Not sure Japan can recover a healthy economy without energy...

This is a very good start. Experience shows that mature countries which have low level of child care offer also have low birth rate. See Germany compared to France. True that this costs to the collectivity but you cannot expect long term economic growth when your population is getting older and older. Or you will need more immigration...

Posted in: Hollande elected French president See in context

I do not agree that it is a humiliating defeat. Despite all prognostic, despite the economical crisis, despite the reject of Sarkozy's personality, the end gap is very narrow. If you add up people who would normally have voted for the right wing candidate but actually rejected Sarkozy, this could have led to a defeat of Hollande. Next elections to parliament will be crucial. Now that Sarkozy has gone, who knows what will happen. I cannot accept comparison with Greek situation. At least in France people do day their taxes and black economy is far marginal. In the past, it took 14 years to his supporters to understand that Mitterrand was a lier and fooled them. I hope it will be quicker here. Never forget that 48.3% of French people voted against Hollande...

@forzaducati French coasts are not subject to tsunamis like Japan. Technology of French reactors is more secured than old GE technology used in Japan. French power plants are today operated by public company EDF and not by private companies. French Nuclear authority ASN is putting big pressure on EDF not to reduce safety levels in nuclear power plants. Instead of spending energy to push towards the prohibition a technology that actually presents potential risks, put the same energy to push authorities, industrials, etc... to keep sufficiently high safety levels in the control of these technologies. Precaution principle leads us back to the cave.

They speak of energy used per user... You have to multiply it by x millions. Or they have found a way to illuminate these million people with the same single 60W light bulb. How smart they are ! How stupid we are...

When I see comments hoping their glory whoud allow them to make more money, I am a little bit worried. For sure when they become professionals they should have a decent living. But from the moment they become stars and a club is ready to put millions to buy a player, the game is dead. Let's keep it a sport, not a business. Besides that great achievement. After France was out, Japan was my favorite team. Well done ladies !

Posted in: IAEA says nuclear safety must be improved; criticizes Japan for being lax See in context

The IAEA is a joke. They make recommendations, which countries and utility companies ignore because it would mean spending huge amounts of money.

No, IAEA is definitely not a joke. Some politicians are just irresponsible. Setting international standards is the best way to allow for higher safety. Agree with our French minister. As an international authority to punish violating countries is not to be expected, there should be the democratic judgement of the People in those countries. We could imagine some kind of referendum initiated by the People in case the security or safety of the people has been endangered.

What a shame ! It is the same as saying : Japanese guys, your lives are less important than ours. You are not worth a concert. Just stay in your air conditioned, sterilized studio and keep on thinking you are a goodness (but Gods cannot die ? So are you a simple human being ? What a disappointment for me !)

“Fukushima was a dramatic experience, seeing there that a high-technology nation can’t cope with such a catastrophe,” Matthias Kleiner, the commission’s co-chairman, said Monday.

I wonder whether the problem is not that technology safety is left to politicians.

Power and influence have nothing to do with that kind of behavior. Any man doing the same risks his whole life : family, friends, professional relation will abandon you the day after.

Reading all these comments I let myself fall into realpolitik... Yes ghadafi has the power through the oil production of Lybia. Yes he his an awful bloody tyran who is always a latent threat to free world financing international terrorism His folk has finally raised against him an opened a door to more freedom (still to be confirmed). We must take that opportunity to shoot the tyran down, and give Lybian people the possibility to rebuilt something better. "fight for human rights", "neocolonialism", "fight for democracy". Nice words ! But it is time for action, not for speeches because time window is narrow.

US economy is so much dependent from China that I do not see them leaving a strategical platform there. But I think Japan should try to get it's independence, not only by counterbalancing US influence with Europe, but also by building it's own network of allies in the Asian region.

Posted in: Japan's jobless rate stays at 4.9% in January See in context

According to website tradingeconomics.com : The labour force is defined as the number of people employed plus the number unemployed but seeking work. The nonlabour force includes those who are not looking for work, those who are institutionalised and those serving in the military.

There is a standard way of counting unemployment according to International Labour Organization. Don't know if Japan uses same définition.

I wonder if they also have a law for making anti-Islamic remarks.

Of course there is. Everybody Is protected in French law ! Discrimination on ethnic, gender, religion basis is punished by law. Freedom of expression is more and more limited. And because more and more European companies have their shares marketed at Wall Street, American 'good thinking' is more and more spreading in old Europe. It is often very excessive and hypocrite. We do not need laws to tell people how they should think. We have education for that. Accepting a law there is the recognition that education system is a failure. In Galliano's case, be careful not to be blamed for discrimination against the gays... Instead of a dangerous community approach I prefer a more simplistic rule : respect others and do not insult anybody...
