Posted in: Japan's plastic waste problem spurring grocery shopping novelty See in context

South Korea is the leading recycling nation on the planet.

As someone who has lived in South Korea, where they flush garbage down the toilet and stack coffee cups on top of overflowing trash cans at bus stops, I burst out laughing at your comment.

Korean flouting of the 'rules' is one key to their present success vs Japan.

From my experience working in South Korea, disrespect for the rules is more like a selfish coping mechanism.

Posted in: University applicants today are prone to prefer easier-to-attend schools. Operators apparently hope to attract more applicants by responding to the need. See in context

I agree to both opinions! As a foreign student who graduated in a Japanese university, it was shocking to see how my classmates were uninspired to study. Many were cheating during exams.

As someone who studied in four different countries and interacted with students from over twenty different countries, I can say there are students like that pretty much everywhere.

Posted in: So long, Internet Explorer. The browser is finally retiring See in context

My school uses IE for a Japanese program called Academic Ace (Ache) which has been a burning pile of dog feces since its inception.

Reminds me of my alma mater in South Korea. I was talking to one of my former professors a while ago who said students still had to use IE to check their grades.

Not sure how N Korea is ahead of Japan here, but there you go. Female women in high power international facing positions, wow.

Someone hasn't seen the governor of Tokyo.

Seriously though, this makes headline news?

Blame the media, not the police. The media chose to publish this.

Posted in: Art event featuring 'comfort woman' statue opens in Tokyo See in context

I just cannot understand why Japan just doesn't apologize for their role in this terrible attack on Korean women? Why? Oh Why?

They have apologized and paid recompensation. Multiple times.

Posted in: Japan cautiously welcomes South Korean president-elect See in context

The Korean protests against Japan seem much milder compared to what the Japanese do.

I don't see any Japanese setting themselves on fire, shaving themselves, or breaking into government buildings. I've lived in South Korea, and they're just as guilty of being blind to their own actions. Even worse, they excuse them because of their victim status.

It was trending number 1 on Japanese Twitter this morning.

Posted in: Long wallet or bifold? What your wallet says about you in Japan See in context

The "long wallet" looks like a lady's purse and doesn't belong in the hands of a man.

And neither do the handbags half the men here choose to carry.

So judgmental.

Posted in: S Korea, Taiwan expected to top Japan in GDP per capita in 2027, 2028 See in context

As per my knowledge its because of the way japanese treat foreigners... they only want foreigners to buy their product and when their economy is down....

South Korea has its own issues with foreigners. Ask one of the Yemeni refugees who were in Jeju when 700,000 people signed a petition to deport them. Or one of the English teachers who were deported for no good reason back when the government raided Hagwons en masse.

An awful way to start 2022 (or end 2021, in U.S. time). Reminds me of David Bowie and Kobe Bryant. Celebrity deaths hurt more after the holidays.

@casadeoctane

They wear masks indoors and outdoors and everywhere like people do here right?

I talked to a professor from my alma mater in Seoul who mentioned how a lot of students don't wear masks outside of class. Also, Koreans talk more than Japanese, which doesn't help in this situation.

Posted in: LDP loses one of two by-elections in blow to Kishida See in context

Korean politics is more dynamic and the politically active youth are willing to fight to bring meaningful change.

I think you’re giving them too much credit. I was studying in Seoul during the election to replace Park Geun-Hye, and I don’t know anyone from my school who went to vote even though they had an excuse to skip class.

Kidnapped, forced . . .

For future reference, a Korean professor confirmed some Koreans volunteered to be comfort women or helped recruit other women.

The book uses the women’s testimonies and historical documents, noting some were prostitutes rather than slaves, some soldiers helped those who were slaves escape and some Koreans worked as “dealers” who made the system possible.

Posted in: Japan rejects South Korean protest over Olympics map See in context

Korea has enough reason to hate Japan after suffering under a brutal occupation for many years. I remember when a friend of mine in Korea, now in his 80s, showed me a big scar on his head. As a child, he was hit over the head by a Japanese kempetai soldier for speaking Korean--his own language! Just one incident.

Something that happened almost eighty years ago is not a reason to hate someone's grandchildren or an entire country.

I sympathize with the comfort women, but I no longer support the SK government exploiting them for extorting money and hatemongering. The Japanese government apologized and paid compensations, and in return SK cancelled the comfort women foundation Japan formed and embezzled money. Shows how much they care about their own.
