"Hiramatsu says that psychologically, men have a stronger urge compared to women to control and dominate others."

I really can't stand the neanderthal psychology crap that is still taken seriously in Japan. Ever heard of a helicopter mom? Women can have strong urges to control and dominate others as well. This kind of thinking is used to justify the actions of men who control and abuse their partners.

They should just admit that, yes, men go to these places because they like to talk to pretty girls and feel good about themselves.

That's why the Govt. is shelling out some YEN now to it's own residents

So why not shell out to foreign helpers? They did knowingly accept foreign help too.

...and they're suing in San Diego? TEPCO doesn't stand a chance. Pay up suckers, the fiscal cliff bailout needs you ;)

But the Japanese government and TEPCO did lie about radiation, and they should be sued. Doesn't really matter who does it. And I get that a lot of Japanese people think it's an honor to sacrifice themselves for their country, but don't expect that kind of subservient attitude from Americans.

Knowing how accurate the local city halls are here with their record keeping, he's probably actually only 92 or something.

Posted in: Abe pledges no compromise over disputed islands See in context

Buying the islands from an "owner" was completely bs. The islands had been in dispute for many years and certainly did not belong to any private owner. There are talks between China and Japan that go back to the Deng Xiaoping era.

Abe's position of "no compromise" is typical hardheaded Japanese crap about preserving national honor at the expense of anyone else. Too bad it's the kind of kool aid that Japanese people like to hear. And too bad Abe is dumb enough to even wish that his position will not affect the economic relations between China and Japan. He really needs to get his head out of his ass.

Posted in: Abe to become Japan's 7th PM in 6 years after landslide LDP win See in context

It is time for Japan to reinvent itself from #2 world economy to #10 or #20.

Best thing I've seen in a long time. Yes, stop trying to be a major super power if you don't have the land and resources for it. It's just not going to happen. Better to follow the lead of a handful of European countries that care more about governing themselves than about impressing others.

Why does Abe think it's ok to change his views on historical events repeatedly, as if revising history is even acceptable???

Posted in: Men who use trains on dates: Please stay single See in context

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here: if this article was actually written by a woman who is as "it" as she claims, then she will have no problems finding someone to spend obscene amounts of money on her and take her on dates in a fancy car. If she's into older men, then she is probably beating them off with a stick as we speak. Don't hate the player, hate the game. The game being how Japanese men objectify (beautiful) women and how women cope with it by objectifying (rich) men.

Is it too much to ask of young Japanese people to be ok with their faces, or the way they look? I had a girl in one of my classes who wore a mask all the time too. While yes, she wasn't the most conventionally attractive person, it just makes me sad that someone who is old enough to be in college would have such low self-esteem.

Posted in: My Japan is not your Japan See in context

Oh Japan is definitely very good at packaging itself and marketing itself as a "special and unique place" to the rest of the world. I've seen it done in the States, and I've seen it again at travel fairs in other Asian countries. The thing is, other countries just don't try so freaking hard to market themselves. The official stance of Japanese policy is that, of course, Japan is perfect and has never done anything wrong in its entire history. eye roll

Posted in: Japan's secret economic weapon: women See in context

Well if women asserted themselves more and demanded equal pay for equal work, then corporations can't take advantage of them. This is a big part of the gender wage gap in western countries- women don't negotiate their salaries and don't assert themselves enough.

@blue-milk

This must be a dirty trick to get us non-suspecting males hooked before they milk us out of our money, right?

Talk to more foreign men in long-term relationships or marriages with Japanese women and see what they say.

My original post commented on both Japanese men and Japanese women, there was no intention to single out and bash Japanese women. I think their whole system is f-ed up and should be changed, that's all.

Oh, and foreign women do get attention in Japan. I got plenty, most of it either creepy or inappropriate. The stuff we have to put up with here due to sexism...most of you will never understand.

Posted in: Without women joining the workforce, the government's tax revenue won't pick up because the population will continue to shrink. See in context

It's not enough to just say "women should join the workforce". The whole society needs an overhaul- eliminate gender discrimination in the work place, stop expecting women to do all the housework, and let men take paid leave for child care as well. And I think Japanese women aren't having kids because they're not happy with the status quo. Having more of the same won't solve the problem.

If Japanese politicians don't behave callously toward China and South Korea, then maybe Japan won't be in peril and won't need the US to defend them.

Personally I think the Senkaku Islands are a legacy of Japanese imperialism and do not rightfully belong to Japan. Maybe they don't rightfully belong to China either, but if one side is going to stake its claim and be so stubborn about it then the other side is bound to get annoyed.

Posted in: 'Rent-a-Girlfriend' service offers simulated romance See in context

Yeah, I'm from the States actually. And I do think most relationships Americans have are based on real connections rather than money. My original point was that, in Japan, most married women stay home and get their husband's salary. That doesn't mean they don't care about each other, of course, but you can see why I said Japanese women think men are cash dispensers. Also I don't think this type of relationship is the same thing as gold diggers in the States, so the whole gold digger discussion was a side track. And sorry you seem to have such bad impressions of American women (or women in general). But if you're someone who would rather get an escort than have a relationship, then I have nothing further to say to you anyway.
