a rickshaw "driver" can decide for himself if he has enough energy and stamina to do the job - I pity the poor horses when they are used to carry tourists around - they don't have any choice and I recently saw a picture (I don't remember where - maybe JT ?) of a horse lying exhausted on the road.

As Brian Wheway says :

these modes of transport is very environmentally friendly...

I would die of claustrophobia in a crowd like that ! (Luckily, it seems they don't expect too many foreigners to join them).

Posted in: Cabinet OKs bill to allow 1st abdication of emperor in 200 years See in context

allowing princesses to stay in the imperial family after marriage could eventually pave the way for women to inherit the throne.

Since the first person to rule over Japan was Princess Himiko, I don't quite understand why they have decided women can no longer rule ? Especially since Dear Leader has been saying so much about women getting "more important roles" in society...

As for the Emperor's abdication - I would have thought he should be the first to decide whether or not he can allow himself to "retire".

Posted in: Golden Week holidays get under way in Japan See in context

That's the problem with this country... Everyone SO excited about a "9 day holiday" - all during the same period - just doesn't make sense... At least in Europe one (usually) gets a whole month holiday when one chooses to go whenever/wherever they please without having to worry about "overcrowded transportation/hotels" etc. but... this is Japan - country securely anchored in its ancient habits...
