Posted in: Gov't to request American schools in Okinawa accept Japanese pupils See in context

Being a graduate of a DOD school myself, I think it's an interesting idea. It's possible, but going to take a lot of commitment from all sides. Parent, teacher AND student. The Japanese parents are going to have to be able to understand the child's homework and realize that the parent is responsible for the child's homework to be complete. The parent must also realize the in many cases, there is no turning back to the Japanese education system. In the upper grades, the child will have no time for "juku" (cram school) in preparation for the Japanese entrance exams. For the teachers, they have to no time to "babysit" had child with a language problem. The number should also be limited to prevent the Japanese speaking kids from forming groups and avoiding having to speak English. This is done in some international schools.

@Disillusioned

do they have proof it is the Chinese

That's why they're launching the study? And, there was a massive coral poaching problem with the Chinese some years ago so, I wouldn't be surprised...

Interesting. All the the signs say "We will not give up". Says nothing about Osprey or crashes or anything. Must be a generic sign they use whenever they want to demonstrate about something.

Posted in: S Korea's Moon calls for official apology over 'comfort women' See in context

We (most people living in Japan) know that this is all just a waste of time. Whatever Japan does, it may be settled for a while (as it has in the past) until someone decides that the apology wasn't deep enough or the legal payment wasn't big enough and everything starts all over again.

First of all, I don't ever recall seeing a foreign tourist driving a rent-a-car. Secondly, if they did, there probably wouldn't be enough cars to meet the demand anyway. I really doubt that the rent-a-car companies are going to increase their fleet for a one month event.

I agree. Some people say that Japan should only defend itself. But, in all reality, if Japan were to be attacked it's not going to work out like "Rurouni Kenshin".

It is becoming known in Japan that there are quite a few people, not only teenagers that wear the mask year round as some sort of barrier to separate themselves from the rest of their surroundings. It helps them feel "secure"...

Posted in: Japan, U.S. to sign pact to limit base workers' immunity from prosecution See in context

I wonder how base privileges would work. Once upon a time I used to work for the MCX in Iwakuni. I had to leave the country and return in order to get a SOFA status. I then had full base privileges. I think I even had medical...not quite sure. Pay was cheap but the base privileges made up for that. At the time, gasoline was about 1/3 of out in town and being able to shop at the PX and commissary saved a lot of money.
